Barber Creek is a stream in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is a tributary to McNutt Creek.Barber Creek was named after Robert Barber, a pioneer citizen. A variant name is "Barbers Creek".

The Athens Confederate Monument is a Confederate memorial near Barber Creek in Athens, Georgia, United States. It is a Carrara marble obelisk mounted on a granite foundation engraved with names of the city's soldiers who were killed during the American Civil War. It was formerly located in the median strip of Broad Street in the Downtown Local Historic District of Athens until being removed in 2020 and being placed at its current site in 2021.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a botanical garden of 313 acres (127 hectares) in the United States, with a conservatory operated by the University of Georgia. It is located at 2450 South Milledge Avenue, Athens, Georgia. The Garden contains eleven botanical and horticultural collections: Annual/Perennial Garden - annuals and perennials Dahlia Garden (1987) - dahlias Groundcover Collection - bugleflower, euonymus, hypericum, ivy, juniper, liriope, ophiopogon, thrift, vinca, etc. Heritage Garden - plants of historic and social interest to Georgia, including apples, pears, and peaches, cotton, peanuts, and tobacco. International Garden - Middle Ages (Herb Garden and Physic Garden), Age of Exploration (Mediterranean & Middle East, Spanish America, American South, and China sections), and Age of Conservation (American Indian Plants, Bog Garden, Threatened & Endangered Plants). Native Azalea Collection - azaleas Native Flora Garden - more than 300 species, including ferns, trilliums, bloodroot, and lady slipper orchids. Rhododendron Collection (1976) - rhododendrons Flower Garden - Brand new in 2008. Shade Garden - azalea, camellia, dogwood, laurel, magnolia, redbud, and viburnum. Trial Garden - shrubs and trees under evaluation for the southeastern United States.It also contains about 5 miles (8.0 km) of nature trails. In 1984, it received the designation as Georgia's "State Botanical Garden".

Turner Soccer Complex is a 1,700-capacity stadium located in Athens, Georgia. It is primarily used for soccer and serves as the home field for the Georgia Bulldogs women's soccer team. The complex is named for Hoyt "Jack" Turner, an Athens native who has financially supported Bulldogs soccer and other athletic endeavors for several years. The stadium opened on September 1, 1998 (1998-09-01). Turner Soccer Complex hosted the 2000 Southeastern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament.

The Oconee County School District is a public school district in Oconee County, Georgia, United States, based in Watkinsville. It serves the communities of Bishop, Bogart, North High Shoals, and Watkinsville.

The Eagle Tavern is one of the earliest surviving structures in Watkinsville, Oconee County, Georgia, United States. The Eagle Tavern was built circa 1801 but possibly as early as 1794. In the early part of the 19th century, the city of Watkinsville, Georgia was on the frontier of Creek and Cherokee Indian Territories. The site of the tavern may also have been the site of Fort Edwards, a gathering place for settlers seeking protection from attack by the Creek and Cherokee. The building housed a hotel until about 1930. The tavern was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 13 May 1970.

Watkinsville is the largest town and county seat of Oconee County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town had a total population of 2,896. It served as the seat of Clarke County until 1872 when the county seat of that county was moved to Athens, a move which ultimately led to the creation of Oconee County in 1875. It is included in the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area.

On February 22, 2024, Laken Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student, was killed while she was jogging at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. Her body was found in Oconee Forest Park near Lake Herrick; her death was caused by blunt force trauma and asphyxiation. The suspect, José Antonio Ibarra, is a 26-year-old Venezuelan who had entered the United States illegally. He was arrested by UGA police and has been charged with 10 charges, including felony murder, malice murder, false imprisonment aggravated assault with intent to rape and kidnapping. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The trial is expected to take place on November 18, 2024. The killing of Riley made international news, generating extensive media attention. It sparked a debate over immigration in the United States after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed Ibarra is not a U.S. citizen and was caught crossing the border but was released into the United States. On March 7, 2024, the House of Representatives passed an immigration bill named the Laken Riley Act, requiring federal detention of migrants who commit burglary or theft.

WGAU (1340 AM, "News-Talk 1340") is a radio station licensed to serve Athens, Georgia, United States, that broadcasts a news/talk format. The station is owned by Cox Media Group. The transmitter is located at the studios (with WNGC) in Five Points. WGAU began broadcasting on May 1, 1938. In 1948, WGAU put WGAU-FM on the air. It was purchased in 1956 by Clarke Broadcasting Company, owned by H. Randolph Holder and Tom Lloyd, two broadcasters who also owned WLAQ in Rome, Georgia, and WGRI in Griffin, Georgia. Holder was a popular Athens newsman whose morning and midday news commentaries had a wide following. The station has played many different musical formats before switching to the current format of news and talk in the early 1990s. Over the years, it served as a launching pad for a number of successful broadcasters who worked at WGAU during their student days at the Henry Grady College of Journalism at the nearby University of Georgia: Harry Chapman, later with WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee, and Bruce Bartley, the lead newscaster of Atlanta's WSB Radio. Former WGAU news director John Holliman went on to be a news reporter for CNN. He rose to prominence as one of CNN's "Boys of Baghdad" during the first Persian Gulf War in 1991 and was one of only three journalists reporting from Baghdad when allied bombing of the city began. He was later known for his coverage of science, technology, and space exploration. In May 1999, NASA dedicated the Launch Complex 39 Press Site auditorium at the Kennedy Space Center in Holliman's name. Country legend Bill Anderson was a DJ on WGAU in the 1950s when he was 19, and was fired for playing country music. In an interview with Tim Bryant [1], Bill said H. Randolph Holder, owner of WGAU, offered him a job under the condition he would not play country music. One evening, Bill was running an Atlanta Crackers baseball game which became rained out. Instructions in the studio said if the game gets rained out, to switch to the CBS Radio Network. When Bill switched to the network, The "Louisiana Hay Ride" was on, and Johnny Horton's "Honky Tonk Man" was playing. Before the song was finished, Holder had called Bill to get the program off the air. Holder fired Bill that following Monday, but got him a job at a new radio station in Commerce. In January 2008, it was announced that WGAU and WNGC were sold (along with sister stations WGMG, WPUP, WRFC) to Cox Radio in Atlanta. WGAU was the home to many University of Georgia sports, which air now on sister "Sports Radio 960 WRFC" Current notable local programming includes "Classic City Today" with Tim Bryant and "Newsmakers" with Tim Bryant. Notable syndicated programming includes talk shows by right-wing conservatives Brian Kilmeade, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Dana Losech as well as consumer advocate Clark Howard and the paranormal Coast to Coast AM radio show. The station is an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves radio network, the largest radio affiliate network in Major League Baseball. The station is also affiliated with Fox News Radio and The Weather Channel.

The Alexander Campbell King Law Library is the main law library of the University of Georgia School of Law. It is located in Hirsch Hall, one of two law school buildings on the nationally recognized historic North Quadrangle of the University of Georgia campus in Athens, Georgia. It also features the Louis B. Sohn Library on International Relations, located inside the Dean Rusk International Law Center, in the law school's Dean Rusk Hall. It is named after the famous Georgia jurist Alexander Campbell King, who would become a founding partner of the international law firm King & Spalding LLP, a firm with which the University of Georgia has close ties. The library holds more than a half million digital and print titles and is a leader in the provision of information in electronic formats. Its collection is particularly strong in historical legal materials and comparative and international law. The library has won a number of awards and accolades over the years.

Five Points is a retail corridor and neighborhood in Athens, Georgia, centered on the intersection of Milledge Avenue and Lumpkin Street. It occupies the South-Southwest edge of the University of Georgia campus. Milledge Avenue is home to many University of Georgia Greek chapter houses, and is included in a tour by the Athens Welcome Center.

The South Main Street Historic District of Watkinsville, Georgia is a 35 acres (14 ha) historic district along S. Main St. and Harden Hill Rd. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It included 19 contributing buildings.It includes Greek Revival, Queen Anne, and Gothic Revival architecture. It includes the Watkinsville Methodist Church and the Butler House and the Veale House.
