The stadium underwent several expansions and renovations in the 1990s and 2000s (decade), most notably the renewal of the irrigation and drainage systems, flood-lighting and the replacement of the field. The stadium's current highest attendance was recorded in 1964, when 32,989 spectators watched the Campeonato Paulista match between Santos and Corinthians.The funeral of Pelé was held here on 2 and 3 January 2023.

After his death, the chapel was abandoned for twenty years, when it was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1911. In 1915, it expanded, becoming the church. It was delivered in 1922 to the Capuchin friars, who started the new building in 1930, when they placed the cornerstone that would lead to the current basilica, which finally opened in 1945 and was elevated to the category of basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1952.

The Kestrel was a British barque that was built in 1871 with coal-fueled steam engines and three masts. She spent her career carrying goods across the Atlantic. On 11 February 1895 she was anchored at Santos, near São Paulo, Brazil, when she was caught in a tropical storm. Her anchor chain broke, and she was driven aground on to Boqueirao Beach. All but three crewmen were ashore when the ship was grounded, including Captain Cochrane. The remains of the ship were rediscovered in 2017 after they were uncovered by a storm.

It is the headquarters of the Diocese of Santos and the Parish of Our Lady of Rosario Aparecida, the oldest in the city. The old church of Santos, predecessor of the present cathedral was demolished in 1907 by being in an advanced state of deterioration. In 1909, the construction of the new church - the current temple - began, according to the design of the German engineer Maximilian Emil Hehl, professor of the Polytechnic School of São Paulo. Hehl designed a neo-Gothic style church at that time, with a dome over the Renaissance style cruiser. In general, the project is similar to the Metropolitan Cathedral of São Paulo, designed by Hehl himself. The church, still unfinished, was temporarily opened in 1924, with a Mass celebrated by the metropolitan archbishop Duarte Leopoldo e Silva. In 1925 the Diocese of Saints was created by Pope Pius XI, and the temple was elevated to the category of cathedral. The works of the church would not be finished until 1967.
