Quendon Hall

Quendon is a linear village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Quendon and Rickling, in the Uttlesford district, in the county of Essex, England. Quendon is located on the B1383 (formerly the A11 trunk road) between Saffron Walden and Bishop's Stortford, around 0.5 miles (1 km) from Rickling Green, the main village centre of Rickling. The trunk road status was lost due to the opening of the parallel M11 motorway. In 1931 the parish had a population of 156.

Quendon & Rickling stand 300 feet above sea level on a watershed between two rivers: the Cam to the east, flowing north through Cambridge to the Ouse flowing on to the Wash.

Chapel of St Helen (also St Helen's Chapel) is an ancient religious building in Wicken Bonhunt, north-west Essex. It dates from around the 11th century and is believed to be one of the oldest surviving buildings in the east of England. It has also been described as 10th century.Pevsner's Essex architecture guide of 1954 describes it as: "A complete Norman chapel of nave and chancel with a number of original windows".The chapel is at Bonhunt Farm, on the B1038 (Newport to Buntingford) road and close to a motorway flyover for the M11.

Newport railway station is on the West Anglia Main Line serving the village of Newport in Essex, England. It is 39 miles 72 chains (64.2 km) down the line from London Liverpool Street and is situated between Elsenham and Audley End stations. Its three-letter station code is NWE. The station and all trains serving it are operated by Greater Anglia. It is sometimes printed as Newport (Essex) on tickets and timetables in order to distinguish it from other similarly-named stations. To the north of the station is the Audley End Viaduct. At 60 feet (18 m) high at its centre it is the tallest viaduct in Essex.

Quendon Wood is a 32.1-hectare (79-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Quendon in Essex.The site is ancient coppiced woodland with a rich variety of fauna on different types of soil. It is mainly pedunculate oak and hornbeam, with some areas having ash and maple, and others the rare birch and hazel. Plants in the understorey include bluebells, wild daffodils and herb-paris.Some parts are private with no public access, and there are extensive areas of tree felling.

Newport is a large village and civil parish in the Uttlesford district in Essex, near Saffron Walden. The village has a population of over 2,000, measured at 2,352 at the 2011 census.Located approximately 41 miles (66 kilometres) north of London, the village is situated amongst the arable fields of northern Essex. With a regular train service to London Liverpool Street and Cambridge from the Newport (Essex) railway station, the village is considered to be within commuting distance of the capital and as such attracts a number of workers from the City of London. Joyce Frankland Academy, a comprehensive co-educational secondary school, is also located in the village. Newport is the centre point of the long-distance path known as the Harcamlow Way, a figure-of-eight walk between Cambridge and Harlow. Consequently, it has a large number of walks radiating from its centre; short walks of surrounding interest include those heading towards Saffron Walden, the English Heritage property of Audley End House, or Prior Hall Barn in Widdington.

Saffron Walden Rural District was a rural district in the county of Essex, England. It was created in 1894 and later enlarged by the addition of the parishes of Berden, Birchanger, Elsenham, Farnham, Henham-on-the-Hill, Manuden, Stansted Mountfitchet and Ugley from the disbanded Stansted Rural District. It was named after and administered from Saffron Walden. Since 1 April 1974 it has formed part of the District of Uttlesford. At the time of its dissolution it consisted of the following 31 civil parishes. Joyce Frankland Academy, Newport, formerly Newport Free Grammar School, is a school in Newport, Essex, England. It was founded in 1588. The school is a mixed secondary school with a sixth form. It previously existed in different forms including a boarding school and a grammar school. The headteacher is Duncan Roberts and the vice headteacher is Ian Stoneham. As of 2012, there were 987 students, including 160 in the sixth form.It takes its current name after Dame Joyce Frankland (1531-1588), the only daughter of goldsmith Robert Trappes, who founded it as the "free Grammer Schole of Newport". Dame Frankland also made a number of educational bequests in her will to colleges at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

The Leper Stone or Newport Stone (grid reference TL520349) is a large sarsen stone near the village of Newport, Essex, England. The name Leper Stone probably derives from the hospital of St. Mary and St. Leonard (fn. 1156?), a nearby hospital for lepers. Passers by could have left offerings of alms for the hospital residents in a small depression atop the stone; the hospital grounds were sold in the sixteenth century, and only a portion of the wall near the stone remains.Julian Cope, Peter Herring, UK Geocaching along with D.G. Buckley and Ken Newton's paper for the Council of British Archaeology have suggested that the Leper Stone was set vertically in the ground as a megalithic menhir or standing stone. J.D. Hedges report of 1980 also classified it as a standing stone for English Heritage, who describe this type of monument as A stone or boulder which has been deliberately set upright in the ground. Similarly it has been described as a monolith by the Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian society.

Rickling is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Quendon and Rickling, in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. The village is situated approximately 6 miles (10 km) north from the town of Bishop's Stortford. Saffron Walden, at 5 miles (8 km), and the larger village of Newport, at 2 miles (3 km), lie to the north-east. In 1931 the parish had a population of 378.Rickling is 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west from the village of Quendon. Rickling is the site of the parish church, All Saints, and a few houses. Rickling Green, 2 miles (3 km) from Rickling, is conjoined to Quendon.

Ugley is a small village and civil parish in the non-metropolitan district of Uttlesford in Essex, England. It is about 2 miles (3 km) north from Stansted Mountfitchet, and situated between Saffron Walden and Bishop's Stortford. Within the parish is the village of Ugley Green, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the south. Ugley was first recorded in 1041 as "Uggele". It appears in the Domesday Book as "Ugghelea", in the ancient hundred of Claverling. The name probably means "woodland clearing of a man named Ugga."Within Ugley there are several buildings of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Grade II* listed church, St Peter's, has a 13th-century nave and a Tudor brick tower. Orford House is a Grade II* listed building built by Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford, c.1700.The village's name has been noted on lists of unusual place names.

Widdington is a village and civil parish near Saffron Walden, in the Uttlesford district, in the county of Essex, England. The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 504. The village is located near the M11 motorway. Widdington has a church dedicated to St Mary the Virgin. Prior's Hall, now a private residence, is a rare survival of a stone-built structure from the late tenth or early eleventh centuries; Prior's Hall barn, from the fourteenth-century, is nearby.Widdington was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Widituna. The entry reads: Widi(n)tuna: St Valery Abbey; Robert from Robert Gernon; Ranulf Peverel.
