Shimajiri District (島尻郡, Shimajiri-gun, Okinawan: Shimajiri) is a district located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Modern translation of Shimajiri means "Butt of the island" which may refer to its southerly position on the island of Okinawa. Compare this to Kunigami District, Okinawa. However, there are hundreds of geographic references throughout Japan and even into the northern Kuriles using "shiri", to approximate the Ainu word shir, meaning island. Despite Okinawa being so far south, historically Jōmon culture was dominant as on the mainland, and words likely have survived, though their original meanings have long been lost or modified. As of 2003, the district has an estimated population of 131,670 and the density of 464.36 persons per km2. The total area is 283.55 km2. The district also includes Kume Island, the Kerama Islands, the Aguni Islands, and the Daitō Islands.

Haebaru (南風原町, Haebaru-chō, Okinawan: フェーバル Feebaru) is a town located in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.As of 2016, the town has an estimated population of 37,874 and a density of 3,500 persons per km². The total area is 10.72 km². It is one of the only landlocked towns in Okinawa, but its central location ensures traffic and business remain healthy. Haebaru is located in the south of Okinawa Island directly southeast of the prefectural capital of Naha.Haebaru is home to several pachinko parlors, as well as a skate and BMX ramp under the Okinawa Expressway. There is a large ÆON shopping complex and hypermarket. Haebaru is the birthplace of Ultraman, a fictional television character that grows to a giant size and wrestles with giant monsters. The town is also home to a traditional Ryukyuan craft producing woven fabric or kasuri. It is produced at workshops in Haebaru.In June 2007 dugout bunkers used as military hospitals during the 1945 Battle of Okinawa were opened to the public for tours. In spring 2011, local junior high students began training as peace tour guides in a work experience program aiming to guide members of the public around the caves.

Nanzan Castle (南山城, Nanzan jō, Okinawan: Nanzan Gushiku), officially Shimajiri-Ōzato Castle (島尻大里城, Shimajiri-Ōzato jō, Okinawan: Shimajiri-Ufuzatu Gushiku), is a Ryūkyūan gusuku and was the largest in, and capital of, Nanzan until 1429. It is in ruins, and is located in Itoman.

Okinawa Women's Junior College (沖縄女子短期大学, Okinawa Joshi Tanki Daigaku) is a private junior college in Yonabaru, Okinawa, Japan, established in 1966. Contrary to its name, the college has been accepting male students since 2003. This college relocated from Naha, Okinawa to current location in 2015.

Itokazu Castle (糸数城, Itokazu jō, Okinawan: Ichukaji Gushiku) is a Ryukyuan gusuku in Nanjō, Okinawa. It was built with Ryūkyūan limestone in the mid-14th century. It is now in ruins.

Tomigusuku Castle (豊見城城, Tomigusuku jō, Okinawan: Tumigushiku) is a Ryukyuan gusuku in Tomigusuku, Okinawa. It was built in about 1400 by Ououso, then King of Nanzan, and is now a ruined castle. The castle is not far off of Highway 58.

Okinawa Shogaku High School (沖縄尚学高等学校・附属中学校, Okinawa Shōgaku Kōtō Gakkō Fuzoku Chūgakkō) is a middle school and high school in the Kokuba district of Naha, Okinawa. Okisho, as it is called, is known for its performance in high school baseball tournaments, including National tournament wins in 1999 and 2008.Its colors are green, yellow, and maize. The school motto is "恐れず、侮らず、気負わず," which can directly be translated to "Without fear, disdain, or over-eagerness."

The gardens of Shikina-en (識名園) are located on a small hill to the south of Shuri Castle in Naha, Okinawa. The residence and its gardens are also known as Shichina-nu-Udun (シチナヌウドゥン) or Southern Gardens (南苑), as opposed to the Eastern Gardens (東苑) or Uchayaudun (御茶屋御殿), laid out on a small hill east of Shuri Castle in 1677. In 1992 Hiroshi Shō, the great-grandson of Shō Tai, the last king of the Ryūkyū Kingdom, donated the royal mausoleum of Tamaudun and Shikina-en to the City of Naha.

Okinawa University (沖縄大学, Okinawa daigaku) is a private university in Naha, Okinawa, Japan. The predecessor of the school was founded in 1961, and it was chartered as a university in 1974.

Tomigusuku (豊見城市, Tomigusuku-shi, Okinawan: トゥミグシク, romanized: Tumigushiku) is a city located in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 2012, the city has an estimated population of 60,004 and a population density of 3117 persons per km². The total area is 19.25 km². On April 1, 2002, the administrative status of Tomigusuku was changed from village (Japanese: 村; son) to city (Japanese: 市; shi). Until then it had been the largest village in Japan.

Lake Man (漫湖, Manko) is an area of wetlands in Okinawa that is located between the cities of Naha and Tomigusuku, and within Manko Park. Despite being called "Lake Man", it is in fact a wetland and not a lake. Lake Man covers .11 square kilometres (0.042 sq mi).Lake Man is close to Naha Port, located at the confluence of the lower reaches of the Kokuba River and the Noha River, to the south of Naha. Travelers from outside Okinawa Prefecture, en route from Naha Airport to the city Naha, cross this estuary, with the left side commanding a view of Lake Man. The Manko Waterbird & Wetland Center is located next to the wetland area and provides information and activities related to the area, as well as a boardwalk into the wetlands.The name Manko is pronounced the same as a crude Japanese word for female genitals, resulting in some controversy.

Ōzato Castle (大里城, Ōzato jō, Okinawan: Ufuzatu Gushiku), officially Shimasoe-Ōzato Castle (島添大里城, Shimasoe-Ōzato jō, Okinawan: Shimashii-Ufuzatu Gushiku), is a Ryukyuan gusuku built in Nanzan and used until 1429. It, and the village of Ōzato, are named after the Ōzato Dynasty of Nanzan. It is in ruins, and is an officially designated historical site in Nanjō City, Okinawa.
