The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 28, 1990 for its significance in architecture, commerce, industry, and settlement pattern from 1762 to 1929. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 14, 1991 for its significance in architecture, entertainment/recreation, and health/medicine. The district includes 71 contributing buildings, such as the Oak Cottage, site of schoolhouse No. 5, Schooley's Mountain Store, the William W. Marsh House, Christadelphian Bible Camp, the former Heath House Hotel, former Forest Grove Hydropathic Institute, Mine Hill Farm, the Marsh Mine and several private residences and commercial buildings.

Schooley's Mountain is an unincorporated community located within Washington Township in Morris County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Named for the Schooley family who owned a considerable amount of land there in the 1790s, the community is on Schooley's Mountain, a mountain with an elevation of about 1,000 feet (300 m) directly north of Long Valley. Located about 45 miles (72 km) from New York City, the community is situated 600 feet (180 m) above the surrounding valley. It contains many housing developments and Schooley's Mountain Park, a recreational area with an overlook, a waterfall, and numerous hiking paths, as well as Lake George. In its past, Schooley's Mountain was a resort and an estate. The earliest residents were the Lenape Native Americans, who called it home. The Vanderbilts were among the numerous New York City socialites who trekked to the mountain for its restorative waters. The rich chalybeate-infused waters were thought to improve health, and detoxify the system.Schooley's Mountain County Park offers active and passive recreation on 797 acres (3.23 km2). The park was acquired by the Morris County Parks Commission in 1969 and opened to the public in 1974.Schooley's Mountain General Store opened in 1803 and is the oldest continuously operating general store in the state as of 2023. Notable visitors include Ulysses S. Grant, William Henry Harrison, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Robert De Niro.

Beattystown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located within Mansfield Township, in Warren County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the CDP's population was 4,554.Beattystown has been listed as one of the 10 most endangered historic sites in New Jersey by Preservation New Jersey.Beattystown was named after George Beatty, who built a mill here c. 1762.

Centenary University is a private university in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Founded as a preparatory school by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1867, Centenary evolved into a Junior College for women and later a coeducational four year University offering undergraduate, Master's level, and doctoral graduate programs.Situated in suburban Warren County, New Jersey, 52 miles west of New York City, 35 miles southeast of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and 26 miles northeast of Easton, Pennsylvania, in the Lehigh Valley, the school's main campus is identifiable by the Old Main building, now known as the Seay Building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center is a sports facility located in Hackettstown, New Jersey. It is within the campus of Centenary University and is the home of the Centenary University Cyclones. The school made an expansion and renovation worth $5 million in January 2007. The expanded athletic facility includes a 1,200 seat gymnasium with two full-sized multi-purpose courts, indoor batting cages, a wrestling room, and other amenities.

Schooley's or, officially, Schooleys Mountain is a mountain ridge in northern New Jersey that stretches from Lake Hopatcong in the north to Hampton in the south. It is centrally located within the southern Highlands, positioned almost equidistantly from the Kittatinny Valley in the west and the Piedmont plateau in the east. Schooley's Mountain is also one of the largest ridges in a group of geologically similar and parallel mountains, which include Allamuchy Mountain, Pohatcong Mountain, Scotts Mountain, and Jenny Jump Mountain.

The Jacob C. Allen House is a historic building at 206 West Moore Street in Hackettstown, Warren County, New Jersey. It was built c. 1870 with a Second Empire architectural style. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places for its significance in architecture on August 24, 2005.
