Bellevue Hill, Boston

Bellevue Standpipe is a historic water storage tank on Bellevue Hill at Washington Street and West Roxbury Parkway in the Stony Brook Reservation of Boston, Massachusetts. Built in 1914, it is one of three early 20th-century water tanks built as part of Greater Boston's public water supply. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

West Roxbury is a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts bordered by Roslindale to the northeast, the village of Chestnut Hill and the town of Brookline to the north, the city of Newton to the northwest, the towns of Dedham and Needham to the southwest, and Hyde Park to the southeast. West Roxbury is often mistakenly confused with Roxbury, but the two are separated from each other by Roslindale and Jamaica Plain. Before 1630, the area was inhabited by the Wampanoag Indian Tribe. Founded in 1630 (contemporaneously with Boston), West Roxbury was originally part of the town of Roxbury and was mainly used as farmland. West Roxbury seceded from Roxbury in 1851, and was annexed by Boston in 1874. The town included the neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain and Roslindale. West Roxbury's main commercial thoroughfare is Centre Street. West Roxbury Main Streets is a local non-profit that works to enhance and promote the business district. The neighborhood has some two-family houses but mostly single family homes; many of Boston's civil servants live there. West Roxbury is home to District E-5 of the Boston Police Department, Boston Emergency Medical Services Ambulance 5 that posts at the intersection of West Roxbury Parkway at Centre St and Paramedic 5 stationed at the Faulkner Hospital provide EMS service, and there are two Boston fire stations, Ladder 25 & Engine 30 on Centre Street and Engine 55 on Washington Street. The Needham Branch of the MBTA Commuter Rail network has three stations in West Roxbury (Bellevue, Highland and West Roxbury). Several MBTA bus lines run through and/or terminate in West Roxbury. A large Veterans Affairs hospital is located opposite the Charles River on the VFW Parkway near the Dedham line. West Roxbury is home to several places of worship, including three Catholic parishes, churches of various Protestant denominations, and a Jewish synagogue. The neighborhood was home to an experimental transcendentalist Utopian community called Brook Farm, which attracted notable figures including Margaret Fuller and Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose 1852 novel The Blithedale Romance is based on his stay there.Like its neighboring communities, West Roxbury's residential development grew with the construction of the West Roxbury branch of the Boston and Providence Railroad; the area grew further with the development of electric streetcars.

The Stony Brook Reservation Parkways are a group of historic parkways in Boston and Dedham, Massachusetts. They provide access to and within the Stony Brook Reservation, a Massachusetts state park. The roadways and the park are administered by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, a successor to the Metropolitan District Commission, which oversaw their construction. The roads consist of the Dedham, Enneking, and Turtle Pond Parkways and West Boundary Road. Two roads within the park, Smithfield Road and Reservation Road, are listed as non-contributing properties. The park roads were built between 1894 and 1956, and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Bellevue station is an MBTA Commuter Rail station in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Located in the Bellevue neighborhood, it serves the Needham Line. The station has a mini-high platform for accessibility. The Boston and Providence Railroad opened its West Roxbury Branch from Tollgate to Dedham on July 14, 1849, with Central (later called Bellevue) one of three intermediate stops. A new station building was constructed around 1891.

Holy Name Church in West Roxbury is a Roman Catholic church of the Archdiocese of Boston. Among the largest and most distinguished buildings in the western section of Boston, the imposing Romanesque Revival church dominates the rotary where it is located and provides an interesting contrast to the Gothic St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church, a mile down Centre Street. Holy Name Church is a relatively large church. It has 2 floors, and mass can be said on either, although the upper church is larger.

Stony Brook Reservation is a woodland park in Boston and Dedham, Massachusetts, a unit of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston, part of the state park system of Massachusetts. It was established in 1894 as one of the five original reservations created by the Metropolitan Park Commission. The park is served by the Stony Brook Reservation Parkways, a road system that was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

The Roxbury Latin School is a private boys' day school that was founded in 1645 in the town of Roxbury (now a neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts) by the Rev. John Eliot under a charter received from King Charles I of England. It bills itself as the "oldest independent school in continuous existence" in North America. The school's endowment is estimated at $189 million, the largest of any boys' day school in the United States.

Highland station is an MBTA Commuter Rail station in Boston, Massachusetts. It serves the Needham Line. It is located in the Bellevue Hill section of West Roxbury. The station has a mini-high platform for accessibility. The station originally opened around 1855 on the Boston and Providence Railroad's West Roxbury Branch. A stone station building, similar to one constructed at Mount Hope station the previous year, was built in 1885.The MBTA expanded the parking lot in the early 1990s.

Parkway is a section of the West Roxbury and Roslindale neighborhoods of Boston, Massachusetts. Parkway takes its name from the parkways that pass through West Roxbury, specifically West Roxbury Parkway (constructed 1919 - 1929) and VFW Parkway (constructed 1930 - 1942). Much of the land that makes up Parkway was once owned by the Weld family, as evidenced by Weld Street that runs through the area. As illustrated on the Boston Redevelopment Authority neighborhood map of 1967, Parkway is roughly bounded by (clockwise, from north) Allandale Street, the Arnold Arboretum, South Street, Washington Street, Corinth Street, Belgrade Avenue, West Roxbury Parkway, Centre Street, Church Street, and the Brookline, Massachusetts line.

Theodore Parker Unitarian Universalist Church is a historic church building at 1859 Centre Street in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Built in 1900 to a design by West Roxbury native Henry M. Seaver, it is a locally significant example of Normanesque architecture, and is adorned by stained glass windows created by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his firm. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. The congregation it houses was founded in 1712, and is named for the influential Transcendentalist and abolitionist Theodore Parker, who was the congregation's minister in the 1840s.

The Westerly Burial Ground (also known as Westerly Burying Ground) is an historic cemetery on Centre Street in the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Established in 1683, it is Boston's seventh-oldest cemetery, and where the first settlers of the West Roxbury area are buried. It was enlarged in 1832, and 1844, and its last documented burial was in 1962. Eight American Revolutionary War veterans are buried there as well as fifteen veterans of the American Civil War. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

West Roxbury station is an MBTA Commuter Rail station in Boston, Massachusetts, served by the Needham Line. It is located on an embankment above Lagrange Street in the West Roxbury neighborhood. The station is accessible with a short mini-high platform on the outbound end of the main platform.
