Sandstone, Minnesota

The Sandstone station of Sandstone, Minnesota was built in 1895 and served the Great Northern Railway and successor Burlington Northern until 1971. Passenger service ceased upon the formation of Amtrak, but resumed between Minneapolis and Superior in 1975. Sandstone was served by the Arrowhead and later the North Star between Chicago and Duluth. Service ceased after April 7, 1985. The depot still exists, but has been relocated from the tracks.

Banning State Park is a state park in Pine County, Minnesota, United States, stretched along 10 miles (16 km) of the Kettle River near the town of Sandstone. The centerpiece of the park is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of churning rapids, some up to Class IV. The daring kayakers and canoeists who shoot Blueberry Slide, Mother's Delight, Dragon's Tooth, Little Banning, and Hell's Gate each spring attract spectators to the park. Landbound visitors can hike along the state's first Wild and Scenic River amid dramatic sandstone rock formations, large potholes carved by the river, and the remains of a historic quarry. Other features are Wolf Creek Falls and Robinson Ice Cave. The park is located directly off Interstate 35. Banning State Park is open daily from 8am until 10pm. Each vehicle entering the park requires an up to date permit which can be purchased online or at the park office.

The township's original extent was reduced when the city of Finlayson was incorporated and separated from it. The Northern Pacific Depot in Finlayson, Minnesota, United States, is a one-story wood frame passenger depot built on the Northern Pacific Railway line in 1909 to replace an earlier smaller depot. The rail line was originally built by the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad in 1870. Its successor, the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad first located a depot in Finlayson in the mid 1880s. The line was acquired by the Northern Pacific Railway in 1900. In 1970, the line became part of Burlington Northern, which abandoned the line in 1977. Today, the former right-of-way is part of the Willard Munger State Trail. The interior of the depot consists of a freight room at the southern end, the office at the center, and the waiting room at the northern end. The office's trackside bay window is flanked by a wide freight door to the south and a single-leafed five paneled passenger entrance to the north.Finlayson depot lost passenger service on January 4, 1967.
