Gmina Godów

Godów [ˈɡɔduf] is a village and the seat of Gmina Godów, Wodzisław County, Silesian Voivodeship, southern Poland. It lies near the border with the Czech Republic. The Olza River (German: Olsa) flows through the village's southern outskirts. It lies approximately 12 kilometres (7 mi) south of Wodzisław Śląski. Although it does not lie within the historical borders of Cieszyn Silesia, it is a part of Euroregion Cieszyn Silesia. Polish actor Franciszek Pieczka was born here.

It begins in vicinity of Cieszyn (Pastwiska) and then flows north through Hażlach, Kończyce Wielkie, Kończyce Małe, Zebrzydowice, where it veers west towards Marklowice Górne, Dolní Marklovice, Petrovice u Karviné and Závada.

It is approximately 4 kilometres (2 mi) north of Godów, 5 km (3 mi) south of Wodzisław Śląski, and 50 km (31 mi) south-west of the regional capital Katowice.

Gołkowice [ɡɔu̯kɔˈvit͡sɛ] is a village in Gmina Godów, Wodzisław County, Silesian Voivodeship, southern Poland. It lies on the border with the Czech Republic. The village was first mentioned in the document of Pope Gregory IX issued on 26 May 1229 among villages belonging to Benedictine abbey in Tyniec, as Golkowice. Benedictine abbey in Orlová (established in 1268) in the late 13th century had rights to revenues from three villages in the Castellany of Racibórz, namely Gorzyce, Uchylsko and Gołkowice.There is a wooden Saint Anne Church from 1878 in the village.

It was first mentioned in 1447 and was a separate municipality, but became administratively a part of Dětmarovice in years 1872–1875. The 1 Maja coal mine (Coal Mine 1st May; pol. Kopalnia Węgla Kamiennego 1 Maja) was a large mine in the south of Poland in Wodzisław Śląski, Silesian Voivodeship, 260 km south-west of the capital, Warsaw. Built in 1960, it was called "Mszana". Since 1961 it was called 1 Maja (1 May), in honor of International Workers' Day. It was one of the most modern and best coal mines in the Polish People's Republic. It was combined with Marcel Coal Mine in 1995. It closed in 2001. The coal mine covered 35.6 square kilometers, and coal production was around 8,400 tons per day.Coal Mine 1 May was the general sponsor of the Polish football team Odra Wodzisław Śląski until the Mine's closure.
