The Jonathan W. Allen Stable is a historic building located at 148 East 40th Street between Lexington and Third avenues in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Designed and built by Charles E. Hadden, the structure was originally constructed in 1871 as a private horse stable for Jonathan W. Allen. It was later converted to accommodate commercial uses and has been designated as a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The Allerton 39th Street House, now Pod 39, is a hotel at 145 East 39th Street between Lexington and Third avenues in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. The building, completed in 1918 as a men-only club hotel, was designed for the Allerton Company by Arthur Loomis Harmon. It subsequently served as a single room occupancy residence for women run by the Salvation Army from 1956 to 2007. Since 2012, the building has operated as the Pod 39 hotel. The Allerton 39th Street House is a New York City designated landmark. The building is variously cited as 15 or 17 stories high and is designed in the Northern Italian Renaissance style. To keep the cost of the building economical, Harmon decided to use inexpensive red brick for the façade with architectural terracotta decorations. Harmon designed the upper stories of the structure as an exposed tower visible from all directions, which was topped by a roof garden and penthouse. The public areas in the building were also designed in the Italian Renaissance style and originally consisted of a two-story lounge, a small lobby, and an office. The upper stories have included bedrooms ever since the building's opening. Over the years, both the public and private areas have been redesigned.

The George S. Bowdoin Stable is a historic building located at 149 East 38th Street between Lexington and Third avenues in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Designed by Ralph S. Townsend, the structure was originally constructed in 1902 as a private horse stable for William R. H. Martin. Over the years, it has accommodated a variety of other uses, including a garage, private residence, art gallery, cultural center, and office. The structure's two-and-a-half-story-tall façade is made of red brick and stone. The façade is decorated with stone quoins, horses' heads, and bulldog motifs. The interior was originally divided into stables on the first floor and coachmen's quarters on the second floor. Over the years, the interior has been modified into a two-and-a-half bedroom house with design features such as high ceilings and skylights.

The Socony–Mobil Building, also known as 150 East 42nd Street, is a 45-story, 572-foot-tall (174 m) skyscraper in the Murray Hill and East Midtown neighborhoods of Manhattan in New York City. It occupies the block bounded by 41st Street, 42nd Street, Lexington Avenue, and Third Avenue. The Socony–Mobil Building contains a three-story base with a primary entrance on 42nd Street, a secondary entrance on Lexington Avenue, and a basement that is visible along Third Avenue. Above the base is a 42-story tower that brings the structure to its maximum height; this is flanked to the west and east by wings that rise to the 13th story. The stories above the base are completely clad with stainless steel, comprising 7,000 panels. The structure was designed in two sections. The consultant John B. Peterkin designed the original plans to comply with the 1916 Zoning Resolution, while architects Harrison & Abramovitz became involved in 1952 and redesigned the structure in the International and Moderne styles. The Socony–Mobil Building was constructed between 1954 and 1956 as a speculative development by Peter B. Ruffin, who acquired a long-term lease from the site's owners, the Goelet family. Ruffin persuaded several tenants to move into 150 East 42nd Street, including the Socony–Mobil oil company, which occupied half the building upon its completion. The Socony–Mobil Building was renamed the Mobil Building in 1966 and was sold to Hiro Real Estate Company in 1987. After a series of renovations in the 1990s, it was sold to real estate investor David Werner in 2014. The building was designated a New York City landmark in 2003.

146 East 38th Street is a historic house located between Lexington and Third avenues in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Constructed from 1860 to 1861, it is one of the few intact Italianate brownstone rowhouses in Manhattan. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

On July 18, 2007, an explosion in Manhattan, New York City, sent a geyser of hot steam up from beneath a busy intersection, with a 40-story-high shower of mud and flying debris raining down on the crowded streets of Midtown Manhattan. It was caused by the failure of an 83-year-old, 24-inch (0.61 m) underground steam pipe near Grand Central Terminal, which exploded during the evening rush hour. 45 people were injured, and one woman died of a heart attack while fleeing. Initial fears that the cause was related to terrorism were quickly allayed by statements by mayor Michael Bloomberg and other officials shortly after the event.

The Murray Hill Theatre was a Broadway theatre located on Lexington Avenue between East 41st and 42nd streets in Manhattan, New York City. It operated as a legitimate theatre for plays, musicals, and operas until it became a part of the Columbia Amusement Company's chain of burlesque theaters in 1908. The theatre was acquired by the motion picture empire of Marcus Loew, and re-opened as a movie theatre, Loew's 42nd Street Theatre, in 1917. It continued to operate as a movie theatre until it was demolished in 1951.

The Westin New York Grand Central is a 40-story, 800-room business-oriented hotel approximately two blocks west of the United Nations headquarters and a little more than one block east of Grand Central Terminal in New York City, New York.

The 42nd Street station was an elevated express station on the demolished IRT Third Avenue Line in Manhattan, New York City. It had two levels with the lower level (built first) having three tracks. The main line tracks were served by two side platforms. A side platform connected to the southbound platform was used for shuttle service to Grand Central. The upper level was built as part of the Dual Contracts, and had one track and two side platforms over the two local tracks.

The Chanin Building ( CHAN-in), also known as 122 East 42nd Street, is a 56-story office skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. It is on the southwest corner of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, near Grand Central Terminal to the north and adjacent to 110 East 42nd Street to the west. The building is named for Irwin S. Chanin, its developer. The structure was designed in the Art Deco style by John Sloan and T. Markoe Robertson of the firm Sloan & Robertson, with the assistance of Chanin's architect Jacques Delamarre. It incorporates architectural sculpture by Rene Paul Chambellan, as well as a facade of brick and terracotta. The skyscraper reaches 680 feet (210 m), with a 649-foot-tall (198 m) roof topped by a 31-foot (9.4 m) spire. The Chanin Building includes numerous setbacks to conform with the 1916 Zoning Resolution. The Chanin Building was constructed in 1927–1929 on the site of a warehouse, one of the last remaining undeveloped sites around Grand Central Terminal. Upon opening, the building was almost fully rented, and it was the third-tallest building in New York City. Over the years, the upper floors have contained a movie theater, observation deck, and radio broadcast station, while the lower floors were used as offices and a bus terminal. The building was designated a New York City landmark in 1978, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
