The Widefield School District 3 is a public school district serving parts of western El Paso County, Colorado, United States. It primarily serves Security-Widefield, but it also serves southeastern Colorado Springs, which is where the district office is located.

Widefield High School is a high school in Security-Widefield, Colorado, United States. It opened its doors in 1958 and is the older of the two high schools in Widefield School District 3. Widefield's mascot is the Gladiator and its colors are navy blue, Columbia blue, silver and white.

On May 9, 2021, a mass shooting occurred at a birthday party in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States. Seven people were killed, including the gunman who committed suicide.

James Irwin Charter High School (JICHS) is a charter secondary school in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States, serving student grades in the ninth through twelfth grades. The school is named in honor of astronaut James Irwin, the eighth person to walk on the moon.

Sierra High School was the second high school to be built in Colorado Springs' School District 2. It is the most populated high school in its district. The school's mascot is a Stallion, and the school colors are cardinal and gold. Colorado Springs offers concurrent enrollment courses, open Advanced Placement classes, and Colorado State University partnered with the school, in which Sierra graduates receive a $16,000 scholarship to attend CSU-Fort Collins.

The Fountain Valley School of Colorado is a private, co-educational independent college preparatory school for students in 9th through 12th grades. The school's primary campus is located on 1,100 acres (445 ha) of rolling prairie at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The CDP is a part of the Colorado Springs, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of the Stratmoor CDP was 6,900 at the United States Census 2010. United Airlines Flight 585 was a scheduled passenger flight on March 3, 1991, from Denver to Colorado Springs, Colorado, carrying 20 passengers and 5 crew members on board. The plane experienced a rudder hardover while on final approach to runway 35 at Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, causing the plane to roll over and enter an uncontrolled dive. All 25 people on board were killed. The NTSB was initially unable to resolve the cause of the crash, but after similar accidents and incidents involving Boeing 737 aircraft, the crash was determined to be caused by a defect in the design of the 737's rudder power control unit.: ix 

Sand Creek is a stream in El Paso County, Colorado, and a tributary of Fountain Creek. Banning Lewis Number 1 Dam, located approximately one mile south of Shirley, was built across the East Fork of Sand Creek to create Banning Lewis Reservoir Number 1.Sand Creek is not to be confused with Big Sandy Creek, location of the Sand Creek Massacre.
