Quendon Wood

Quendon and Rickling is a civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England with an area of 2,048 acres. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 was 587. It is a linear settlement on the B1383 (formerly the A11 trunk road) between Saffron Walden and Bishops Stortford. Quendon & Rickling stand 300 feet above sea level on a watershed between two rivers: the Cam to the east, flowing north through Cambridge to the Ouse flowing on to the Wash.

Ugley is a small village and civil parish in the non-metropolitan district of Uttlesford in Essex, England. It is about 2 miles (3 km) north from Stansted Mountfitchet, and situated between Saffron Walden and Bishop's Stortford. Within the parish is the village of Ugley Green, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the south. Ugley was first recorded in 1041 as "Uggele". It appears in the Domesday Book as "Ugghelea", in the ancient hundred of Claverling. The name probably means "woodland clearing of a man named Ugga."Within Ugley there are several buildings of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Grade II* listed church, St Peter's, has a 13th-century nave and a Tudor brick tower. Orford House is a Grade II* listed building built by Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford, c.1700.The village's name has been noted on lists of unusual place names.

Hall's Quarry is a 0.8-hectare (2.0-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Ugley Green in Essex. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.The site is divided between two small blocks of land. It exposes glacial gravels, silts and tills deposited during the Anglian ice age around 450,000 years ago. The gravels provide an unusual opportunity to see the type of material carried into the London area by this glaciation. The site is described by Natural England as "extremely important for the study of the Anglian glaciation and its associated deposits".The site is on private land with no public access.

Orford House is a country house in the small medieval hamlet of Ugley, Essex, England.

Ugley Green is a small village in the district of Uttlesford in Essex, England. It is approximately 6 miles (10 km) north-east from Bishops Stortford, and just to the west of the M11 motorway. The village is within the civil parish of Ugley, a smaller settlement 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the north. The village contains two Grade II listed 19th-century houses, and a post-medieval house.The village hall was built in 1920. Occupations in 1933 included four farmers, a carpenter, a stationer & sub-postmaster, a blacksmith, a gravel merchant, a beer retailer, a shopkeeper, a steward to Wades Hall, and the licensee of the White Hart public house. Wades Hall is the remaining wing of a larger house dating to the 16th century, Grade II listed, and approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) northwest from the village.

Aubrey Buxton Nature Reserve is a 9.7-hectare (24-acre) nature reserve west of Elsenham in Essex. It was donated to the Essex Wildlife Trust by Aubrey Buxton and his wife in 1976.The site was previously a park for Norman House. It is woodland on a sandy and gravel soil, with meadows and six man-made ponds. Grassland plants include cowslips, wild strawberries and common spotted orchids. There are birds such as nuthatches and woodpeckers, and many species of butterfly. Black poplars, which are the county's rarest native tree, have been planted to replace trees lost to storm damage.There is access from a track off Alsa Street.

Rickling is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Quendon and Rickling, in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. The village is situated approximately 6 miles (10 km) north from the town of Bishop's Stortford. Saffron Walden, at 5 miles (8 km), and the larger village of Newport, at 2 miles (3 km), lie to the north-east. In 1931 the parish had a population of 378.Rickling is 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west from the village of Quendon. Rickling is the site of the parish church, All Saints, and a few houses. Rickling Green, 2 miles (3 km) from Rickling, is conjoined to Quendon.

Elsenham railway station is found on the West Anglia Main Line, serving the village of Elsenham in Essex, England. It is 35 miles 45 chains (57.2 km) down the line from London Liverpool Street, and is situated between Stansted Mountfitchet and Newport stations. Its three-letter station code is ESM. The station and all trains serving it are operated by Greater Anglia. The ticket office (on the London-bound platform) is staffed part-time; there are self-service ticket machines on each of the platforms (which are staggered, the country-bound being north of a level crossing and the London-bound being south of it) and a permit to travel machine is also available. Chapel of St Helen (also St Helen's Chapel) is an ancient religious building in Wicken Bonhunt, north-west Essex. It dates from around the 11th century and is believed to be one of the oldest surviving buildings in the east of England. It has also been described as 10th century.Pevsner's Essex architecture guide of 1954 describes it as: "A complete Norman chapel of nave and chancel with a number of original windows".The chapel is at Bonhunt Farm, on the B1038 (Newport to Buntingford) road and close to a motorway flyover for the M11.

Newport railway station is on the West Anglia Main Line serving the village of Newport in Essex, England. It is 39 miles 72 chains (64.2 km) down the line from London Liverpool Street and is situated between Elsenham and Audley End stations. Its three-letter station code is NWE. The station and all trains serving it are operated by Greater Anglia. It is sometimes printed as Newport (Essex) on tickets and timetables in order to distinguish it from other similarly-named stations. To the north of the station is the Audley End Viaduct. At 60 feet (18 m) high at its centre it is the tallest viaduct in Essex.
