Turiec is a region in central Slovakia, one of the 21 official tourism regions. The region is not an administrative division today, but between the late 11th century and 1920 it was the Turóc County in the Kingdom of Hungary.

Martin District (okres Martin) is a district in the Žilina Region of central Slovakia. Its main cultural, economic and administrative seat is the city of Martin. Its territory is now in north-western Slovakia, where the corresponding Slovak name Turiec is only an informal designation of the corresponding territory.

The Jessenius Faculty of Medicine or Jessenius School of Medicine (Slovak: Jesseniova lekárska fakulta) is a co-educational medical school in Martin, Slovakia. It is the academic medical teaching and research arm of Comenius University. It is one of the thirteen faculties of the university, and is the only one of the faculties of the university that is not located in Bratislava. Jessenius has consistently been Slovakia's number one medical school according to the Slovak University Ranking and Rating Association and is ranked as one of the top medical schools in Central Europe. Its major teaching hospital, the Martin University Hospital, has constantly been ranked among the best hospitals in Slovakia; as of 2011, it is ranked second. Along with its Slovak-taught programs, the school also offers a 6-year English-language program in medicine leading to the title Doctor of Medicine (M.D., international title), PhD programs in medicine and odontology and several master’s degree programs in nursing and public health.Since 2001, the school has published the scholarly journal Acta Medica Martiniana (AMM) as a successor to Folia Medica Martiniana, which was published intermittently from 1971 to 1996. AMM is published periodically with three issues per year in English and publishes original research papers, as well as review articles in both medical and biomedical sciences as well as nursing.Jessenius also headquarters three National Centers of Excellence, funded through the Science and Research program of the EU, which are cutting-edge institutions for perinatology and pulmonology research (both basic science and clinical) and emphasizes medical innovation, novel methods, discoveries, and intovations. The current dean of the medical school is Andrea Čalkovská, a professor of physiology, who succeeded gynecologist Ján Danko in 2018.

EduKey (BellAmos) School is a private, co-educational day school for grades K-9 located in Martin, Slovakia. EduKey (BellAmos) is a member of the Slovak National Association of Independent Schools, educating students from all across the Žilina area from nursery school to the ninth grade. It also hosts international students coming from various parts of the world (Great Britain, South Africa, Germany etc.) It is Slovak's oldest independent school. Košúty (Hungarian: Kossuth) is a borough of Martin, Slovakia. Košúty was initially a separate village, it has been merged in 1919 with a neighboring village Priekopa and it became a borough of Martin in 1949. The first written mention of Košúty was in 1397 as a village named Cosuthfalua, when belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. The name is derived from a personal name of Slavic origin Košút (the Hungarian transcription Kossuth, see also etymology). This is supported also by another record stating that the village was owned by Andrew, son of Kosuth and by its later name Udwarch a. n. Kosswthfalwa – "Court or Košut's village" (1489).A history of the village is closely tied to the House of Kossuth.

The Turiec Basin (Slovak: Turčianska kotlina; Hungarian: Túróci-medence; German: Turzbecken; Latin: Pelvis Thuroczae) is located in the northern part of central Slovakia, within the Fatra-Tatra Area of the Inner Western Carpathians. The basin is delimited by the mountain ranges of Veľká Fatra to the east, Malá Fatra to the west and north, as well as Žiar and Kremnica Mountains to the south. The Turiec River flows through the entire basin and inflows into Váh near Vrútky. The largest towns are Martin, Vrútky (both part of the Martin District) and Turčianske Teplice (part of the Turčianske Teplice District).
