The house was built about 1822, and is a two-story, three-bay, Federal style frame dwelling. It is sheathed in weatherboard and has a full-width, one-story shed roofed porch. The house was designated a post office in 1822. Also on the property are the contributing log smokehouse, large barn (c. 1898), "lighthouse" or Delco house (c. 1917), corn crib (c. 1917), gear house (c. 1917), woodhouse (c. 1917), spring house, mill site, shop, and plantation office.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Jacob Phifer House was built in the 1850s, and is a two-story, rectangular, weatherboarded log dwelling. The oldest building is the John Phifer House, built about 1819, and is a small two-story log dwelling. Other contributing resources are the double-pen log barn (c. 1858), tool shed (1930s), garage (1920s / 1930s), granary and corn crib (c. 1858), spring house (c. 1930), blacksmith shop (c. 1925), two chicken houses (1930s, c. 1940), log chicken coop (1930s), wood shed (c. 1930), smokehouse (c. 1858), privy (c. 1930), scalding vat (c. 1935), log tobacco barn (c. 1895), and the farm landscape.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Residents are served by the Rowan–Salisbury School System and the township is home to Mt Ulla Elementary School.

R.A. Clement School is a historic school located at Cleveland, Rowan County, North Carolina. The H-shaped brick building was built in 1929 as a Rosenwald school. Rufus Alexander Clement, born a slave in 1847, helped to get the school built along with his wife Emma. Four teachers taught African-American students in eleven grades. For the twelfth grade students went to J. C. Price High School in Salisbury. The school closed in 1968, after which a group later known as West Rowan Neighborhood Center Advisory Council bought the building and made it a community center. Eventually, the advisory council could not keep the property, which stood empty until 2003 when the alumni association purchased it and started renovations.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places January 10, 2019.

The complex includes the 1826-1827 gable-front vernacular Gothic Revival- and American Craftsman-style brick veneered, heavy timber frame chapel; a 1926 Craftsman-style parish house attached to the original building by an open brick arcaded breezeway; and a historic cemetery.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

It has a one-story rear ell and a one-story shed roofed rear porch. Its builder James Graham also built the Robert Knox House and the Hall Family House. Adjacent to the church is the contributing cemetery with 53 inscribed markers. It is the oldest intact frame antebellum Episcopal church in North Carolina. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
