Lyle is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Klickitat County, Washington, United States. The population was 499 at the 2010 census.

Mayer State Park is a state park in the Columbia River Gorge, near Rowena, Oregon in Wasco County in the U.S. state of Oregon. It consists of several disjointed parcels of transected by Interstate 84 and the tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad. The south-easternmost parcel includes the Rowena Loops, a series of horseshoe curves by which the Historic Columbia River Highway (U.S. Route 30) climbs to the Rowena Crest, where there is an overlook, from the community of Rowena.

Rowena is located west of The Dalles on the Columbia River, where the river passes through the natural feature Rowena Gap. Interstate 84 (Columbia River Highway) and U.S. Route 30 (Historic Columbia River Highway) pass through the community. Route 30 near Rowena is notable for the Rowena Loops.The origin of the name "Rowena" is disputed. Two sources say Rowena was named for H.S. Rowe, a railroad company official, in the early 1880s. Another source says it was named for a girl, Rowena, who had been living in the area at the time the community was founded. It is also possible that the name comes indirectly from Rowena, Ivanhoe's lover in the novel of the same name by Sir Walter Scott.There was once a ferry operating between Rowena and Lyle, Washington, across the Columbia.The Nature Conservancy has a nature reserve on the plateau near Rowena, the Tom McCall Preserve, known for its spring wildflowers. The preserve is owned and managed in co-operation with Mayer State Park.

Ortley is a former town in Wasco County, Oregon, in the United States. It was about 1 mile (2 km) south of Rowena and about 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Mosier; the site is now on private land and no evidence of the townsite exists today. It is still classed as a populated place by the USGS.

Memaloose State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Oregon, 11 miles west of The Dalles and accessible via Interstate 84. Memaloose Island to the north is visible from the state park. Victor Trevitt, an early member of the Oregon Legislative Assembly, was buried on the island after his death in 1883; his grave marker is visible on the southern shore of the island.

Doug's Beach State Park is a public recreation area in the Columbia River Gorge lying three miles (4.8 km) east of Lyle in Klickitat County, Washington. The state park occupies 379 acres (153 ha) along Washington State Route 14 at one of the premier windsurfing sites on the Columbia River. The park also offers picnicking, fishing, and swimming.

The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum is the official interpretive center and history museum about the Columbia River Gorge located on 54 acres (22 ha) in The Dalles, Oregon. Opened in 1997, the 48,200-square-foot (4,480 m2) Center features exhibits about the area's geology, Ice Age prehistory, Native American culture and basketry, exploration by Lewis and Clark and others on the Oregon Trail, settlement, transportation and natural history. The Wasco County Historical Museum is a 17,200 square-foot exhibit wing which tells the history of the people of Wasco County, Oregon. The center also offers live raptor programs, a research library, meeting rooms, auditorium, gift shop and cafe. The site includes a handicap accessible paved interpretive trail with vistas of the Columbia River Gorge and the Klickitat Hills.

Chenoweth is an unincorporated community in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. Locally the alternative spelling of Chenowith is used, such as for the 'Chenowith Elementary School'. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Chenoweth as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name. The population of the CDP was 3,412 at the 2000 census.

The Jefferson Mosier House is a historic house in Mosier, Oregon, United States. Jefferson N. Mosier (1860–1928) first platted the town in 1902 on what had been his father's donation land claim, and tirelessly promoted it for decades after. He built this prominent house in 1904, and remained in residence until his death. It is the only Queen Anne building in Mosier, and features many signature characteristics of the type.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. By 2006, it had been converted for use as a bed and breakfast inn.

On June 3, 2016, a Union Pacific train with 96 tank cars carrying Bakken oil from New Town, North Dakota to U.S. Oil and Refining in Tacoma, Washington derailed in the Columbia River Gorge near Mosier, Oregon. Sixteen of the 96 cars derailed after the train's emergency brake system about 18 cars back from the engines engaged - several cars then caught fire. By 5pm large explosions were coming from the tankers. All of the tank cars were modern CPC-1232 design.Interstate 84 in Oregon was closed, with Washington State Route 14 being recommended as a detour. Washington Department of Ecology, US Coast Guard, Federal Railroad Administration, and Portland Airport's specialty airport fire tender carrying 1,300 U.S. gallons (4,900 L) of firefighting foam were among the 20 agencies that responded. As of 4:30pm firefighters were allowing the fire to burn the oil, simply monitoring it. Mosier residents were evacuated and the sewage treatment plant was shut down. An oil sheen was seen on the Columbia River by the following morning. Two days after the crash residents were allowed to return to their homes, and freight trains were running on the tracks, to the strong objection of the community. The community then passed an emergency motion asking Union Pacific to remove all oil from the damaged cars before resuming use of the tracks. Union Pacific pushed the damaged cars out of the way and limited the train speed to 10 miles per hour (16 km/h) in the section.42,000 US gallons (160,000 l) of oil were spilled. Much of it was consumed by fire, some went into the Columbia River, and 10,000 US gallons (38,000 l) were recovered from the city's sewage treatment plant.

Eighteenmile Island is a 9.89 acre (4 ha) island on the Oregon side of the Columbia River at river mile 174 in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. It is about a half mile (0.8 km) downstream of Mosier, Oregon and four miles (6.4 km) upstream of Hood River. It can be seen from Interstate 84, which runs along the Oregon side of the Columbia River, and from the Historic Columbia River Highway. A small rocky "island" downstream of Eighteenmile Island houses a navigational light. The island is mentioned in the journal of Meriwether Lewis, from the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
