The Sack of Turku occurred from 2–7 August of 1509 during the Dano-Swedish War of 1501–1512. A Danish force under the command of Otto Ruud snuck past Åbo's (Turku's) defenses at night, after which the Danes landed on the shore and spread out into the city. They would kill anyone they encountered, also plundering the cathedral, taking many valuables after which they departed on 7 August. In his report to Sten Sture the Younger on 16 August, Bishop Johannes Olvainpoika writes about how the Danes caused "immense and irreparable damage" during their attack on the cathedral.

The VIII District, also known as Port Arthur (or Portsa in colloquial Finnish), is one of the central districts of Turku, Finland. It is located on the west side of the river Aura, between Puistokatu and the IX District (Länsiranta). The district consists mostly of wooden houses, separated by narrow streets paved with cobblestones. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful residential districts in the whole of Finland, and has received an award to that effect in 2001. Port Arthur is one of the most expensive districts in Turku to live in. The district was originally built in the 1900s as a residential area for workers. It was inadvertently named after the city of Port Arthur (now Lüshunkou, China) that Imperial Russia (which ruled Finland at the time) lost during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. Local children asked the workmen what they were doing; their reply of "rebuilding Port Arthur" caught on among the citizenry.Attempts by the city council to build tenements in the area in the 1970s failed due to strong opposition from locals. The area is nowadays protected. In addition to the residential area of Port Arthur, the district contains the Michael's Church, and the Kakola hill. The district has a population of 4,760 (as of 2004) and an annual population growth rate of -1.55%. 9.26% of the district's population are under 15 years old, while 19.10% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 91.07% Finnish, 7.06% Swedish, and 1.87% other.

St. Bridget and Blessed Hemming Church (Finnish: Pyhän Birgitan ja Autuaan Hemmingin kirkko, Swedish: Sankta Birgittas och salige Hemmings kyrka) is a parish of the Roman Catholic Church in Turku, Finland. The church building, completed in 1966, is located in the center of Turku in Ursininkatu. It was consecrated in honor of St. Bridget of Sweden and bishop Hemming of Turku. It is part of a group of Catholic parish buildings that were completed after 1966, including an administrative office and a residence. The Catholic history of Turku goes back over 80 years, with 1,194 members as of 2005, most of whom have foreign backgrounds (notably immigrants from Southeast Asia and Poland). The parish priest Father Peter Gebara SCJ (Brotherhood of the Sacred Heart of Jesus or Jeesuksen Pyhän Sydämen Veljeskunta), a native of Poland. The Church of Turku also has links to the Order of St. Brigid (birgittalaisluostari), a Catholic convent.

Turku Central Station (Finnish: Turun päärautatieasema, Swedish: Åbo centralstation) is a railway station in the VII District of Turku, Finland. It has VR services to Helsinki and towards Joensuu (most terminate in Tampere or Pieksämäki). The station serves approximately a million passengers annually.The railway station was opened in 1876, together with the newly built railway between Turku and Tampere, in a celebration attended by the future Tsar Alexander III of Russia. Services were at first only to Tampere and Toijala, and the significance of railways was rather minor. In 1899, a new railway to Helsinki was opened, and subsequently rail traffic to and from Turku became more frequent. The older station was demolished in 1938, and a new, more modern, one was built in its place. The current building, completed in 1940, was designed by Finnish architects Väinö Vähäkallio and Martti Välikangas.In addition to the two main railway lines to Helsinki and Joensuu, the station has handled passenger traffic to Naantali and Uusikaupunki. These local lines have been discontinued due to lack of use, but are still used by goods traffic. In addition, there is talk of re-establishing the line to Naantali in the near future, either as a museum railway line or a form of local public transport. Unlike the Helsinki Central railway station, which stands out as a prominent landmark of downtown Helsinki, the Turku Central railway station blends in among the scenery and is hidden behind other buildings when viewed from the city centre. Because of this, it can be difficult for non-Turkuans to get their bearings around the railway station. On 7 June 2010, the Turku Central railway station was officially renamed Turun päärautatieasema-Åbo centralstation (Turku main railway station, or Turku central railway station) in Finnish and Swedish, replacing the previous official name Turun rautatieasema-Åbo järnvägsstation (Turku railway station). The Finnish transport bureau use "Turku C" as a shorthand, and there were erroneous news reports that this shorthand would also be taken into official use. The Helsinki Central railway station was renamed in a similar manner.

Turku Prison (Finnish: Turun vankila, Swedish: Åbo fängelse) is the main correctional facility in southwestern Finland, located in the Saramäki district of Turku. It was formed in 2003 by the merger of the earlier Turku Central Prison (Turun keskusvankila), also commonly known as 'Kakola', and Turku County Prison (Turun lääninvankila), and moved in 2007 from its old location on the Kakolanmäki hill in central Turku to its new premises. It is a closed prison, with capacity for 255 inmates. Along with Riihimäki, Turku is one of two prisons in Finland with the highest A+ security rating. In 2021, a new high security wing was added, to house prisoners associated with organised crime or otherwise likely to pose particular risks.

The Kakola Funicular (Finnish: Kakolan funikulaari; Swedish: Kakolafunikularen) is an inclined lift in Turku, Finland. The lift has been in operation since 2019. Despite its name, the Kakola funicular is not a true funicular, as it does not have a human operator nor a second carriage as a counterweight. It is the first outdoor inclined lift in Finland.

Martinsilta (St. Martin's Bridge) (Swedish: Martinsbron) is a beam bridge spanning the Aurajoki river in Turku, Finland. It was built in 1940, although a proposed bridge appeared on its present location already in the city plan that Carl Ludvig Engel created after the Great Fire of Turku of 1827. The bridge is 104.5 metres (343 ft) in length. The bridge is a one-way bridge crossing from Linnankatu to Itäinen Rantakatu in a south-southeast direction. The nearby Myllysilta bridge carries one-way traffic in the opposite direction. In 2010, due to the collapse of the Myllysilta bridge, Martinsilta was temporarily turned into a two-way bridge until Myllysilta was rebuilt and opened to traffic.

Martin's Church (Finnish: Martinkirkko, Swedish: Martinskyrkan) in Turku, Finland is the main church of Martin's parish, founded in 1921. The church was consecrated on the 450th anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther, on November 12, 1933. The designers of the church were the architects Totti Sora and Gunnar Wahlroos. The church represents architectural functionalism. Martin's church is a long church with three aisles with very narrow side aisles. The church has a functional and singular practicality of its own. The barrel-vaulting of the roof is one of the most outstanding features of the church. The altar, the pulpit, and the roof are notable features of architect Sora's work. On the top of the pulpit, the architect has placed a crown. The same theme is featured as a decoration to the hymn list table. The architects have clearly thought of the church as a royal court chamber and for this reason the basic construction is reminiscent of a basilica. The artist Aarre Aaltonen has made five decorative sculptures for the pulpit.

The VII District is one of the central districts of Turku, Finland. It is located on the west side of the river Aura, between Aurakatu and Puistokatu. Like the neighbouring VI District, it forms part of the city's central business district. The two districts combined host a large proportion of the city's business life, particularly around the Market Square (Kauppatori, part of the VI District). Turku City Hall is located in the VII District, as well as the Turku Central Railway Station. The district has a population of 8,749 (as of 2004), making it the third largest district in Turku. Its annual population growth rate is 0.46%. 5.06% of the district's population are under 15 years old, while 22.53% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 89.04% Finnish, 8.66% Swedish, and 2.30% other.

The Myllysilta (Mill Bridge) (Swedish: Kvarnbron) is a steel girder bridge crossing the Aurajoki (Aura River) in the middle of the city of Turku in Finland. The bridge was opened on 19 September 2011. Only two of four lanes were first in use, the bridge was totally completed on 29 November 2011, even though some landscaping and stone work were completed in 2012. The bridge connects Turku's IV district to the VII district, and has four westbound lanes, and a sidewalk on northern side. It is a one-way-route from east to west, while the nearby Martinsilta bridge goes west to east.

Harmonia (Finnish) or Harmoni (Swedish, Harmony) is a fountain sculpture by Achim Kühn. It is located in the Aura River in Turku, Finland.

The IV District, also known as Martti (Finnish; Martins in Swedish), is one of the central districts of Turku, Finland. It is located on the east side of the river Aura, between Tervahovinkatu in the west and Betaniankatu and Martinkatu in the east. The district is one of the smallest in Turku, and is centred on the Martinkirkko church, named after the reformer Martin Luther (Martti Luther in Finnish). Martti is also one of the most expensive areas to live in Turku. The district is rather densely populated, and has a population of 4,357 (as of 2004) and an annual population growth rate of -0.46%. 7.16% of the district's population are under 15 years old, while 18.80% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 90.22% Finnish, 8.40% Swedish, and 1.38% other.
