Skyland is a neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is bounded by Good Hope Road to the northeast, Alabama Avenue to the southeast, and Fort Stanton Park to the south and west. It is part of Ward 8. Also see article on the Anacostia neighborhood. The District is in the midst of redeveloping the 18-acre (73,000 m2) Skyland Shopping Center at Alabama Avenue and Naylor Road, SE in Ward 7 into a mixed-used town center. The District is working with the Rappaport Cos. and the William S. Smith Cos. on a master plan for the site. Initial plans for Skyland Town Center call for more than 320,000 square feet (30,000 m2) of retail space—a combination of high-quality, large format national-brand retailers and neighborhood serving shops and restaurants. The project will also include 420 to 470 units of housing, about 80 percent of the units will be condos and 20 percent will be apartments. Several outstanding legal issues associated with the project have complicated the development process, but the District is working closely with the development team and its architects, Torti Gallas + Partners, to accelerate the pre-development work so the project moves on a parallel track with the legal process. The development team expects to have its master plan completed and a Planned Unit Development (PUD) application filed with the Zoning Commission by the spring of 2008. The District and development team are negotiating the business terms of their agreement. The DC Council has already approved a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) package to provide gap financing for the project. Skyland is within the Good Hope neighborhood and borders Hillcrest to the east and Naylor Gardens to the southeast.

Randle Highlands is a neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., east of the Anacostia River.

Twining is a neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., near the eastern bank of the Anacostia River. It is bounded by Minnesota Avenue NE to the northeast, Branch Avenue to the northwest, and Pennsylvania Avenue to the south. The Fort Dupont year-round ice skating rink, and the Smithsonian's Anacostia Neighborhood Museum are nearby. It is named for Major William Johnson Twining, who served as Military Commissioner of the District of Columbia from 1878 until his death in 1882.

Fort Stanton was a Civil War-era fortification constructed in the hills above Anacostia in the District of Columbia, USA, and was intended to prevent Confederate artillery from threatening the Washington Navy Yard. It also guarded the approach to the bridge that connected Anacostia (then known as Uniontown) with Washington. Built in 1861, the fort was expanded throughout the war and was joined by two subsidiary forts: Fort Ricketts and Fort Snyder. Following the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, it was dismantled and the land returned to its original owner. It never saw combat. Abandoned after the war, the site of the fort was planned to be part of a grand "Fort Circle" park system encircling the city of Washington. Though this system of interconnected parks never was fully implemented, the site of the fort is today a park maintained by the National Park Service, and a historical marker stands near the fort's original location.

Engine Company No. 19 is a historic Engine house in Southeast Washington, D.C.'s Randle Highlands neighborhood. It was listed on the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites in 2009 and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Anacostia Neighborhood Library is part of the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) System. It was opened to the public in 1942 .

Garfield Heights is a residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., bordering Prince George's County, Maryland. Garfield Heights contains both apartment units and single-family detached houses. Garfield Heights has gone through a wave of physical renovation and an increase in property values since 2006, along with an influx of wealthier residents. Rental apartment buildings throughout the quiet neighborhood have been converted to luxury style condominiums. Recently, Garfield Heights has emerged as one of Southeast's up-and-coming neighborhoods. Garfield Heights is bounded by Alabama Avenue to the west, Suitland Parkway to the southwest, Southern Avenue to the southeast, and Naylor Road to the northeast. It is a short walk from the Anacostia Community Museum. The neighborhood contains the schools Garfield Heights Elementary, Stanton Elementary, Kramer Middle School, Anacostia High School, and Rocketship Rise Academy.

Dupont Park is a residential neighborhood located in southeast Washington, D.C. It is bounded by Fort Dupont Park to the north, Pennsylvania Avenue SE to the south, Branch Avenue to the west, and Fort Davis Park to the east. The neighborhood civic association uses Fairlawn Avenue and the Anacostia Freeway as the western boundary of the neighborhood.Dupont Park is nestled into the parkland of Fort Davis and Fort Dupont Parks, the grounds of two Civil War-era forts that were constructed for the defense of Washington. The year-round Fort Dupont Ice Arena used for ice-skating and hockey is also located in this area. Dupont Park is a distinct neighborhood from the nearby Fort Dupont, although both border the park and take their name from it. Neither should Dupont Park be confused with Dupont Circle, a more commercial neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant.

Southeast (SE or S.E.) is the southeastern quadrant of Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, and is located south of East Capitol Street and east of South Capitol Street. It includes the Capitol Hill and Anacostia neighborhoods, the Navy Yard, the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB), the U.S. Marine Barracks, the Anacostia River waterfront, Eastern Market, the remains of several Civil War-era forts, historic St. Elizabeths Hospital, RFK Stadium, Nationals Park, and the Congressional Cemetery. It also contains a landmark known as "The Big Chair," located on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The quadrant is split by the Anacostia River, with the portion that is west of the river sometimes referred to as "Near Southeast". Geographically, it is the second-smallest quadrant of the city.

Fort Stanton is a residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is bounded by Erie St SE. to the north, Suitland Parkway to the south, 16th St. SE to the west, and 19th Pl SE to the east. The neighborhood is named after the nearby civil War defense Fort Stanton. Fort Stanton is part of Ward 7, represented by Vince Gray. Fort Stanton is situated between the neighborhoods of Anacostia, to the north, Barry Farm to the west, Garfield Heights to the East, and Douglass to the south. The nearby Anacostia Community Museum is located in Fort Stanton as well as the nearby Fort Stanton Recreation Center and Fort Stanton Pool.

Anacostia Park is operated by the United States National Park Service. It is one of Washington, D.C.'s largest and most important recreation areas, with over 1200 acres (4.9 km2) at multiple sites. Included in Anacostia Park is Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens and Kenilworth Marsh. Hundreds of acres are available for ballfields, picnicking, basketball, tennis, and the Anacostia Park Pavilion has some 3300 square feet (307 m2) of space for roller skating and special events. The Langston Golf Course offers an 18-hole course as well as a driving range, and three concession-operated marinas, four boat clubs, and a public boat ramp provide for access to the tidal Anacostia River for recreational boating. "Eagles' Nest", the headquarters of the United States Park Police helicopter aviation unit is located in Anacostia Park. Additionally, the headquarters of National Capital Parks-East is located within the park.
