Edifício Praça da Bandeira, better known by its former name, Joelma Building, is a 25-story building in downtown São Paulo, Brazil, completed in 1971, located at Avenida 9 de Julho, 225. On 1 February 1974, an air conditioning unit on the twelfth floor overheated, starting a fire. There were 756 people in the building at the time. Because flammable materials had been used to furnish the interior, the entire building was engulfed in flames within 20 minutes. The fire was extinguished at 1:30pm, with 179 deaths and 300 people injured. This happened less than two years after another deadly fire in downtown São Paulo, that of the Andraus Building. As of 2021, the Joelma fire remains the second-worst skyscraper fire ever in terms of the death toll, after the collapse of the twin World Trade Center towers in New York City on September 11, 2001.

The Mário de Andrade Library (in Portuguese: Biblioteca Mário de Andrade; BMA) is the largest public library in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Founded in 1925, with a donation of holdings by the library of the city's Câmara Municipal, it became one of the most important cultural institutions in Brazil, as well as one of the leading research libraries in the country. It is named in honor of Mário de Andrade, one of the founders of Brazilian modernism. It is housed in an Art Deco building in the historical downtown, considered one of the icons of this style in the city. Mário de Andrade Library was the first Brazilian public institution interested in acquiring modern works of art of local and foreign artists (which are placed today in the Pinacoteca Municipal). It has been a member of United Nations depository libraries system since 1958, though it started receiving UN material nine years earlier, in 1949. During Sérgio Milliet's administration, the library would have a very large participation in São Paulo intellectual sets. Later, the library would be frequented by academics as Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Marilena Chaui. Sheltering the second largest bibliographic and documental heritage of Brazil — only after the National Library in Rio de Janeiro — the Mário de Andrade Library is the depository of all artistic and cultural registers of the city of São Paulo. Its collection includes about 3.2 million items, covering all areas of the knowledge — amongst which a distinct assemblage of over 60,000 rare books, manuscripts, incunabula, maps, prints, brasiliana and others, produced between 15th and 19th centuries.The Mário Andrade Municipal Library has branches throughout the city, providing circulating materials to general public.

The Church of the Wounds of the Seraphic Father Saint Francis of the Venerable Third Order of Saint Francis of Penance of São Paulo (Portuguese: Igreja das Chagas do Seráfico Pai São Francisco da Venerável Ordem Terceira de São Francisco da Penitência de São Paulo), usually known as the Church of the Wounds of the Seraphic Father Saint Francis (Igreja das Chagas do Seráfico Pai São Francisco), is a colonial temple located in Largo de São Francisco, in the historic center of São Paulo, Brazil. Along with the Church of Saint Francis, it composes a very important element in the layout of the old São Paulo de Piratininga.The building, inaugurated by the Third Order of Saint Francis in 1787, is the only architectural example remaining from the 18th century in the urban core of São Paulo. For this reason, it is considered an important historical-architectural document for reading and analyzing the city during the colonial period.Like the exterior of the Church of the Third Order of Carmel, the facade of the temple was built by the Afro-Brazilian architect Joaquim Pinto de Oliveira, known as Tebas, who was born a slave in Santos.

The Church and Convent of Saint Francis was a religious institution installed in the town of São Paulo during colonial Brazil. In the 19th century, the convent was converted into a Law School. The Church of the Wounds of the Seraphic Father Saint Francis, built by the Secular Franciscan Order, is next to it.The ensemble formed by the Law School and the two churches has great historical value and is situated in Largo de São Francisco, in the Historic Center of São Paulo.

The Law School of the University of São Paulo (in Portuguese: Faculdade de Direito da Universidade São Paulo, also known as Faculdade de Direito do Largo de São Francisco) is an institution of higher education and research in the field of law located in São Paulo, Brazil. It joined the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1934, when the latter was established.

Largo de São Francisco is home to some important landmarks in the history of São Paulo and is considered one of the city's main Baroque architecture complexes. It is also known as the "ground zero" of Brigadeiro Luís Antônio, one of the city's most important avenues.It houses the Law School of the University of São Paulo (FDUSP) and the Álvares Penteado School of Commerce Foundation (FECAP), as well as the Church of Saint Francis and the Church of the Third Order of Penance. The side street is called Cristóvão Colombo.

Beth-El Synagogue (Portuguese: Sinagoga Beth-El) is a synagogue in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Built in 1929, the synagogue has the distinction of being the first synagogue building in São Paulo. Consecrated in December 1929, construction of the temple was financed by a number of Jewish families in São Paulo and organized by Salomão Klabin. The synagogue's architecture is notable as the building has seven sides. Today, the synagogue hosts religious services while the building houses the Jewish Museum of São Paulo, which is dedicated to promoting local Jewish culture and history. While the building was consecrated in 1929, religious services were first held in the building in 1932.Today, Beth-El Synagogue affiliates with an inclusive and pluralist form of Judaism and welcome people from different backgrounds. The foundation of the synagogue in 1926 represents the communities historical roots in the community.

The Jewish Museum of São Paulo (Portuguese: Museu Judaico de São Paulo) is a Jewish museum in São Paulo, Brazil. It holds exhibits on Jewish life in Brazil and a collection of over 2,000 items brought over by immigrants to Brazil. The museum's building originated in 1928 as a Byzantine-style synagogue and was lent out to the museum in 2004. Extensive renovations were completed over the course of 17 years, and the museum opened in 2021.

Matarazzo Building (Portuguese: Edifício Matarazzo), also known as Palácio do Anhangabaú (Anhangabaú Palace) is the city hall of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It belonged to Banespa until 2004, when it was sold to the city government. It was designed by Italian architect Marcello Piacentini under the will of Ermelino Matarazzo, in order to host the headquarters of his industries. The building's architectural style looks like Art Deco. According to the deal made with Banespa, the building would be given to the city government as part of the debt of 885 million reais (some 466 million dollars) that the extinct CMTC had with the bank. The city would then owe 156 million reais, to be paid in four years.

The Alexandre Mackenzie Building (Portuguese: Edifício Alexandre Mackenzie), also known as the Light Building (Prédio da Light), is a construction located in the central area of the city of São Paulo, between the intersection of Coronel Xavier de Toledo Street and the Viaduto do Chá, designed by the Americans Preston and Curtis and executed by Severo, Villares & Cia. Ltda. It was the headquarters of the São Paulo Tramway, Light and Power Company and later of the former state-owned Eletropaulo. It was completed in 1929 and extended in 1941. Since 1999, after careful restoration, it houses Shopping Light.
