Burton Constable Hall

Burton Constable is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is located approximately 9 miles (14 km) north-east of Hull city centre and 3 miles (5 km) south-east of the village of Skirlaugh. The civil parish is formed by the village of Burton Constable and the hamlets of Marton and West Newton. According to the 2011 UK census, Burton Constable parish had a population of 127, an increase on the 2001 UK census figure of 120.It is the site of the Grade I listed Burton Constable Hall.Burton Constable was served from 1864 to 1964 by Burton Constable railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway.Marmaduke Tunstall, the eighteenth-century ornithologist, was born in the village.

West Newton is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 9 miles (14 km) north-east of Hull city centre and 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Hornsea. In 1935, both the townships of Marton and West Newton were merged into the civil parish of Burton Constable.

Sproatley is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) north-east of Hull city centre and 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Hedon at the junction of the B1238 and B1240 roads. The village church, dedicated to St. Swithin, is said to contain a small chamber organ built by 'Father' Smith in the late 17th, early 18th century. The church was designated a Grade II listed building in 1987. According to the 2011 UK census, Sproatley parish had a population of 1,350, a decrease on the 2001 UK census figure of 1,353.

Marton is a hamlet in the civil parish of Burton Constable, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, and in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Kingston upon Hull city centre and 2 miles (3.2 km) east of the village of Skirlaugh and the A165 road. Marton was formerly a township in the parish of Swine, in 1866 Marton became a separate civil parish, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Burton Constable. In 1931 the parish had a population of 73.In 1823 Marton was in the Wapentake and Liberty of Holderness. A Catholic chapel was the only place of worship. Population at the time was 129, with occupations including nine farmers and a shoemaker. A carrier, who was also a Licensed victualler, operated between the village and Hull twice weekly.Marton was served from 1864 to 1964 by Burton Constable railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway.To the south-east of the settlement is the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Sacrament which is a Grade II listed building.

Thirtleby is a hamlet in the civil parish of Coniston, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) north-east of Hull city centre and 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the village of Sproatley. Thirtleby was formerly a township in the parish of Swine, in 1866 Thirtleby became a separate civil parish, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Coniston. In 1931 the parish had a population of 55.

Old Ellerby is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in an area known as Holderness. It is situated approximately 7 miles (11 km) north-east of Hull city centre and 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Skirlaugh, lying to the east of the A165 road. Together with its neighbour New Ellerby it forms the civil parish of Ellerby. In 1823 Ellerby was in the civil parish of Swine, and the Wapentake and Liberty of Holderness. Population at the time, including the then settlements of Dowthorp, Langthorp and Owbrough, was 233. Occupations included five farmers, a blacksmith, a wheelwright, a shoemaker, and the landlord of The Board public house, and a further farmer at Dowthorp.Old Ellerby was served from 1864 to 1902 by Ellerby railway station on the Hull and Hornsea Railway.

Holderness was a local government district and borough in northern England, named after the Holderness peninsula. It was formed on 1 April 1974 along with the non-metropolitan county of Humberside in which it was situated. It was formed from part of the administrative county of Yorkshire, East Riding, namely: The municipal borough of Hedon, The urban districts of Hornsea and Withernsea, The Holderness Rural District.On 1 April 1996, Humberside and the borough were abolished, and it became part of the new unitary East Riding of Yorkshire.

Holderness is an area of the East Riding of Yorkshire, on the north-east coast of England. An area of rich agricultural land, Holderness was marshland until it was drained in the Middle Ages. Topographically, Holderness has more in common with the Netherlands than with other parts of Yorkshire. To the north and west are the Yorkshire Wolds. Holderness generally refers to the area between the River Hull and the North Sea. The Prime Meridian passes through Holderness just to the east of Patrington and through Tunstall to the north. Between 1974 and 1996, Holderness lay within the Borough of Holderness in Humberside. It gave its name to a wapentake until the 19th century, when its functions were replaced by other local government bodies, particularly after the Local Government Act 1888. The city of Kingston upon Hull lies in the south-west corner of Holderness and Bridlington borders the north-east but both are usually considered separately. The main towns include Withernsea, Hornsea and Hedon. The Holderness coast stretches from Flamborough Head to Spurn Head. The ancient market town of Beverley lies just to the west of the Holderness area, on the eastern slopes of the Yorkshire Wolds. Because of its soft soil, the coastline is vulnerable to erosion, on average losing six feet (1.8 m) a year. The coast and surrounding communities have had to implement managed retreat.

Holderness was a wapentake of the historic East Riding of Yorkshire, England consisting of the south-easterly part of the county. Established in medieval times, it ceased to have much significance in the 19th century when the wapentakes were superseded by other administrative divisions for most local government purposes. Because of its large area it was sub-divided into three divisions—North Division, Middle Division and South Division.

Withernwick is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 10 miles (16 km) north-east of Hull city centre and 5 miles (8 km) south of Hornsea. According to the 2011 UK census, Withernwick parish had a population of 453, a reduction on the 2001 UK census figure of 474. The parish church of St Alban is a Grade II listed building.Over the past few years the village has been in decline, having lost its post office, school, Methodist chapel and village hall.

Wyton is a hamlet in the civil parish of Bilton, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, It is situated approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Kingston upon Hull city centre. Wyton leads from Bilton through to Sproatley. Wyton was formerly a township in the parish of Swine, in 1866 Wyton became a separate civil parish, on 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Bilton. In 1931 the parish had a population of 111.Wyton is a small farming village with few houses, it is used for farming because of its rich soil, and large, open space. Its history is small, but was a Quaker village in the 17th century. There are still signs of the Quakers, such as buried ploughing machines, buried clothes and the remains of the houses (more on the Sproatley track, leading from Sproatley to Coniston). Wyton contains a Grade II listed Wesleyan Methodist Church, a milestone and a hall but there are no schools, public houses, post offices, hotels, public telephones or sports centres. Wyton is usually called a hamlet because it is even smaller than a village.

Burton Constable railway station was a railway station which served the villages of Marton and Burton Constable in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was on the Hull and Hornsea Railway. It opened on 28 March 1864 as "Marton", but was renamed "Burton Constable" on 1 August 1864, to avoid confusion with various other Martons elsewhere. It was renamed again (to avoid confusion with Constable Burton on the Wensleydale Railway), on 1 January 1922 and became known as "Ellerby". It closed following the Beeching Report on 19 October 1964.
