Barton Hill, Bristol

The Great Western Cotton Factory was opened on a site in Barton Hill, Bristol in April 1838 (1838-04) to spin and weave cotton into cloth. The cotton processed at the factory was brought from America to the port of Liverpool and carried by water to Bristol. It was the only example of a cotton mill in the south west of England, most other factories being in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire.

The Bristol Feeder Canal is a body of water in Bristol, England, that connects the Floating Harbour with the River Avon.It stretches from Netham Lock where it connects with the tidal Avon in the east, to Totterdown Basin where it connects to the Floating Harbour and the original course of the Avon in the west.

Bristol power stations supplied electricity to the City of Bristol and the surrounding area from 1893 to 1959. Temple Back and Avonbank (Feeder Road) power stations were built by the Bristol Corporation which operated them up to the nationalisation of the British electricity supply industry in 1948. The Avon Bridge is a railway bridge over the River Avon in Brislington, Bristol, England. It was built in 1839 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and has been designated by Historic England as a Grade I listed building. The contract was originally awarded to William Ranger, who fell behind with the build and had his construction plant seized so the Great Western Railway company could finish construction. Ranger started legal proceedings against the company, but they were eventually quashed by Lord Cranworth. The bridge carries the Great Western Main Line over the River Avon into Bristol Temple Meads station, approximately 300 metres (980 ft) west (downstream) of Netham Weir.

Lawrence Hill railway station is on the Severn Beach Line and Cross Country Route, serving the inner-city districts of Easton and Lawrence Hill in Bristol, England. It is 1.0 mile (1.6 km) from Bristol Temple Meads. Its three letter station code is LWH. The station has two platforms, four running lines and minimal facilities. It is managed by Great Western Railway, the seventh company to be responsible for the station and the third franchise since privatisation in 1997. They provide all train services at the station, the standard service being two trains per hour along the Severn Beach Line and an hourly service between Bristol Temple Meads and Filton Abbey Wood. The station was opened in 1863 by the Bristol and South Wales Union Railway, with a single track and platform. The line was doubled in 1874 when the Clifton Extension Railway opened, then expanded to four tracks and platforms in 1891. There were buildings on all platforms and a goods yard to the west. Service levels reduced significantly over the second half of the twentieth century. The goods facilities were closed in 1965, staff were withdrawn in 1967 and the eastern two platforms were taken out of service by 1974. The line is due to be electrified as part of the 21st-century modernisation of the Great Western Main Line, which will also see the addition of two new running lines to increase capacity. Service frequency will be improved as part of the Greater Bristol Metro scheme.

St Philip's Marsh is an industrial inner suburb of Bristol, England. It is bounded by River Avon and Harbour feeder canal making it an almost island area, unlike the other two areas surrounded by water, it was historically part of Gloucestershire and is part of North Bristol. The site is home of Avonmeads Retail Park, a large retail and leisure park with Showcase Cinemas and a Hollywood Bowl ten-pin bowling centre among its tenants. It was extensively redeveloped in the 15 years to 2007. A bypass runs over the River Avon creating a major transport link from the A4 road in south east Bristol, to junction 3 of the M32 motorway near the city centre. In past years St Philip's marsh was a housing development for the workers of Bristol's market area (now known as Old Market). One of St Philip's' more influential residents during the early 1900s was George Townsend, a major property developer of the South Bristol area. His family home situated in the St Anne's area of Bristol is still standing today and a reminder of Bristol's history. Today there is very little housing in the area making it almost deserted at night, and other than the retail area it does contain one shop, pub, takeaway and Sparke Evans Park. St Davids Welsh Anglican Church was sited on Feeder road until demolition in 1922. Other churches in the area include St Silas (also Feeder Road) which was damaged during the Bristol Blitz.

St Philip's Marsh depot is a railway depot located in the St Philip's Marsh district of Bristol, England. It was established as a steam locomotive shed in 1910 but this facility closed in the 1960s. A new diesel facility opened nearby at Marsh Junction in 1959). This has since been combined with a new shed which was opened in 1976 to maintain new InterCity 125 trainsets.

St Matthew's Church was an Anglican parish church in Bristol, England. It was located in the west of Redfield, on Church Road (formerly Redfield Road), part of the A420. The church was built in 1873 to serve the new parish of Moorfields, formed from parts of the parishes of St George and Easton. The church was constructed in Gothic style to the design of J.C. Neale, although the south aisle was not built until 1887.Mervyn Stockwood, later Bishop of Southwark, was curate here from 1936 to 1941, and vicar from 1941 to 1955. From 1945 to 1948 John Robinson, later Bishop of Woolwich and author of Honest to God, was curate at St Matthew's as his first position after ordination.The church was closed in 1999, and has now been converted into apartments and offices, known as Stockwood Chambers. The former parish now forms part of the parish of St Luke with Christ Church, Barton Hill and St Matthew, Moorfields.

The Clarks Wood Company warehouse is a 19th-century industrial building in Silverthorne Lane, Bristol. It dates from about 1863, but only two of its original walls remain. It is known to have been used early in its history as a railhead warehouse for William Butler's tar works at nearby Crew's Hole, and later became part of St Vincent's Works.It is an example of the Bristol Byzantine style of architecture, and has been listed by English Heritage as a grade II listed building.

Moorfields is an area of Bristol, England. It lies in the east of the city, east of Barton Hill, south of Easton and west of Redfield. The name is no longer in common use, and the area is now generally considered parts of Easton and Redfield. Moorfields derives its name from a wealthy Bristol fishmonger named Samuel Moore, who invested in land in the area at the beginning of the 19th century. He built 40 cottages and an imposing residence (Moore's Lodge) around a square called Moorfields Square south of Church Road (then known as Redfield Road). The Lodge was demolished in the early 1900s. The cottages were demolished in 1930. Further development followed in the 1870s, when hundreds of terraced houses were built north of Church Road around Russell Town Avenue (then known as Dean Lane). This working class area survived as a distinct community until it was redeveloped in the 1950s and 1960s. The City Academy Bristol now occupies much of the site. In 1873 the growing population led to the formation of a new ecclesiastical parish of Moorfields from parts of the parishes of St George and Easton. The parish church of St Matthew, Moorfields was constructed in Gothic style at the corner of Church Road and Cowper Street. The church was closed in 1999, and has now been converted into apartments and offices. Moorfields now forms part of the parish of St Luke, Barton Hill with Christ Church and St Matthew, Moorfields.
