Bertram, Iowa

The Bertram Bridge, also known as the Ely Street Bridge, was a historic structure located near the town of Bertram in rural Linn County, Iowa, United States. The metal 5-panel pinned Pratt through truss bridge was built in 1891. It was designed by the J.E. Jayne and Son Bridge Company of Iowa City. The bridge had two main spans and two approach spans. The whole structure was 208 feet (63 m) and the roadway was 13.5 feet (4 m) wide. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 as a part of the Highway Bridges of Iowa MPS.Bertram Bridge was destroyed by flood waters from Big Creek on June 29, 2014, and was removed from the National Register later that year.

The Indian Creek Bridge is a wrought iron bridge, built about 1880 to the east of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The bridge crosses a tributary of the Cedar River in Linn County. It was designed and built by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company (WIBCO) of Canton, Ohio as an eight-panel pin-connected through truss in an unusual double-intersection Pratt design.The overall span measures 115 feet (35 m), carrying a 15.58-foot (4.75 m) wide roadway. Including the approach spans, the bridge has a total length of 191 feet (58 m). The bridge rests on stone piers and abutments, with timber pile piers and abutments supporting the timber stringer approach spans. The bridge deck is timber, laid perpendicular to the span. The bridge features decorative cresting and lattice lateral bracing. The truss uses rigid horizontal and vertical members and rod bracing for the diagonals.The Indian Creek Bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 15, 1998.

Palisades-Kepler State Park is a 840-acre (340 ha) state park in Linn County, Iowa, United States, near the city of Mount Vernon. The park is located in a forested area on the bank of the Cedar River marked by bluffs and ravines. While the state created the park in 1922, it was greatly expanded in 1928 through the estate of Louis H. Kepler and further developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The park includes 5 miles (8.0 km) of hiking trails from which visitors can view local flora and fauna, including white-tailed deer, turkeys, black maple trees, and wildflowers in springtime. It also features a swimming beach, a boat ramp, and fishing sites on the river; fish living in the river include bass, channel catfish, and walleye. The park has 45 electric and non-electric campsites and four cabins along with a CCC-built lodge for day use.

Beach School is a historic building located northwest of Mount Vernon, Iowa, United States. Because school district lines had been redrawn, students in this area were forced to attend classes in a building some distance away. Given the condition of rural roads in the late 19th century, that created a hardship for many families. From 1889 to 1891 the school district set aside funds for a new building, and Benjamin Beach donated land on his farm for the new school. Not only was his farmhouse nearby, but Beach also operated a sawmill along the creek east of the school and a gristmill across the road. The one-room schoolhouse was completed in 1892, and a bell was purchased for the building around 1901. Early drawings of the building show a small bell tower. The building was used for educational and social use until 1946, and it has subsequently been converted into a rental home. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Joseph and Clara Amanda H. Moorhead House is a historic building located east of Ely, Iowa, United States. Joseph was a native of Holmes County, Ohio and Clara was from Chemung County, New York. They settled in Putnam Township in 1855 with their two sons. The Moorhead daughters were born in Iowa. The family initially lived in a log house before the original part of this house was built in 1859. The house is the only known residential example of heavy timber-frame construction that remains in Linn County from its settlement period. This construction method was more common in barn construction. The house was originally a rectangular two-story structure with side gables. Additions and a wrap-around porch were added in later years. Two barns associated with the farm, no longer extant, were located across the road. The Moorheads lived here until 1881 when Joseph was elected the county auditor, and they moved into Marion. They retained ownership of the property until 1900. Clara died in Marion in 1901 and Joseph died two years later in Wichita, Kansas, where he lived with one of their daughters. They are buried nearby in the Rogers Grove Cemetery. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The historic Abbe Creek School is a one-room schoolhouse museum located one mile west of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, on E48. It is believed to be the oldest standing one room brick schoolhouse in Iowa. The school is located on land claimed by William Abbe, the first white settler in Linn County, Iowa.
