The Turiec Basin (Slovak: Turčianska kotlina; Hungarian: Túróci-medence; German: Turzbecken; Latin: Pelvis Thuroczae) is located in the northern part of central Slovakia, within the Fatra-Tatra Area of the Inner Western Carpathians. The basin is delimited by the mountain ranges of Veľká Fatra to the east, Malá Fatra to the west and north, as well as Žiar and Kremnica Mountains to the south. The Turiec River flows through the entire basin and inflows into Váh near Vrútky. The largest towns are Martin, Vrútky (both part of the Martin District) and Turčianske Teplice (part of the Turčianske Teplice District).

The large open-air Museum of the Slovak Village (in Slovak: Múzeum slovenskej dediny) is situated on the outskirts of the northern city of Martin in Slovakia.

Dolný Kalník (Hungarian: Alsókálnok) is a village and municipality in Martin District in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia.

Martin District (okres Martin) is a district in the Žilina Region of central Slovakia. Its main cultural, economic and administrative seat is the city of Martin. Martin District is one of the most important cultural centers in Slovakia. The city of Martin is the location and seat of the largest Slovak library, the Slovak National Museum, the cultural organisation Matica Slovenská and the Slovak Red Cross. In the district are 16 sport clubs, including ice hockey, football and handball, which all have their separate sport halls. Martin District economy is based foremost on the engineering industry, but also on the wood processing, construction, paper and cellulose industries.

Turiec is a region in central Slovakia, one of the 21 official tourism regions. The region is not an administrative division today, but between the late 11th century and 1920 it was the Turóc County in the Kingdom of Hungary.

Obchodná akadémia Martin (English: Business Academy Martin) or (OAMT) is a co-educational public secondary school in Martin, Slovakia, founded in 1885 as the Turiec Saint Martin Hungarian Royall Secondary school OAMT offers business-oriented courses to prepare students for careers in finance, economics, law and marketing. The school also combines its business curriculum with an extensive academic program that gears towards preparation for university. Since 1988 the school headquarters the OAMT Language Center which provides language courses and language certificates in English, German, Spanish, Russian, French and Italian According to the latest National examination ranking, the school belongs to one of the top Business oriented high schools in Slovakia. In the years 2010-2011 the school undertook a reconstruction of its main building financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine or Jessenius School of Medicine (Slovak: Jesseniova lekárska fakulta) is a co-educational medical school in Martin, Slovakia. It is the academic medical teaching and research arm of Comenius University. It is one of the thirteen faculties of the university, and is the only one of the faculties of the university that is not located in Bratislava. Jessenius has consistently been Slovakia's number one medical school according to the Slovak University Ranking and Rating Association and is ranked as one of the top medical schools in Central Europe. Its major teaching hospital, the Martin University Hospital, has constantly been ranked among the best hospitals in Slovakia; as of 2011, it is ranked second. Along with its Slovak-taught programs, the school also offers a 6-year English-language program in medicine leading to the title Doctor of Medicine (M.D., international title), PhD programs in medicine and odontology and several master’s degree programs in nursing and public health.Since 2001, the school has published the scholarly journal Acta Medica Martiniana (AMM) as a successor to Folia Medica Martiniana, which was published intermittently from 1971 to 1996. AMM is published periodically with three issues per year in English and publishes original research papers, as well as review articles in both medical and biomedical sciences as well as nursing.Jessenius also headquarters three National Centers of Excellence, funded through the Science and Research program of the EU, which are cutting-edge institutions for perinatology and pulmonology research (both basic science and clinical) and emphasizes medical innovation, novel methods, discoveries, and intovations. The current dean of the medical school is Andrea Čalkovská, a professor of physiology, who succeeded gynecologist Ján Danko in 2018.

Martin (Slovak pronunciation: [ˈmartin] Hungarian: Turócszentmárton, German: Turz-Sankt Martin, Latin: Sanctus Martinus / Martinopolis) is a city in northern Slovakia, situated on the Turiec river, between the Malá Fatra and Veľká Fatra mountains, near the city of Žilina. The population numbers approximately 54,000, which makes it the ninth-largest city in Slovakia. It is the center of the Turiec region and the District of Martin.

Turóc (Hungarian, historically also spelled Túrócz), Slovak: Turiec, Latin: Thurotzium/comitatus Thurociensis, German: Turz) was an administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory is now in north-western Slovakia, where the corresponding Slovak name Turiec is only an informal designation of the corresponding territory.
