Sopron District

Sopron (German: Ödenburg) was an administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory is now divided between Austria and Hungary. The capital of the county was Sopron.

Sopron (Hungarian pronunciation: [ˈʃopron]; German: Ödenburg, German pronunciation: [ˈøːdn̩ˌbʊʁk] (listen); Slovene: Šopron) is a city in Hungary on the Austrian border, near Lake Neusiedl/Lake Fertő.

The Káposztás utcai Stadion is a multi-use stadium in Sopron, Hungary. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of MFC Sopron. The stadium is able to hold 5,300 people and was reconstructed in 2003.

Aréna Sopron (official sponsored name Novomatic Musical Aréna Sopron, previously MKB Aréna) is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Sopron, Hungary. Its best known tenant is the women's basketball club UNIQA Sopron, one of the top teams of the Hungarian championship. They also play in the EuroLeague Women where they have reached the Final Four in 2009. The arena hosts other indoor sports as well as cultural events, exhibitions, shows and musicals. In addition, it features a hotel, a restaurant and a fitness center.In 2005, the managing company of Uniqua Euroleasing Sopron, Raabersport Kft. acquired the operating rights of the arena, and completely renovated it.

The main campus of the University of Sopron (Hungarian: Soproni Egyetem, abbreviated SOE) is located in Sopron, Hungary. The school traces its roots to 1735. The QS World University Rankings placed the University of Sopron in the 251-300 range in the Emerging Europe and Central Asia in 2022.

Sopronbánfalva (German: Wandorf), also known as Bánfalva, is a former village part of the city of Sopron, Hungary, since 1950. Before 1945, the village had 3,304 inhabitants, with the majority being ethnic Germans. However, many were deported, remaining only approximately 700 inhabitants after the event. This happened due to the desire to, among other things, secure the border with Austria.

Sopronkőhida is a village in northwestern Hungary, 4 km north of the city Sopron and 5 km south of the border with Austria.

Balf (German: Wolfs) is a town in Hungary, a district of Sopron. It has approximately 1,000 inhabitants.

Kópháza (Croatian: Koljnof) is a village in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, Hungary.

Fertőrákos (German: Kroisbach) is a village in the county of Győr-Moson-Sopron in Hungary. In 2001 it had a population of 2,182. It is located at 47°43′15″N 16°39′0″E, about 10 km (6 mi) from Sopron, near Lake Fertő (German: Neusiedler See) and the Austrian border. In summer, a border checkpoint for pedestrians and cyclists connects it to the Austrian municipality of Mörbisch am See (Hungarian: Meggyes). The Fertorakos mithraeum is visible near the border. Fertőrákos also features a small port with a border checkpoint, and a sand beach swimming area, access to which prior to 1989 was restricted to the communist elite. The village was first mentioned in 1199 under the name Racus. In 1457 it was first mentioned in German language as Krewspach, later Kroisbach. Today, it forms part of the Austrian-Hungarian national park and joint World Heritage Site of Lake Fertő. The Wagner - Liszt Fesztivál is an annual event held at the Fertőrákos cave theater and in Sopron. Following the occupation of Hungary in 1944, the new extremist pro-nazi regime established a 'transit/labour camp' in a quarry in Fertőrákos, to which Hungarian Jewish and political prisoners were sent, and many thousands died here, with others transported onward to Nazi concentration camps in German-occupied Poland and Germany. The site of the transit camp can be visited, and has a memorial plaque.

Ágfalva (German: Agendorf) is a village in Hungary, in the north-western Győr-Moson-Sopron region, 4 kilometers from Sopron and two kilometers from the border of Austria. Ágfalva was first mentioned in a document from 1194. Archaeological evidence proves inhabitation at least since Roman occupation. In 1207 the village is mentioned as Dagendorf, probably the name of the owner. The first church was built in 1265, it was pulled down in 1789 to be replaced by a new church, the catholic St George church (1792). The Protestants received permission to build a church in 1784. Until 1892 the service was in German. In 1892 the railway to Brennbergbánya was constructed.
