46th Street station (SEPTA)

The Philadelphia Arena was an auditorium used mainly for sporting events located at 46th and Market Streets in West Philadelphia. The address of the building, originally named the Philadelphia Ice Palace and Auditorium, was 4530 Market Street. The building stood next to what would become the WFIL TV studio that broadcast American Bandstand. It was built by George F. Pawling, of George F. Pawling & Co., Engineers and Contractors, and opened on Saturday, February 14, 1920 with a college hockey game between Yale and Princeton Tigers; the Bulldogs won, 4–0, before a crowd of over 4,000 despite the fact that the arena had only one small entrance at the time. One of the first teams to make the Arena home was the Yale University men's ice hockey team. Yale did not have a suitable on-campus venue in 1920 and played home games in Philadelphia. During the 1920–1921 season, Yale, Princeton, and Penn made the Arena their home ice.

West Catholic Preparatory High School is a co-educational Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 45th and Chestnut Streets, the University City neighborhood of West Philadelphia.

Breslyn Apartments is a historic apartment complex located in the Spruce Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1913, and consists of five three-story, brick and granite buildings with terra cotta and galvanized-iron trim in the Beaux Arts-style. Each building measures 38 feet wide and 98 feet deep. The buildings features large open porch-balconies with Ionic order columns, segmental-arch windows, bow and bay windows, and terra cotta piers with Corinthian order caps.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital, also known as Kirkbride's Hospital or the Pennsylvania Hospital for Mental and Nervous Diseases, was a psychiatric hospital located at 48th and Haverford Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. It operated from its founding in 1841 until 1997. The remaining building, now called the Kirkbride Center is now part of the Blackwell Human Services Campus. Two large hospital structures and an elaborate pleasure ground were built on a campus that stretched along the north side of Market Street, from 45th to 49th Streets. Thomas Story Kirkbride, the hospital's first superintendent and physician-in-chief, developed a more humane method of treatment for the mentally ill there, that became widely influential. The hospital's plan became a prototype for a generation of institutions for the treatment of the mentally ill nationwide. The surviving 1859 building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.

Henry C. Lea Elementary School is a historic elementary school located in the Walnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is part of the School District of Philadelphia. The building was designed by Henry deCourcy Richards and built by Cramp & Co. in 1914. It is a three-story, five bay, reinforced concrete building faced with brick and with terra cotta and granite trim in the Late Gothic Revival-style. It sits on a raised basement. It features a Classical limestone center entrance surround, a central two-story bay window, decorative panels, crenelated parapet, and a projecting entrance bay. It was used as an "observation school" for teacher education and training.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 as the Henry C. Lea School of Practice.

West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys (West Boys, West Catholic, Burrs) was founded in 1916. A school building was later constructed at 49th Street between Chestnut and Market Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school closed its doors in 1989 when the co-educational West Philadelphia Catholic High School opened in the former West Philadelphia Catholic Girls High School building at 45th and Chestnut Street.

Walnut Hill is a neighborhood in the West Philadelphia section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is located between 45th Street and 52nd Street, bounded by Market Street and Spruce Street. Most of the neighborhood is in the northwestern part of the University City District. It is located north of the neighborhoods of Garden Court and Spruce Hill. It is a racially mixed neighborhood with a large seasonal student population. Walnut Hill was largely built from the start of the 20th century through the 1940s, with a large growth spurt immediately following the construction of what is now the SEPTA Market-Frankford Line. The primarily residential neighborhood consists of 2 and 3-story rowhomes, with several pre-war garden style apartments. West Philadelphia High School is located in Walnut Hill and The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College is close by, if not technically within the boundaries of the neighborhood. In recent years, the Enterprise Center Community Development Corporation, in collaboration with the Walnut Hill Community Association, has made strides to spur development in the neighborhood. The La Blanche Apartments and Henry C. Lea School of Practice are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.American Bandstand was first broadcast from the ABC studio at 46th and Market Streets (now the Enterprise Center).Science fiction author Isaac Asimov lived at Wyngate Hall (now called The Terrace), a garden apartment building at 50th and Spruce, from 1942–1945, and wrote several of the stories that comprise I, Robot and the Foundation series while living there.Singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson lived with his sister at 50th and Walnut from 1968 until his death in 1976. A mural at 45th and Chestnut commemorates Robeson.From the 1930s through the 1970s the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) was located at 48th and Spruce, their former building now houses the Emmanual Church, a Korean language Presbyterian congregation.

Spruce Hill is a neighborhood in the University City section of West Philadelphia. It is between 40th and 46th streets, and it stretches from Market Street south to Woodland Avenue. With a population of over 16,000, it is a racially and ethnically diverse part of the city where much historic architecture is preserved. The neighborhood contains a large number of Victorian rowhouses, many of which have been converted to multi-family apartments.It was built as a streetcar suburb for Center City between 1850 and 1910. Among its most prominent developers was financier Clarence Howard Clark Sr. (1833 – 1906), who built dozens of rowhouses, donated land for the Walnut Street West Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, settled a tax assessment by founding the 9.1-acre Clark Park, and established his mansion on the grassy block that today holds the Penn Alexander public elementary school. A statue of Charles Dickens, cast in 1890 by Francis Edwin Elwell, stands in Clark Park; it is one of just two known statues of the author.

Parkway West High School is a public magnet high school located in the Mill Creek neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It shares a site with the Middle Years Alternative School for the Humanities (MYA). Both schools are part of the School District of Philadelphia. The schools are located in the former Mayer Sulzberger Junior High School building. It was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1923–1924. It is a three-story, 17 bay, brick building on a raised stone basement in the Colonial Revival-style. It is in the shape of a shallow "W". It features a center projecting pavilion, brick pilasters with stone caps, stone cornice, and a brick parapet. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.In 2008, the school district voted to close the Sulzberger Middle School due to declining enrollment. Additionally, Parkway West and MYA were moved from an older, deteriorating building to the Sulzberger building. Both schools were moved in by 2009.History Parkway West began in 1970 as the Gamma Campus of the Parkway Program which was a school without walls program. Parkway Gamma was located at 3833 Walnut Street in the University City section of West Philadelphia. In the early 2000s, Parkway Gamma changed its name to Parkway West and relocated to the former West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys located at 49th and Chestnut Streets in West Philadelphia also. They had shared the facilities with MYA until relocating to their current location.

Pinehurst Apartments, also known as Pine Street Place and Pine Terrace, is a historic apartment complex located in the Spruce Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1914, and consists of two 3 1/2-story, reinforced concrete buildings faced in brick and granite. The buildings feature colonnaded porches with Corinthian order columns.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
