Medway Viaducts

Baty's Marsh is a 10.4-hectare (26-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Rochester in Kent. It is owned and managed by Medway Council.This is one of the few remaining salt marshes in the Medway area, and it has a rich fauna, especially wading birds.There is access from Manor Lane.

Ranscombe Farm, in Cuxton in North Kent, is a Plantlife Nature Reserve and working farm. Part of the site is included in the Cobham Woods Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the whole farm is within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Ranscombe Farm Reserve works in partnership with five other sites in the local area. They are Shorne Woods Country Park, Jeskyns, Cobham Park, Ashenbank Wood and the Cobham Leisure Plots.It has been a source for flower collectors for centuries. Nationally rare species, Hairy Mallow and Meadow Clary, were both collected from Ranscombe Farm, in 1699 and 1792 respectively. Other rarities include Ground Pine and Broad-leaved Cudweed and at least six species of orchid including Fly, Lady ('Fair Maidens of Kent') and Man Orchid.The chalk grassland hosts a rich suite of plants including Wild Liquorice and Horseshoe Vetch. The arable flora includes Corncockle, Blue Pimpernel, Night-flowering Catchfly, Narrow-fruited Cornsalad (Valerianella dentata) [2] and Dense-flowered Fumitory.

Borstal is a place in the Medway unitary authority of Kent in South East England. Originally a village near Rochester, it has become absorbed by the expansion of Rochester. The youth prison at Borstal gave its name to the Borstal reform school system.

Cuxton railway station is on the Medway Valley Line in Kent, England, and lies well to the east of the village of Cuxton. It is 33 miles 36 chains (53.8 km) down the line from London Charing Cross via Strood and is situated between Strood and Halling. The station and all trains that serve the station are operated by Southeastern.

HM Prison Rochester (formerly known as Borstal Prison) is a male Young Offenders Institution, founded in 1874, and located in the Borstal area of Rochester in Kent, England. The prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison Service, and is located next to HMP Cookham Wood.

Nashenden Down is a 55-hectare (140-acre) nature reserve on the southern outskirts of Rochester in Kent. It is managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust, and is in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.This nature reserve was created from a large arable field in 2009, and it is being regenerated with chalk grassland species, partly by colonisation from a steep bank which escaped ploughing and partly by seed spreading. An area of scrub provides a habitat for birds.There is access to the site from Nashenden Farm Lane.

Fort Borstal was built as an afterthought from the 1859 Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom, by convict labour. Construction started in 1875 but was suspended in 1885. The fort was completed around 1895. it was one of a series of four forts that ringed Chatham.Fort Borstal was designed to hold the high ground southwest of Rochester, South East England. It is of polygonal design and was not originally armed. An anti-aircraft battery was based there in the Second World War. A 18 in (457 mm) gauge railway was built connecting the four Chatham ring forts of Borstal, Bridgewoods, Horstead and Luton. A rope-worked incline led west from Fort Borstal down to a gravel pit and wharf on the River Medway. About 600 yards (550 m) of track remains intact at Fort Borstal.After many years' use as a pig farm and store for the nearby Young Offenders Institution it was sold in 1991 to a company hoping to make it a museum, but that proved unsuccessful and the fort has been converted into living accommodation. There is no public access to the site.

Strood is a town in the unitary authority of Medway in Kent, South East England. The town forms a conurbation with neighbouring towns Chatham, Rochester, Gillingham and Rainham. It lies on the northwest bank of the River Medway at its lowest bridging point. Strood began as a manor then chapelry of Frindsbury until gaining its own parish status in 1193. Today Frindsbury is effectively, in all but a few associations such as in the Church of England, the northern part of Strood. Strood's history has been dominated by the river and facing port-associated towns, particularly its road and rail bridges since the Roman era to Rochester and the two other Medway Towns immediately adjoining and beyond from the north-east quarter of Kent to London and the rest of Britain. It has a mixed retail and leisure area at its heart. Most of its sources of employment are the other Medway towns, their associated commercial, industrial and logistics parks. Among its broadest named neighbourhoods are the "Earl estate" and Marlowe Park, one named after a house builder, the other after the grounds of a former mansion house.

Temple Manor is a scheduled ancient monument (number 1011805) and grade I listed building (number 1120910) in Strood, Kent. The Manor has been owned by various religious, national and farming owners over 600 years. The building has been added to and adapted over the centuries, but the basic structure is now clearly visible. The house is now owned by English Heritage and is open to the public on weekends in season. A camera is a subsidiary farm of a preceptory (a medieval monastery of the military orders of Knights Templar or Knights Hospitaller). Camerae are very rare in England with less than 40 known examples. In view of this rarity, and their importance in supporting the monastic communities of the preceptories (examples of which are also rare), all camerae exhibiting archaeological survival are identified as nationally important.

Rede Common is a 11.2-hectare (28-acre) Local Nature Reserve in Strood in Kent. It is owned and managed by Medway Council in partnership with Friends of Rede Common.Known locally as Sandy Banks due to the underlying Thanet Beds, Rede Common was formerly farmland used for grazing, arable and market gardening and is now an area of open acid grasslands surrounded by scrub and trees.Access points include entrances in Watling Street, Hyacinth Road and Columbine Close.Friends of Rede Common conducted a survey of the site in 2020 finding wood mice, field voles, bank voles, foxes, grey squirrels, brown rats and moles. The group also observes a diverse range of birds and butterflies throughout the year. The Strood Community Trail passes through Rede Common.

HM Prison Cookham Wood is a male young persons' prison and Young Offenders Institution in the village of Borstal (near Rochester) in Kent, England. The prison is operated by His Majesty's Prison and probation Service.
