South Main Street Historic District (Watkinsville, Georgia)

Watkinsville is the largest town and county seat of Oconee County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town had a total population of 2,896. It served as the seat of Clarke County until 1872 when the county seat of that county was moved to Athens, a move which ultimately led to the creation of Oconee County in 1875. It is included in the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The Eagle Tavern is one of the earliest surviving structures in Watkinsville, Oconee County, Georgia, United States. The Eagle Tavern was built circa 1801 but possibly as early as 1794. In the early part of the 19th century, the city of Watkinsville, Georgia was on the frontier of Creek and Cherokee Indian Territories. The site of the tavern may also have been the site of Fort Edwards, a gathering place for settlers seeking protection from attack by the Creek and Cherokee. The building housed a hotel until about 1930. The tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 13 May 1970.

The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 due to its number of historic resources within the town of Bishop's limits. At private, public-local and public-federal levels, the town has 63 contributing buildings, one contributing site and one contributing structure.The area registered as having historical significance is roughly along Price Mill Road, Old Bishop Road and U.S. Route 441 within the Bishop town limits.

The Garden contains eleven botanical and horticultural collections: Annual/Perennial Garden - annuals and perennials Dahlia Garden (1987) - dahlias Groundcover Collection - bugleflower, euonymus, hypericum, ivy, juniper, liriope, ophiopogon, thrift, vinca, etc. Heritage Garden - plants of historic and social interest to Georgia, including apples, pears, and peaches, cotton, peanuts, and tobacco. International Garden - Middle Ages (Herb Garden and Physic Garden), Age of Exploration (Mediterranean & Middle East, Spanish America, American South, and China sections), and Age of Conservation (American Indian Plants, Bog Garden, Threatened & Endangered Plants). Native Azalea Collection - azaleas Native Flora Garden - more than 300 species, including ferns, trilliums, bloodroot, and lady slipper orchids. Rhododendron Collection (1976) - rhododendrons Flower Garden - Brand new in 2008. Shade Garden - azalea, camellia, dogwood, laurel, magnolia, redbud, and viburnum. Trial Garden - shrubs and trees under evaluation for the southeastern United States.It also contains about 5 miles (8.0 km) of nature trails. In 1984, it received the designation as Georgia's "State Botanical Garden".
