Lex Street massacre

Mill Creek is a neighborhood in the West Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It sits between 44th and 52nd Streets north of Market Street and south of Girard Avenue. It is named for the eponymous creek which was buried in a pipe in the 19th century. In 1961, the sewer collapsed, taking homes with it. The neighborhood was formerly home to Mill Creek Apartments, a public housing project designed by Louis Kahn in the early 1950s. Its three 17-story highrise project towers were demolished in 2002 and replaced with suburban-style low-rise houses, a development named Lucien Blackwell Homes after the congressman.Mill Creek was the site of the 2000 "Lex Street Massacre," in which four men killed seven others and wounded three in retaliation for damage to a car, Philadelphia's worst killing spree in modern history. The Rudolph Blankenburg School, the Mayer Sulzberger Junior High School, and Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Parkway West High School is a public magnet high school located in the Mill Creek neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It shares a site with the Middle Years Alternative School for the Humanities (MYA). Both schools are part of the School District of Philadelphia. The schools are located in the former Mayer Sulzberger Junior High School building. It was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1923–1924. It is a three-story, 17 bay, brick building on a raised stone basement in the Colonial Revival-style. It is in the shape of a shallow "W". It features a center projecting pavilion, brick pilasters with stone caps, stone cornice, and a brick parapet. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.In 2008, the school district voted to close the Sulzberger Middle School due to declining enrollment. Additionally, Parkway West and MYA were moved from an older, deteriorating building to the Sulzberger building. Both schools were moved in by 2009.History Parkway West began in 1970 as the Gamma Campus of the Parkway Program which was a school without walls program. Parkway Gamma was located at 3833 Walnut Street in the University City section of West Philadelphia. In the early 2000s, Parkway Gamma changed its name to Parkway West and relocated to the former West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys located at 49th and Chestnut Streets in West Philadelphia also. They had shared the facilities with MYA until relocating to their current location.

Haverford North is a neighborhood in the West Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located north of Haverford Avenue, east of 44th Street, south and west of Lancaster Avenue, and west of 40th Street. The neighborhood borders Mantua, Dunlap, and Powelton Village according to Google Maps.

Rudolph Blankenburg School is a historic school located in the Mill Creek neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is part of the School District of Philadelphia. It is named in honor of Rudolph Blankenburg, who was mayor of Philadelphia between 1911 and 1915. The building was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1923–1925. It is a three-story, nine bay by five bay, brick building on a raised basement in the Colonial Revival style. It features large stone arch surrounds on the first level, a projecting entrance pavilion, a double stone cornice, and brick parapet topped by stone coping.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Belmont Charter School is a historic school building located in the Belmont neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The building was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1927. It is a three-story, brick building on a raised basement in the Late Gothic Revival-style. It features a two-story, projecting stone bay window over the main entrance. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Since 2002, the school has been used as a charter school run by the Community Education Alliance of West Philadelphia.

Belmont District is a defunct district that existed briefly in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. The district was created on 14 April 1853 from northern Blockley Township ceased to exist and on 2 February 1854 and was incorporated into the City of Philadelphia following the passage of the Act of Consolidation, 1854. The name Belmont is still used as a neighborhood name for the area, although it no longer refers to any legal entity. Similar name-inheritance (where the name of a former municipality lives on as a neighborhood name without formal definition) is also seen in other Philadelphia neighborhoods.

The Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital, also known as Kirkbride's Hospital or the Pennsylvania Hospital for Mental and Nervous Diseases, was a psychiatric hospital located at 48th and Haverford Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. It operated from its founding in 1841 until 1997. The remaining building, now called the Kirkbride Center is now part of the Blackwell Human Services Campus. Two large hospital structures and an elaborate pleasure ground were built on a campus that stretched along the north side of Market Street, from 45th to 49th Streets. Thomas Story Kirkbride, the hospital's first superintendent and physician-in-chief, developed a more humane method of treatment for the mentally ill there, that became widely influential. The hospital's plan became a prototype for a generation of institutions for the treatment of the mentally ill nationwide. The surviving 1859 building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.

The Drexel Dragons are the athletic teams of Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school's athletic program includes eighteen NCAA Division I sports including nine men's and nine women's teams, with most sports teams competing in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Drexel's athletic department was ranked first in gender equity by U.S. News. Parkside is a neighborhood in the West Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Much of the Parkside neighborhood was built during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. It is a National Register of Historic Places Historic District with many examples of Victorian architecture, some well-preserved, others in poor condition. The neighborhood was populated by German Americans, followed by Eastern European Jews, before becoming heavily African American after World War II. (Directly after World War II it was home to many displaced persons from Eastern Europe, which included Latvians.) In 2008, a shopping mall called the Park West Town Village Shopping Center was completed. Its anchor stores are Shop Rite, Lowe's, McDonald's, and CW Price. It is located on North 52nd Street. Parkside is the home of the Evans Recreation Center. In 2014, the Philly Pumptrack opened at Evans.Parkside was the early home of gangsta rapper Schoolly D, and was referenced in his songs "PSK" (Park Side Killers) and "Parkside 5-2".

West Philadelphia, nicknamed West Philly, is a section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Though there is no official definition of its boundaries, it is generally considered to reach from the western shore of the Schuylkill River, to City Avenue to the northwest, Cobbs Creek to the southwest, and the SEPTA Media/Wawa Line to the south. An alternate definition includes all city land west of the Schuylkill; this would also include Southwest Philadelphia and its neighborhoods. The eastern side of West Philadelphia is also known as University City.

46th Street station is an elevated SEPTA rapid transit station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located above the intersection of Farragut, 46th, and Market Streets in the Mill Creek and Walnut Hill neighborhoods of West Philadelphia, and serves the Market-Frankford Line. The station is also served by SEPTA bus routes 31 and 64.

The Philadelphia Arena was an auditorium used mainly for sporting events located at 46th and Market Streets in West Philadelphia. The address of the building, originally named the Philadelphia Ice Palace and Auditorium, was 4530 Market Street. The building stood next to what would become the WFIL TV studio that broadcast American Bandstand. It was built by George F. Pawling, of George F. Pawling & Co., Engineers and Contractors, and opened on Saturday, February 14, 1920 with a college hockey game between Yale and Princeton Tigers; the Bulldogs won, 4–0, before a crowd of over 4,000 despite the fact that the arena had only one small entrance at the time. One of the first teams to make the Arena home was the Yale University men's ice hockey team. Yale did not have a suitable on-campus venue in 1920 and played home games in Philadelphia. During the 1920–1921 season, Yale, Princeton, and Penn made the Arena their home ice.
