The township's original extent was reduced when the city of Finlayson was incorporated and separated from it. The community is located immediately northwest of Sandstone; near the intersection of Pine County 35, Pine County 28 (Groningen Road), and the former Northern Pacific Railway (now the Willard Munger State Trail).

Banning State Park is a state park in Pine County, Minnesota, United States, stretched along 10 miles (16 km) of the Kettle River near the town of Sandstone. The centerpiece of the park is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of churning rapids, some up to Class IV. The daring kayakers and canoeists who shoot Blueberry Slide, Mother's Delight, Dragon's Tooth, Little Banning, and Hell's Gate each spring attract spectators to the park. Landbound visitors can hike along the state's first Wild and Scenic River amid dramatic sandstone rock formations, large potholes carved by the river, and the remains of a historic quarry. Other features are Wolf Creek Falls and Robinson Ice Cave. The park is located directly off Interstate 35. Banning State Park is open daily from 8am until 10pm. Each vehicle entering the park requires an up to date permit which can be purchased online or at the park office.

The Sandstone station of Sandstone, Minnesota was built in 1895 and served the Great Northern Railway and successor Burlington Northern until 1971. Passenger service ceased upon the formation of Amtrak, but resumed between Minneapolis and Superior in 1975. Sandstone was served by the Arrowhead and later the North Star between Chicago and Duluth. Service ceased after April 7, 1985. The depot still exists, but has been relocated from the tracks.

Grindstone Lake is a large freshwater lake located in Dell Grove Township, Pine County, in east-central Minnesota approximately 6.5 miles (10.5 km) west of Sandstone, Minnesota. The lake is roughly oval shaped being approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) in length north to south and 0.5 miles (0.80 km) east to west, and a maximum depth of 153 feet (47 m). The lake has several small streams that drain the area wetlands and is considered the headwater for the Grindstone River. The lake's name is a translation from the Ojibwe zhiigwanaabikokaa-zaaga'igan (Lake abundant with grind stones). Sandstone taken from near the lake was used to make sharpening stones. The lake, North Fork Grindstone River and the lower course of the Grindstone River are depicted on the 1757 Mitchell Map. Grindstone Lake is a popular resort area drawing cabin owners and visitors from the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It also features a sea plane base, a religious summer camp, and a nature education center.
