Westerham Wood

The Pilgrims' Way (also Pilgrim's Way or Pilgrims Way) is the historical route supposedly taken by pilgrims from Winchester in Hampshire, England, to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury in Kent. This name, of comparatively recent coinage, is applied to a pre-existing ancient trackway dated by archaeological finds to 600–450 BC, but probably in existence since the Stone Age. The prehistoric route followed the "natural causeway" east to west on the southern slopes of the North Downs.The course was dictated by the natural geography: it took advantage of the contours, avoided the sticky clay of the land below but also the thinner, overlying "clay with flints" of the summits. In places a coexisting ridgeway and terrace way can be identified; the route followed would have varied with the season, but it would not drop below the upper line of cultivation. The trackway ran the entire length of the North Downs, leading to and from Folkestone: the pilgrims would have had to turn away from it, north along the valley of the Great Stour near Chilham, to reach Canterbury.

Westerham is a town and civil parish in the Sevenoaks District of Kent, England. It is located 3.4 miles east of Oxted and 6 miles west of Sevenoaks, adjacent to the Kent border with both Greater London and Surrey. It is recorded as early as the 9th century, and was mentioned in the Domesday Book in a Norman form, Oistreham (compare Ouistreham in Normandy, Oistreham in 1086). Hām is Old English for a village or homestead, and so Westerham means a westerly homestead. The River Darent flows through the town, and formerly powered three watermills.

Betsom's Hill is a hill on the North Downs, and the highest point in the county of Kent at 251 metres (823 ft). Situated between Westerham and Tatsfield, at the western edge of the county, it lies close to where the A233 crosses the Downs en route to Biggin Hill. This is the highest part of the North Downs, with Botley Hill the highest point, nearby to the west. The hill lies at the western end of the Kent Downs, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Westerham railway station served the village of Westerham in Kent from 1881 until its closure in 1961.

Quebec House is the birthplace of General James Wolfe on what is now known as Quebec Square in Westerham, Kent, England. The house is listed Grade I on the National Heritage List for England since September 1954.The house dates from the mid 16th century but much of the current appearance is from the 1630s. It was originally called Spiers but renamed in honour of Wolfe's death and victory at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. The house is now owned by the National Trust and open to the public with paintings and memorabilia relating to Wolfe's life.

Clacket Lane services is a motorway service station on the M25 motorway midway between junctions 5 and 6, in Surrey, United Kingdom, adjacent to the parish borders between Limpsfield, Surrey and Westerham, Kent, a small village and a town respectively. It is the largest Roadchef services in the UK, and one of the largest and busiest on the UK motorway network serving traffic on the extremely busy southern stretch of the M25 London orbital motorway, and traffic to and from the coastal ports and the Channel Tunnel. It is named after a road which passes over the motorway nearby.

South Street is a hamlet in the far south of the London Borough of Bromley, 16.5 miles (27 km) south south-east from Charing Cross. It is the highest settlement in all of London averaging about 220 metres (722 ft) above sea level. It is about 5 miles (8.0 km) from Junction 5 of the M25. Since the early 1920s, the area has more generally been known as Westerham Hill, the name South Street having fallen out of favour for being overly specific part of Westerham Hill is the highest point in London and as with all of the North Downs its southern face is quite sheer. The south face here is in Kent.Like neighbouring villages, South Street’s principal crop was strawberries, grown on a dozen farms and sold at Covent Garden; grass for grazing (pasture) and haymaking, tending, including shearing of sheep, cows and other animals provided other main agricultural income. South Street also staged an annual horse show and had a stud farm.

Westerham Mines is a 25.4-hectare (63-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest south of Westerham in Kent.The main interest of this site lies in the use of former mines by five species of bats for hibernation. They are the whiskered, Brandt's, Daubenton's, Natterer's and long-eared bats. Some moths also hibernate in the mines.There is access to the site, but not the mines which are sealed off by grilles.

Aperfield is a hamlet and area in London, England, within the London Borough of Bromley, 16.2 miles (26 km) south-southeast of Charing Cross. It is near Biggin Hill and Berry's Green. The name has its first recorded use in 1242 as Apeldrefeld and means field where apple trees grow, from the Old English words apuldor and feld.
