Vaxön

Vaxholm is a city, urban area and the seat of Vaxholm Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden. It occupies the islands of Vaxön and Kullö in the Stockholm archipelago. The name Vaxholm comes from Vaxholm Fortress, which was constructed in 1549 on the adjacent islet of Vaxholmen. For historical reasons it has always been referred to as a city, despite the small number of inhabitants, which as of 2020 total was 6,151. Vaxholm Municipality prefers to use the designation Vaxholms stad (City of Vaxholm) for its whole territory, including 64 islets in the Stockholm archipelago, a usage which is somewhat confusing.

The Pålsundsbron is a road bridge that links the island of Vaxön, and hence the town of Vaxholm, with the Bogesundslandet peninsular to the south of the town. It crosses the Pålsundet strait in the Stockholm archipelago.The bridge was opened in 1926 and provided the first fixed link between the town of Vaxholm and the Swedish mainland. Since 1965 it has been largely replaced in that role by the wider Vaxholmsbron bridge that links to the island of Kullö to the north-west of the town, carrying county road 274 on its way to the mainland. The Pålsundsbron is still used by local traffic between the town and Bogesundslandet.The approximately 170-metre (560 ft) long bridge spans the approximately 315-metre (1,033 ft) wide strait. The current bridge rests on three concrete foundations and has one narrow carriageway. The load-bearing structure consists of steel trusses and the navigation clearance is 2.00 metres (6 ft 7 in). Almost 150 metres (490 ft) of the strait's width is bridged with a road embankment that uses an earlier foundation relating to the 18th century Pålsund battery.After the cold war submarine incursions of the 1980s, a submarine net was installed under the bridge.

Vaxholm Church (Swedish: Vaxholms kyrka) is a church in central Vaxholm, Sweden. The chapel is a single-nave building built in the Neoclassical style. It was completed in 1803 according to drawings by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz and Olof Tempelman. It replaced an earlier wooden church in Vaxholm.

Karlsudd is a settlement in Vaxholm Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden. It is located at the south-eastern tip of the Bogesundslandet peninsula, but is not within the Bogesundslandet nature reserve that occupies most of that peninsular. It is also the only significant settlement within the Vaxholm Municipality that is on the Swedish mainland, rather than on islands of the Stockholm archipelago.Karlsudd has a mixture of old and new buildings, and about 100 households live there. The land formerly belonged to the Brahe family, who owned the entire Bogesundslandet peninsular and Bogesund Castle. The castle lies some 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) west of Karlsudd.Karlsudd is connected to the Swedish road network. Storstockholms Lokaltrafik operates bus route 681 that passes the entrance to Karlsudd on its way to and from Vaxholm town. Karlsudd pier is also served throughout the ice-free period of the year by passenger ships of the Waxholmsbolaget, providing a connection to Vaxholm town and Stockholm city.

The Kastellet ferry (Swedish: Kastelletleden), also known as the Vaxholmen ferry, is a passenger cable ferry in Sweden's Stockholm archipelago. It connects the town of Vaxholm to Vaxholm Castle, situated on an islet in the middle of the Kodjupet strait between the town and the island of Rindö. At its town terminus, the ferry berths next to the quay used by the Waxholmsbolaget passenger ferries that link Vaxholm to central Stockholm and many other islands of the archipelago.The crossing is some 200 metres (660 ft) in length and takes about 2 minutes. There are between two and four return crossings an hour, each of which conveys a maximum of 130 passengers. The service only operates from the start of May to the end of September.The ferry is run by Trafikverket under contract to the Vaxholm Municipality. The municipality is responsible for defining timetables, ticket prices and ferry conditions, while Trafikverket is responsible for operating the ferry.

Vaxholm Fortress (Swedish: Vaxholms fästning), also known as Vaxholm Castle, is a historic fortification on the island of Vaxholmen in the Stockholm archipelago just east of the Swedish town of Vaxholm. It is home to the Vaxholm Fortress Museum. The fortress is accessed by the Kastellet ferry, an electrically powered cable ferry across the channel from Vaxholm town. In 1970, the fortress was used as a movie location for the pirate stronghold in Pippi in the South Seas. A scenic view of the fortress may be seen from the car ferry which plies the short distance between Vaxholm and the island of Rindö.

Edlunda, previously known as Östra Granholmen, is an island in the Stockholm archipelago in Sweden. It is situated in the Höggarnsfjärden waterway to the south of Vaxholm and Karlsudd and north of Stora and Lilla Höggarn. Administratively, it is in Vaxholm Municipality and Stockholm County.Edlunda has no road connection to the mainland or other islands. It is served throughout the year by passenger ships of the Waxholmsbolaget, which call at a pier on the northern side of the island, providing a connection to Vaxholm town and Stockholm city.The neighbouring island is Granholmen, sometimes called Västra Granholmen. The two islands were originally named after Erik and Carl Fredrik Granholm, who bought them in the 1860s. The new name Edlunda arose after Theodor Edlund bought the eastern part of the island in the 1880s and built Villa Edlunda, the first house on the island. This was followed by the heritage-listed Villa Ottarsberg in around 1884. Other early summer villas on Edlunda belonged to Berndt August Hjorth, Sten Dehlgren and Axel Notini.

Granholmen, or Västra Granholmen, is an island in the Stockholm archipelago in Sweden. It is situated in the Höggarnsfjärden waterway to the south of Vaxholm and Karlsudd and north of Stora and Lilla Höggarn. Administratively, it is in Vaxholm Municipality and Stockholm County.Granholmen has no road connection to the mainland or other islands. It is served throughout the year by passenger ships of the Waxholmsbolaget, which call at a pier at the eastern end of the island, providing a connection to Vaxholm town and Stockholm city.The neighbouring island is Edlunda, which was previously called Östra Granholmen. The two islands were originally named after Erik and Carl Fredrik Granholm, who bought them in the 1860s.

Risholmen is an island in the Stockholm archipelago in Sweden. It is situated to the south of Tynningö island, in Vaxholm Municipality and Stockholm County. There are around 15 residential buildings on the island, the oldest of which dates from 1898.Centrally on the north side of the island is the Risberga jetty, which is served by Waxholmsbolaget ships, providing a connection to Vaxholm town and Stockholm city. Ships call on request from spring to autumn, but there is no service in winter.This island should not be mistaken for another island of the same name, situated some 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) to the south-east in Värmdö Municipality.

Bogesund Castle is a former manor in municipality of Vaxholm, about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the east of Stockholm, Sweden. It is located in the center of the Bogesundslandet nature reserve (Bogesundslandets naturreservat). The castle style building overlooks the main shipping channel into and out of Stockholm through the Stockholm archipelago.
