At approximately 6:24 AM CET on the morning of 22 March 2020, an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 Mw, 5.5 ML, hit Zagreb, Croatia, with an epicenter 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) north of the city centre. The maximum felt intensity was VII–VIII (Very strong to Damaging) on the Medvedev–Sponheuer–Karnik scale. The earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks, the strongest of which with a magnitude of 5.0. It was the strongest earthquake in Zagreb since the 1880 earthquake and caused substantial damage in the historical city center. More than 1,900 buildings were reported to have been damaged to the point of becoming uninhabitable. The earthquake was also felt in Slovenia. One person was killed and 27 others were injured. The earthquake occurred during the coronavirus pandemic and complicated the enforcement of social distancing measures set out by the Government of Croatia. It occurred during the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The direct earthquake damage inflicted on Zagreb and Krapina-Zagorje County was estimated at 86 billion Croatian kuna (€11.5 billion).

Bukovac is a neighbourhood in the northeast of Zagreb, Croatia, within the Maksimir district. The area of the local city council of Bukovac has a population of 6,658 (census 2021). The area was integrated into the city of Zagreb in the latter half of the 20th century. The neighbourhood encompasses the Bukovac street, while the nearby Bukovačka street (adjectival form of Bukovac) is instead part of the local councils of Maksimir and Remete.

Remete is a neighbourhood in the northeast of Zagreb, Croatia, within the Maksimir district. The area of the local city council of Remete has a population of 5,923 (census 2021). The old village of Remete was known since the Middle Ages, especially for its Marian shrine, today known as the Shrine of the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary of Remete. At the time, it attracted even more pilgrims than the shrine in Marija Bistrica. Remete was integrated into the city of Zagreb in 1949.

Maksimir (pronounced [mǎksimiːr]) is one of the districts of Zagreb, Croatia, population 48,902 (2011 census). Maksimir stadium and Maksimir Park are located in it. It was named for Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac. The urban center of the Maksimir district is located around the Maksimirska street, which is an area of dense commercial and residential usage. It spans from the Kvaternik Square, located on the southwestern border of the district, to the intersection of Maksimirska, Bukovačka and Svetice streets, which leads to the entrances to both the Maksimir park and the Maksimir stadium. The southeastern part of the district is a lowland that includes the Maksimir stadium and a large residential area best known as Ravnice (lit. "plains"). A substantial area in the east of the district is part of the Maksimir Park, one of the biggest parks in Zagreb. It also contains the Zagreb Zoo, which is the second-largest in Croatia; and five lakes, called the Maksimir lakes. The central part of the district is mostly residential, with the notable exception of the large campus of the University Hospital Centre Zagreb. The northern parts of the district are hilly, residential areas, with no high-rise buildings. The district is bordered by Gornji Grad - Medveščak to the east, Donji grad to the southeast, Pešćenica to the south, Dubrava to the west, and Podsljeme to the north.

Gojko Šušak Avenue (Croatian: Avenija Gojka Šuška) is an avenue in northeastern Zagreb, Croatia. It serves as part of the boundary between city districts Maksimir and Gornja Dubrava. Spanning between Štefanovec Road and Dubrava Avenue, the avenue has four lanes and a parking lot along its western side. Its most important intersection is with Oporovečka Road. At its southern end, the road continues as the short four-lane Mandlova Road. Some of the most important buildings in Zagreb are located on the Avenue. In particular, Clinical Hospital Dubrava (also referred to as Nova bolnica, New hospital), located on its eastern side, and the Police Academy, located on the western side. The avenue north of the busy Oporovečka Road is underused, but there are projects to make it a part of the inner city ring road and extend it to the route of the planned northern arm of Zagreb bypass. The avenue is named after Gojko Šušak, the late Croatian Minister of Defense. Before Šušak's death it was named Scout Alley (Croatian: Aleja izviđača).

Maksimir Park is the oldest public park in Zagreb, Croatia. It forms part of the city's cultural heritage and is a habitat for many different plant and animal species.

Kozjak is a neighbourhood in the northeast of Zagreb, Croatia, within the Maksimir district. The area of the local city council of Kozjak has a population of 4,052 (census 2021). The area was integrated into the city of Zagreb in the 20th century. The City Theatre Žar ptica is located in the neighbourhood, near Mirogoj.

Deutsche Internationale Schule Zagreb (DISZ, Croatian: Njemačka međunarodna škola u Zagrebu) is a German international school in Zagreb, Croatia. It serves kindergarten, grundschule, and gymasium leading up to Abitur.It is a part of the EuroCampus Zagreb, with the École française de Zagreb. The EuroCampus opened on September 1, 2005.

French School in Zagreb (French: École Française de Zagreb EFZ, Croatian: Francuska škola Zagreb) is a French international school in the EuroCampus in Zagreb, Croatia. The school opened in 1996 and started classes at the EuroCampus, which also houses the Deutsche Internationale Schule in Zagreb, on September 1, 2005.The school directly teaches primaire (primary) and collège (junior high school) levels. Lycée (senior high school/sixth form) students take classes by the National Centre for Distance Education (CNED) distance education service.

Markuševec is a neighbourhood in the northeast of Zagreb, Croatia, within the Podsljeme district. The area of the local city council of Markuševec has a population of 6,236 (census 2021). The old village of Markuševec was known for centuries, and used to be called Sv. Šimun (St. Simon), after the local Catholic Church, one of the oldest in the Zagreb Diocese, dated to 1276, with the current altar built in 1476. The village was renamed to Markuševec in the 16th century after a magnate called Markuscz raised a significant population of servants and serfs that received the moniker 'Markusczevi'. The area was integrated into the city of Zagreb in 1949. Between 1955 and 1967, and then between 1974 and the 1990s, Markuševec was part of the administrative area of Maksimir. The current administrative layout dates to 2009.

Podsljeme (pronounced [pǒtsʎeme]) is a city district situated in the foothills of Zagreb's mountain Medvednica and its name stands for "under Sljeme" (Sljeme is the peak of the Medvednica mountain). It has the status of četvrt (quarter, district, borough) and as such has an elected council. It is located about 5km north of central Zagreb.Podsljeme had 19,165 residents in 2011. Its residents are mainly upper middle or upper class. Podsljeme is an affluent part of Zagreb with a high cost per square meter, about 3500 Euros per square meter. Upper-middle-class homes and dense deciduous forest prevail in this area. Many of the city's tycoons, political personalities and celebrities live in the district.
