Rickling, Essex

Quendon and Rickling is a civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England with an area of 2,048 acres. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 was 587. It is a linear settlement on the B1383 (formerly the A11 trunk road) between Saffron Walden and Bishops Stortford. Quendon & Rickling stand 300 feet above sea level on a watershed between two rivers: the Cam to the east, flowing north through Cambridge to the Ouse flowing on to the Wash.

The trunk road status was lost due to the opening of the parallel M11 motorway. In 1931 the parish had a population of 156.

Arkesden is a village and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. The village is 4.3 miles (7 km) south-west from Saffron Walden, approximately 6 miles (10 km) from Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, and 22 miles (35 km) north-west from the county town of Chelmsford. The Wicken Water stream flows through the village. Arkesden is referred to as "Archesdana" in the Doomsday book of 1086, located in the ancient hundred of Uttlesford.The parish, with its own council, is part of the parliamentary constituency of Saffron Walden, and according to the 2001 census, had a population of 363, increasing slightly to 366 at the 2011 census.The 13th-century parish church is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, heavily restored in 1855. The village has a village hall, on the church green, and one public house, the Axe and Compasses. The musician Steve Marriott (of rock band Small Faces) died in a fire at his home at Arkesden in 1991.

Wicken Bonhunt is a village and a civil parish of north-west Essex, in the non-metropolitan district of Uttlesford, England. It is on the B1038 (Buntingford) road and is midway between the larger villages of Newport and Clavering. The nearest town is Saffron Walden, approximately 5 miles (8 km) away. Stansted Airport is approximately 10 miles (16 km) away. The civil parish has a population of approximately 839.

Chapel of St Helen (also St Helen's Chapel) is an ancient religious building in Wicken Bonhunt, north-west Essex. It dates from around the 11th century and is believed to be one of the oldest surviving buildings in the east of England. It has also been described as 10th century.Pevsner's Essex architecture guide of 1954 describes it as: "A complete Norman chapel of nave and chancel with a number of original windows".The chapel is at Bonhunt Farm, on the B1038 (Newport to Buntingford) road and close to a motorway flyover for the M11.

Quendon Wood is a 32.1-hectare (79-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Quendon in Essex.The site is ancient coppiced woodland with a rich variety of fauna on different types of soil. It is mainly pedunculate oak and hornbeam, with some areas having ash and maple, and others the rare birch and hazel. Plants in the understorey include bluebells, wild daffodils and herb-paris.Some parts are private with no public access, and there are extensive areas of tree felling.

Clavering Castle remains are situated in the small parish village of Clavering in the county of Essex, England, 50m north of the church of St Mary and St Clement on the southern bank of the River Stort, some 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) north of Bishop's Stortford (grid reference TL471320).

Saffron Walden Rural District was a rural district in the county of Essex, England. It was created in 1894 and later enlarged by the addition of the parishes of Berden, Birchanger, Elsenham, Farnham, Henham-on-the-Hill, Manuden, Stansted Mountfitchet and Ugley from the disbanded Stansted Rural District. It was named after and administered from Saffron Walden. Since 1 April 1974 it has formed part of the District of Uttlesford. At the time of its dissolution it consisted of the following 31 civil parishes. Berden is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. Berden village is approximately 6 miles (10 km) north from Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire and 21 miles (34 km) north-west from the county town of Chelmsford. Berden parish, with its own parish council, is in the district of Uttlesford and in the parliamentary constituency of Saffron Walden. According to the 2001 census Berden had a population of 427, increasing to 465 at the census 2011.Berden was part of Clavering hundred and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a location with four villagers and five smallholders.

Berden Priory was a priory in Essex, England. This site now has a Grade II* listed late 16th-century timber-framed house, the centre of Berden Priory Farm.

Manuden is a village and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is located around 3+1⁄2 miles (6 km) north of Bishop's Stortford, in the neighbouring county of Hertfordshire, and around 8 miles (13 km) south-west of Saffron Walden. The village has its own parish council.Manuden is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of the settlements within Clavering hundred. Part of Manuden is designated as a conservation area, with several listed buildings in and around the village.The local church is St Mary the Virgin. A tablet within the church commemorates the Jacobean statesman and diplomat William Wade, who spent his retirement at Battles Hall in the village, and is buried in the church.There is a primary school in the village. In 2010, Manuden County Primary School topped the league table for English schools at KS2 with all pupils attaining level 5 in both English and maths.There are several active village organisations, including a local history society, junior football club and a cricket club.
