Garfield Heights (Washington, D.C.)

Skyland is a neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is bounded by Good Hope Road to the northeast, Alabama Avenue to the southeast, and Fort Stanton Park to the south and west. It is part of Ward 8. Also see article on the Anacostia neighborhood. The District is in the midst of redeveloping the 18-acre (73,000 m2) Skyland Shopping Center at Alabama Avenue and Naylor Road, SE in Ward 7 into a mixed-used town center. The District is working with the Rappaport Cos. and the William S. Smith Cos. on a master plan for the site. Initial plans for Skyland Town Center call for more than 320,000 square feet (30,000 m2) of retail space—a combination of high-quality, large format national-brand retailers and neighborhood serving shops and restaurants. The project will also include 420 to 470 units of housing, about 80 percent of the units will be condos and 20 percent will be apartments. Several outstanding legal issues associated with the project have complicated the development process, but the District is working closely with the development team and its architects, Torti Gallas + Partners, to accelerate the pre-development work so the project moves on a parallel track with the legal process. The development team expects to have its master plan completed and a Planned Unit Development (PUD) application filed with the Zoning Commission by the spring of 2008. The District and development team are negotiating the business terms of their agreement. The DC Council has already approved a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) package to provide gap financing for the project. Skyland is within the Good Hope neighborhood and borders Hillcrest to the east and Naylor Gardens to the southeast.

Fort Stanton was a Civil War-era fortification constructed in the hills above Anacostia in the District of Columbia, USA, and was intended to prevent Confederate artillery from threatening the Washington Navy Yard. It also guarded the approach to the bridge that connected Anacostia (then known as Uniontown) with Washington. Built in 1861, the fort was expanded throughout the war and was joined by two subsidiary forts: Fort Ricketts and Fort Snyder. Following the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, it was dismantled and the land returned to its original owner. It never saw combat. Abandoned after the war, the site of the fort was planned to be part of a grand "Fort Circle" park system encircling the city of Washington. Though this system of interconnected parks never was fully implemented, the site of the fort is today a park maintained by the National Park Service, and a historical marker stands near the fort's original location.

Fort Stanton is a residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is bounded by Erie St SE. to the north, Suitland Parkway to the south, 16th St. SE to the west, and 19th Pl SE to the east. The neighborhood is named after the nearby civil War defense Fort Stanton. Fort Stanton is part of Ward 7, represented by Vince Gray. Fort Stanton is situated between the neighborhoods of Anacostia, to the north, Barry Farm to the west, Garfield Heights to the East, and Douglass to the south. The nearby Anacostia Community Museum is located in Fort Stanton as well as the nearby Fort Stanton Recreation Center and Fort Stanton Pool.

Douglass is a residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., on the eastern side of St. Elizabeths Hospital, on the border of the Congress Heights Metro Station. It is bounded by Suitland Parkway to the north and east, Alabama Avenue to the south, and the St. Elizabeths campus to the west. The Douglass neighborhood sits atop a hilly ridge that is the highest point in Southeast Washington, The area was once almost entirely dominated by two public housing complexes, Douglass Dwellings and Stanton Dwellings. It is now one of the up-and-coming areas of Washington, DC and experiencing a fair amount of retail investment and gentrification. The areas is close to THEARC (Town Hall Education Arts and Recreation Center), with institutions such as Trinity Washington University (formerly Trinity College), the School of the Washington Ballet and the Levine School of Music. The area has several new homes developments with houses priced in the $200–400,000 range. The area contains several historic Jewish cemeteries, including the Adas Israel and Elesavetgrad cemeteries and a relatively new Bet Mishpachah Cemetery. The neighborhood is named for the famed American abolitionist Frederick Douglass, whose homestead, Cedar Hill, sits approximately one mile north of his namesake community.

Park Naylor is a residential neighborhood located in southeast Washington, D.C. It takes its name from its northern and eastern borders, Naylor Road and Fort Stanton Park. Park Naylor's other boundaries are Minnesota Avenue to the west, and Good Hope Road SE to the south. Also see article on Anacostia.

Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) is a combined cultural and social services campus in Southeast Washington, D.C. The campus consists of three connected buildings, playgrounds, basketball courts and public spaces. In May 2007, THEARC won the Urban Land Institute's Award for Excellence and was cited for its contribution to the community, response to societal needs, innovation, public/private partnership and environmental protection and enhancement.

The Parklands-Turner Neighborhood Library is a branch of the District of Columbia Public Library in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. It is located at 1547 Alabama Avenue SE. A small library kiosk opened in the area in 1976, and a somewhat larger facility opened in 1984, which was eventually replaced in 2009 by a new $878,000 library facility.The notably small 4,900-square-foot library is located in a leased space in the Shops at Parkland strip mall. In 2019, the library system conducted a study of potential sites for an expanded library in the neighborhood, and the district has budgeted money for the project for fiscal year 2022.

Anacostia Neighborhood Library is part of the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) System. It was opened to the public in 1942 .

The Bet Mishpachah Cemetery is a recently established Jewish cemetery located in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The cemetery is for the Bet Mishpachah community (Hebrew: בית משפחה) located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. This cemetery is located on land purchased from Elesavetgrad Cemetery and is adjacent to the Ohev Shalom, Adas Israel, and Washington Hebrew cemeteries. The address is 3233 15th Place SE, Washington, D.C. The cemetery marker stated it was founded in 1973, however, that refers to the founding of the organization. The first plots to be used to inter members were obtained in March 2012. As of May 2013, no one has been interred in these plots.

Southern Avenue is an island platformed Washington Metro station in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The station was opened on January 13, 2001, and is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Providing service for only the Green Line, the station is located on the southern side of Southern Avenue, putting it just outside the District of Columbia, opposite Valley Terrace straddling the D.C/Maryland border. Southern Avenue is the first station in Maryland going southeast on the Green Line. Groundbreaking for the final segment of the Green Line occurred on September 23, 1995, and the station opened on January 13, 2001. Its opening coincided with the completion of approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km) of rail southeast of the Anacostia station and the opening of the Congress Heights, Naylor Road, Suitland, and Branch Avenue stations.This station provides service to the National Harbor via Metrobus route NH1 and TheBus route 35.

Shipley Terrace, formerly known as Randle Heights, is a large residential neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., bordering Prince George's County, Maryland. The neighborhood, named after a former public housing complex in the neighborhood, which was largely occupied by low-income housing – primarily walkup and garden unit apartments. This neighborhood now has a mix of townhome communities, large single-family-home communities, as well as some low-income housing. It is a model neighborhood for the Hope VI revitalization Grant Program. Shipley Terrace is bounded by Alabama Avenue to the north, Mississippi Avenue to the south, Wheeler Road to the west, Suitland Parkway to the northeast, and Southern Avenue to the southeast. The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, administered by the National Park Service, is located at 1411 W Street, SE, in Anacostia, a neighborhood east of the Anacostia River in Southeast Washington, D.C. United States. Established in 1988 as a National Historic Site, the site preserves the home and estate of Frederick Douglass, one of the most prominent African Americans of the 19th century. Douglass lived in this house, which he named Cedar Hill, from 1877–1878 until his death in 1895. Perched on a hilltop, the site offers a sweeping view of the U.S. Capitol and the Washington, D.C., skyline. In 2017 the site was used to represent Washington, D.C., on its America the Beautiful quarter.
