The Innere Stadt (German pronunciation: [ˈɪnərə ʃtat] (listen); Central Bavarian: Innare Stod) is the 1st municipal district of Vienna (German: 1. Bezirk) located in the center of the Austrian capital. The Innere Stadt is the old town of Vienna. Until the city boundaries were expanded in 1850, the Innere Stadt was congruent with the city of Vienna. Traditionally it was divided into four quarters, which were designated after important town gates: Stubenviertel (northeast), Kärntner Viertel (southeast), Widmerviertel (southwest), Schottenviertel (northwest).The Ringstraße circles the Innere Stadt along the route of the former city walls. The first district is, with a workforce of 100,745, the largest employment locale in Vienna. This is partially due to tourism, as well as the presence of many corporate headquarters due to the district's central location.

The Plague Column (German: die Wiener Pestsäule), or Trinity Column (German: Dreifaltigkeitssäule), is a Holy Trinity column located on the Graben, a street in the inner city of Vienna, Austria. Erected after the Great Plague epidemic in 1679, the Baroque memorial is one of the best known and most prominent sculptural artworks in the city. Christine M. Boeckl, author of Images of Plague and Pestilence, calls it "one of the most ambitious and innovative sculptural ensembles created anywhere in Europe in the post-Bernini era."

The Graben is one of the most famous squares in Vienna's first district, the city center. It begins at Stock-im-Eisen-Platz next to the Palais Equitable, and ends at the junction of Kohlmarkt and Tuchlauben. Another street in the first district is called Tiefer Graben (deep ditch). It is crossed by Wipplinger Straße by means of the Hohe Brücke, a bridge about 10 meters (33 ft) above street level.

The Deckergasse is a narrow lane (German: -gasse), in the Meidling district of Vienna, Austria, stretching from the Assmayergasse in the west to the Längenfeldgasse in the east. It was named in 1909, when the area around it was being developed, in honour of the Viennese portrait artist Georg Decker (1818–1894). The official record published by Karl Lueger, Mayor of Vienna, described him as "the outstanding Viennese painter (hervorragenden Wiener Maler)" and noted that the Deckergasse began near the end of Canalettogasse, named after Canaletto.As a pedestrian way (Fußweg), the Deckergasse crosses the Wilhelmsdorfer Park, popularly known as the Decker Park, which it divides, and the only significant building on it is a school, now called the Volksschule Deckergasse, or Parkschule VS Deckergasse, at number 1. When the park was redesigned in 1990, the Deckergasse was left open and was integrated into it.The Deckergasse is near the Längenfeldgasse station of the Vienna U-Bahn.

Dorotheergasse is a narrow lane (German: -gasse), terminating at the Graben to the north and Augustinerstraße to the south, part of the Old Town district of Vienna, Austria. It is named for the monastery of St. Dorothea, Dorotheerkloster. Dorotheergasse is home to Dorotheum, one of the world's oldest auction houses. The Jewish Museum Vienna is also located in Dorotheergasse.

The Palais Bartolotti-Partenfeld is a city-palace in central Vienna's 1st district, Inner City, on the corner of Graben and Dorotheergasse. It was originally built for the Bartolotti noble family and later bought by the Partenfeld family.

The Hofkriegsrat (or Aulic War Council, sometimes Imperial War Council) established in 1556 was the central military administrative authority of the Habsburg monarchy until 1848 and the predecessor of the Austro-Hungarian Ministry of War. Vindobona (Latin pronunciation: [wɪnˈdɔbɔna]; from Gaulish windo- "white" and bona "base/bottom") was a Roman military camp (or castra) in the province of Pannonia, located on the site of the modern city of Vienna in Austria. The settlement area took on a new name in the 13th century, being changed to Berghof, or now simply known as Alter Berghof (the Old Berghof).Around 1 AD the kingdom of Noricum was included in the Roman Empire. Henceforth, the Danube marked the border of the empire, and the Romans built fortifications and settlements on the banks of the Danube, including Vindobona with an estimated population of 15,000 to 20,000.

The Kohlmarkt (English: Cabbage Market) is one of the most famous streets in the center of Vienna. It stretches from Michaelerplatz to the Graben and is considered Vienna's luxury shopping street due to a high density of jewelers and branches of international fashion labels. Together with the Graben and the Kärntner Straße, the Kohlmarkt forms Vienna's so-called "Golden U" of inner-city shopping streets, which offer upscale stores and are pedestrian zones.
