Hanging Rock (also known as Dryden's Mount or Dryden's Rock, and to some Aboriginal Australians as Ngannelong) is a distinctive geological formation in central Victoria, Australia. A former volcano, it lies 718 m above sea level (105 m above plain level) on the plain between the two small townships of Newham and Hesket, approximately 70 km north-west of Melbourne and a few kilometres north of Mount Macedon. In the middle of the 19th century, the original occupants of the place—tribes of the Dja Dja Wurrung, Woi Wurrung and Taungurung—were forced from it. They had been its occupants for thousands of years and, colonisation notwithstanding, continue to maintain cultural and spiritual connections to it.In the late 20th century, the area became widely known as the setting of Joan Lindsay's novel Picnic at Hanging Rock.

The Shire of Macedon Ranges is a region in Central Victoria, Australia, best known for its native forests, geographical attraction Hanging Rock, and artisan food and wine industries. The region covers an area of 1,748 square kilometres (675 sq mi). It is located in between the cities of Bendigo and Melbourne. In August 2021 the shire had a population of 51,458. It includes the towns of Gisborne, Gisborne South, Kyneton, Lancefield, Macedon, Malmsbury, Mount Macedon, New Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey and Woodend. The Shire is named after the region's major geographical feature, the Macedon Ranges. It has become one of Victoria's most popular tourist attractions and contains some of its most sought-after real estate.It is governed and administered by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Kyneton, it also has service centres located in Gisborne, Romsey and Woodend. . Macedon Ranges was one of the highest-rated areas in Australia in the Quality of Life Index 2008. It was the highest rated in Victoria (outside Melbourne), and was 13th of 590 Australian local government areas.

Hesket is a locality in the Macedon Ranges Shire, in Victoria, Australia on the northern side of the Mount Macedon Range. The settlement was originally known as Ferny Creek.Hesket Post Office opened on 1 November 1866 and closed in 1971.Today the locality consists of the Hesket Primary School (State School 1004) and the Hesket-Kerrie CFA fire station.

Braemar College is an ecumenical co-curricular private school located on Mount Macedon in Woodend, Victoria, Australia. Initially the school's board consisted of representatives from the three local municipalities (Shire of Gisborne, Shire of Romsey and Shire of Newham and Woodend – now replaced by the newer Shire of Macedon Ranges) and the three local Christian denomination churches (Anglican, Catholic and Uniting). The school's motto is Unum Corpus Multi Sumus (One body, many parts).

Clyde School was founded as a private girls' school in 1910 in Alma Road, St Kilda, Victoria, Australia by Isabel Henderson, a leading educationist of her day. It quickly gained a reputation for excellent academic results. The school was relocated to Macedon, near Hanging Rock in 1919.

Woodend North (traditionally North Woodend) is a locality 4 km north of Woodend, Victoria in the Shire of Macedon Ranges in central Victoria, Australia. Formerly a distinct locality, Woodend North has effectively become the northern extension of the township of Woodend. The locality is now a mainly residential and agricultural area, with some light secondary industrial sites. At the 2006 census, Woodend North had a population of 313.

Mount Macedon ( MASS-ə-dən; Aboriginal Woiwurrung language: Geboor or Geburrh) is a dormant volcano that is part of the Macedon Ranges of the Great Dividing Range, located in the Central Highlands region of Victoria, Australia. The mountain has an elevation of 1,001 metres (3,284 ft) with a prominence of 643 metres (2,110 ft) and is located approximately 65 kilometres (40 mi) northwest of Melbourne.

Cherokee is a locality situated in the Macedon Ranges Shire, in Victoria, Australia 73 kilometres (45 mi) north of the state capital, Melbourne. The settlement as it appears today was created by land subdivision around 1880–1881, although the area was occupied by Europeans before this date. Timber mills and a school were operating by 1865, possibly earlier, in response to the demand for timber created by the Victorian gold rush.Cherokee Post Office opened on 1 July 1927 and closed in 1955.

Hascombe is a nineteenth-century hill station garden located at Mount Macedon in Victoria, Australia. The 11 hectare garden, located on Alton Road, is regarded as one of Victoria's finest and is listed on the Register of the National Estate.

The Mount Macedon Memorial Cross is a heritage-listed war memorial at 405 Cameron Drive, Mount Macedon, Macedon Ranges Shire, Victoria, Australia. It is also known as the Cameron Memorial Cross. It was listed on the Victorian Heritage Register on 1 September 1994.

Rochford is a locality in the Macedon Ranges Shire, in Victoria, Australia, on the Lancefield-Woodend Road (now signposted as the Rochford Road). The district once contained a number of public and religious buildings, all of which now appear to have been removed or demolished. These included a Public Hall, Anglican Church, Presbyterian Church, and tennis courts.Rochford Post Office opened on 10 March 1863 and closed in 1965.The 1857 red brick building & former 1870 principal's residence of the former Rochford North School (State School 540) is still standing and is now a privately owned luxury holiday rental.

The Shire of Newham and Woodend was a local government area about 70 kilometres (43 mi) northwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of 246.05 square kilometres (95.0 sq mi), and existed from 1861 until 1995.
