Josefstadt (German pronunciation: [ˈjoːzɛfˌʃtat] (listen); Central Bavarian: Josefstod) is the eighth district of Vienna (German: 8. Bezirk, Josefstadt). It is near the center of Vienna and was established as a district in 1850, but borders changed later. Josefstadt is a heavily populated urban area with many workers and residential homes. It has a population of 24,279 people (2014). With an area of 1.08 km² (.42 sq.mi.), Josefstadt is the smallest district in Vienna, and was named after the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I. It consists of the former Vorstädte of Josefstadt, Breitenfeld, Strozzigrund, and Alt-Lerchenfeld, as well as parts of St. Ulrich and Alservorstadt. The district borders are formed by Alser Straße (north), Lerchenfelderstraße (south), Hernalsergürtel and Lerchenfeldergürtel in the west, and Auerspergstraße and Landesgerichtsstraße in the east. Josefstadt has developed into a middle-class neighbourhood. Most mayors of Vienna have lived here, as does Austria's former president. Due to its proximity to the University of Vienna, Josefstadt is also the home of many students. On the basis of the 2005 municipal elections, Josefstadt became Vienna's second district ever (after Neubau) to have a Green district director.

The k.k. Civil-Mädchen-Pensionat Wien was a women's teacher's college in Vienna, Austria, between 1786 and 1919. The school was founded in 1786 by Madame Luzac on permission by Emperor Joseph II, with the purpose of educating girls from the middle classes to professional teachers. It was a pioneer institution in Austria for its time.

Palais Strozzi is a palace in Vienna, Austria. It was owned by the Strozzi family. The palace is located in the VIII. district of Vienna Josefstadt, was built between 1699 and 1702 for Countess Maria Katharina Strozzi, née Khevenhüller. Today the finance offices for the VIII., XVI. and XVII. districts are located there.

The Theater in der Josefstadt is a theater in Vienna in the eighth district of Josefstadt. It was founded in 1788 and is the oldest still performing theater in Vienna. It is often referred to colloquially as simply Die Josefstadt. Following remodeling and rebuilding in 1822 — celebrated by the performance of the overture Die Weihe des Hauses ('Consecration of the House') by Beethoven — opera was staged there including Meyerbeer and Wagner. From 1858 onwards the theatre gave up opera and instead concentrated on straight theatre and comedy.

Neudeggergasse Synagogue (German: Synagoge Neudeggergasse) was a Jewish synagogue in Vienna, Austria.1 The synagogue served the Jewish community of the VII. and VIII. Districts (Neubau and Josefstadt). It was commissioned by Baron Moritz von Königswarter, and the architect was Max Fleischer. The synagogue was built in the North-German Neo-Gothic style. It was mostly constructed of brick, including the façade and the two towers. The main hall was divided by pillars into three naves; more than 300 people could sit on the ground level. As in many synagogues, the women sat separate from the men and could watch the proceedings from the balcony on the second floor. The synagogue apparently had excellent acoustics. The synagogue was destroyed during the Reichskristallnacht pogroms in 1938, after the Anschluß of Austria to Nazi Germany. During the construction of new buildings for housing in 1998, parts of the previous façade were rebuilt in vinyl, but the owner of the house at Neudeggergasse 10 did not want a complete reconstruction.

The Hotel Graf Stadion is a historic three-star hotel, located on Buchfeldgasse 5 in Vienna's eighth district Josefstadt. The hotel was established in 1897 and named after the Austrian statesman Johann Philipp von Stadion. The building is a protected historic landmark listed on the Austrian cultural property list.
