WYLD (940 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in New Orleans, Louisiana. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., and it broadcasts an urban gospel radio format, known as "Hallelujah 940" Some Christian talk and teaching programs are also heard. By day, WYLD is powered at 10,000 watts. Because 940 AM is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A stations XEQ in Mexico City and CFNV in Montreal, WYLD must greatly reduce its power at night to 500 watts to avoid interference. It uses a directional antenna at all times. The transmitter is off Tullis Drive in the Algiers district of New Orleans.

Aurora is a community of Algiers in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is divided into three areas: Old Aurora, Walnut Bend, and Huntlee Village. From the 1950s, the original name of the Old Aurora neighborhood was Aurora Gardens. The residential subdivision was developed on acreage which formerly belonged to the Aurora Plantation.Part of the Battle of New Orleans (1814–1815) was waged in Aurora along the west bank of the Mississippi River. There remain some earthworks near the river and a state historical marker to commemorate the event.

It is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., with studios on Howard Avenue. WODT is powered at 5,000 watts full-time. To protect other stations on 1280 AM from interference, it uses a directional antenna with a three-tower array. The transmitter is in the Algiers district of New Orleans. Programming is also heard on 45-watt FM translator K244FX at 96.7 MHz in New Orleans.

Brechtel Park is a 120 acre urban park in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. The park was founded in 1971 using funds from the Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund, and is maintained by the New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways. Brechtel is a stop on the Barataria Loop of America’s Wetlands Birding Trail.The Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism lists the birds living in or seasonally visiting the park as including: great blue, little blue, and green herons; great and snowy egrets; yellow-crowned night herons; white ibis; wood ducks; tree swallows; Mississippi kites; red-shouldered hawks; broad-winged hawks; mourning doves; yellow-billed cuckoos; barred owls; eastern screech owls; red-bellied, downy, hairy, and pileated woodpeckers; great crested flycatchers; white-eyed, yellow-throated, red-eyed, and blue-headed vireos; blue jays; barn swallows; Carolina wrens; Carolina chickadees; tufted titmice; summer tanagers; northern cardinals; sharp-shinned hawks; yellow-bellied sapsuckers; northern flickers; eastern phoebes; golden-crowned and ruby-crowned kinglets; hermit thrush; cedar waxwings; orange-crowned and yellow-rumped warblers; and white-throated sparrows.

WLNO (1060 AM) – branded WLNO 1060 AM – was a commercial urban gospel radio station licensed to serve New Orleans, Louisiana. Owned by Eternity Media Group WLNO, LLC, the station served the New Orleans metropolitan area. The WLNO transmitter site was located in Belle Chasse. The station went on the air in 1924 as WABZ; it became WBBX in 1933, WBNO in 1934, and WNOE after James A. Noe purchased the station in 1939. It became the first Top 40 station in New Orleans in the 1950s, shifting to album rock in the early 1970s and country music in 1981. WNOE was sold to Communicom Company in 1995 and became Christian radio station WLNO. After the station suspended operations in 2014, Eternity Media Group bought WLNO in 2015 and revived it as an urban gospel station; by October 2021, it had left the air for good, though its license remained active into 2025.

The Murphy Oil USA refinery spill was an oil spill that resulted from the failure of a storage tank at the Murphy Oil USA petroleum refinery in the residential areas of Chalmette and Meraux, Louisiana, United States, on August 30, 2005, the day after Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast.On August 29, 2005, the storm surge from the hurricane caused massive failure in the levees along the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Canal, inundating St. Bernard Parish with 4 to 14 feet (1.2 to 4.3 m) of water. The Murphy Oil refinery was flooded with 6 to 18 feet (1.8 to 5.5 m) of water, and a 250,000-barrel (40,000 m3) above-ground storage tank at the refinery was dislodged from its moorings and damaged in the flooding. At the time, the tank contained approximately 65,000 barrels (10,300 m3) of mixed crude oil; a breach in the tank's side wall released up to 25,110 barrels (1,055,000 US gal), though the pressure from the floodwaters kept the oil inside of the tank until the waters had receded to about 4 feet (1.2 m), five days after the storm had passed. As the oil was released, it mixed with the floodwaters and flowed from east to west. The spoiled water impacted approximately 1,700 homes in adjacent residential neighborhoods of Chalmette, over an area of about 1 square mile (2.6 km2). Several canals were also impacted, including the 20 Arpent Canal, the 40 Arpent Canal, the Meraux Canal, the Corinne Canal, the DeLaRonde Canal, and various unnamed interceptor canals. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were about 44 oil spills in the area affected by Hurricane Katrina, though most occurred in areas of Plaquemines Parish which do not have large populations. The Murphy Oil USA spill was the exception.
