Pedra da Gávea is a monolithic mountain in Tijuca Forest, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Composed of granite and gneiss, its elevation is 844 metres (2,769 ft), making it one of the highest mountains in the world that ends directly in the ocean. Trails on the mountain were opened up by the local farming population in the early 1800s; today, the site is under the administration of the Tijuca National Park.The mountain's name translates as Rock of the Topsail, and was given to it during the expedition of Captain Gaspar de Lemos, begun in 1501, and in which the Rio de Janeiro bay (today Guanabara Bay, but after which the city was named) also received its name. The mountain, one of the first in Brazil to be named in Portuguese, was named by the expedition's sailors, who compared its silhouette to that of the shape of a topsail of a carrack upon sighting it on January 1, 1502. That name in turn came to be given to the Gávea area of the city of Rio de Janeiro.Differential weathering on one side of the rock has created what is described as a stylized human face. Markings on another face of the rock have been described as an inscription. Geologists and scientists are nearly in agreement that the "inscription" is the result of erosion and that the "face" is a product of pareidolia. Furthermore, the consensus of archaeologists and scholars in Brazil is that the mountain should not be viewed as an archaeological site.

The HSBC Brazil Cup was an international golf exhibition tournament, sanctioned by the LPGA Tour and first played in 2009. The tournament took place over two days and 36 holes at the Itanhanga Golf Club in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The money earned did not count on the official LPGA money list, making the event an unofficial part of the LPGA Tour. The field for the inaugural event in January 2009 included only 15 players: 14 LPGA Tour members and a Brazilian amateur. In 2010, the field was expanded to 27 players, which included two amateurs, and was moved to late May. The 2011 tournament included thirty players, all professionals.The tournament title sponsor was HSBC, the world's largest banking group, with headquarters in London. Jardim Oceânico / Barra da Tijuca is a station on the Rio de Janeiro Metro that services the neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. It was previously simply named Jardim Oceânico, but was renamed alongside many others in August 2022 to include its neighborhood, Barra da Tijuca, in the name.The station is Line 4's terminus, though it is integrated with the BRT's Terminal Jardim Oceânico through exit C, facilitating access to the TransOeste BRT line.

São Conrado (Portuguese: /sɐ̃w̃ kõˈʁadu/) is a neighborhood in the South Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is nestled in between the neighborhoods of Barra da Tijuca to the southwest and Leblon to the northeast. The neighborhood takes its name from a small church, Igreja de São Conrado (Church of São Conrado), which was constructed early in the 20th century by Conrado Jacob Niemeyer (1831-1905). São Conrado, which ranks as one of the areas with the highest Human Development Index in Brazil, presents a stark contrast to Rocinha on its border, which is one of the largest and poorest favelas in Brazil. São Conrado is famous for its hang gliding (popular with locals and tourists alike), Fashion Mall which houses over 150 stores carrying national and international designers, and golf course. The neighborhood, or bairro, is made up of sophisticated residential buildings, night clubs, and elegant restaurants. The famous Morro Dois Irmãos, or Two Brothers Mountain, featured in movies, television shows, and postcards from the city, separates the neighborhood from the rest of the South Zone. It is also noted for the mansions on the foot of the Pedra da Gávea, the largest seaside granite rock on Earth, which separates São Conrado from the West Zone. The House at Canoas (Casa das Canoas), the private home of Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012), is located on Estrada das Canoas and is considered a masterpiece of Mid-century modern residential architecture.São Conrado has been the most expensive and sought-after address in Rio, with celebrities such as Xuxa and even the mayor calling the area home. Real estate in the neighborhood is some of the priciest in South America.

The LSH Hotel, formerly the Trump Hotel Rio de Janeiro, is a hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The hotel was announced in 2014, as a joint project between Donald Trump's company, The Trump Organization, and LSH Barra, a Brazilian-based developer. A portion of the hotel opened in August 2016, in time for the city's 2016 Summer Olympics. Later that year, a Brazilian prosecutor began investigating two small pension funds that contributed a total of $40 million to the project. The Trump Organization subsequently ended its management agreement with LHS Barra due to construction delays, and the hotel was renamed as the LHS Barra Hotel shortly thereafter.

Palace II was a tower block built at Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On February 22, 1998, parts of it collapsed, due to engineering error, killing eight people. Another part of its structure collapsed on February 27, 1998, and the remaining parts of the building were demolished on February 28, 1998. Before the building was demolished, researchers found empty piers and evidence of the usage of beach sand on the construction. All families had to move to hotels after the building's fall. They had no time to collect their personal objects in their apartments. Although most of them have not yet received any kind of indemnity from the company responsible for building their homes, the Superior Court of Justice of Brazil announced, on April 9, 2008, the unblocking of 13 million reais (~6.5 million US dollars) earned through the auction of a property of Sérgio Naya, the civil engineer who had designed and built the building, which will be given to the 130 families who lived there.

Rocinha (Portuguese pronunciation: [ʁɔˈsĩɲɐ], little farm) is the largest favela in Brazil, located in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea. Rocinha is built on a steep hillside overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and is located about one kilometre from a nearby beach. Most of the favela is on a very steep hill, with many trees surrounding it. Around 200,000 people live in Rocinha, making it the most populous favela in Brazil. Although Rocinha is officially categorized as a neighbourhood, many still refer to it as a favela. It developed from a shanty town into an urbanized slum. Today, almost all the houses in Rocinha are made from concrete and brick. Some buildings are three and four storeys tall and almost all houses have basic sanitation, plumbing and electricity. Compared to simple shanty towns or slums, Rocinha has a better developed infrastructure and hundreds of businesses such as banks, medicine stores, bus routes, cable television, including locally based channel TV ROC (TV Rocinha), and, at one time, a McDonald's franchise. These factors help classify Rocinha as a favela bairro, or favela neighborhood.

Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro (EARJ, the American School of Rio de Janeiro) is a non-profit twin-campus international school located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The school was founded in 1937 as a private, independent, coeducational, non-denominational day school. EARJ offers an educational program from Nursery through Grade 12 for students of all nationalities. In 2019-20, enrolment was 1,200 students across the Gávea and Barra campuses with 160 members of teaching faculty.
