Southwest Historic District is a national historic district located at Roanoke, Virginia. It encompasses 1,547 contributing buildings constructed between 1882 and 1930 in the Roanoke neighborhoods of Old Southwest, Mountain View, and Hurt Park. It is a primarily residential district with houses in a variety of popular late-19th and early-20th century architectural styles. The district also includes a small number of commercial structures, churches, and two schools.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The Salvation Army Citadel is a historic religious building in Roanoke, Virginia. Built in 1941 in the Colonial Revival style, the site was the headquarters for the Salvation Army's operations in Roanoke, including church services, social services, and outreach. After the church constructed a new primary location in 1980, the building served as the Red Shield Lodge, a men's homeless shelter, until closing in 2018. It was listed to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020, and reopened that year as an apartment building.

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is a public medical school of Virginia Tech and located in Roanoke, Virginia. The medical school is associated with the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. Formed as a public–private partnership with the Carilion Clinic, the medical school grants the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree to its graduates. Initially a private institution from 2008-2018, the medical school became an official college of Virginia Tech in 2018.

Salem Avenue–Roanoke Automotive Commercial Historic District is a national historic district located of Roanoke, Virginia. It encompasses 59 contributing buildings in the southwestern part of the City of Roanoke. The district includes a variety of buildings having automotive, warehouse, light industrial and residential uses. Most of the buildings are small-scale, one or two-story brick or concrete block buildings, with the majority built between about 1920 and 1954. Notable buildings include the former Enfield Buick Dealership (c. 1930), Lindsay-Robinson & Co. Building (1918), Fulton Motor Company Auto Sales & Service (1928), Lacy Edgerton Motor Company (c. 1927), Roanoke Motor Car Company (c. 1946), and Fire Department No. 3 (1909).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, with boundary increases in 2008 and 2014.

Wasena is a Roanoke, Virginia (United States) neighborhood located in south, central Roanoke bisected by U.S. Route 221 (Main Street), immediately to the south of the Roanoke River. It borders the neighborhoods of Raleigh Court on the west, Old Southwest on the north and east and Mountain View via the Wasena Bridge across the Roanoke River on the north, and Franklin-Colonial on the south. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, Wasena has a population of 1,633 residents.

Mountain View, also known as the Fishburn Mansion, is a historic home in the Mountain View neighborhood in Roanoke, Virginia. It is a 2+1⁄2-story, rectangular Georgian Revival-style house that was built in 1907. It features a colossal portico consisting of two clusters of three fluted Ionic order columns supporting an Ionic entablature topped by a pediment containing a lunette. It also has a series of one-story porches, a conservatory, and a porte cochere.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Mountain View is a Roanoke, Virginia neighborhood located in central Roanoke north of the Roanoke River. It borders the neighborhoods of Norwich on the west, West End on the east, Hurt Park on the north and Raleigh Court and Wasena on the south.In March 2011, This Old House, America’s most respected home improvement authority, selected Mountain View as Virginia’s “Best Old House Neighborhood 2011” in its annual list of “North America’s most timeless neighborhoods—places where lovingly crafted old houses have extraordinary pasts and unarguably promising futures.”Mountain View was one of 64 neighborhoods in the U.S. and Canada recognized by This Old House, which distributed nomination forms to more than 14,000 historical societies, neighborhood groups, and preservation nonprofits to compile its “biggest-ever list of off-the-beaten-path places that are worth eyeing for a great old home.”

Norfolk and Western 1218 is a preserved four-cylinder simple articulated 2-6-6-4 steam locomotive, built in June 1943 by the Norfolk and Western's (N&W) Roanoke (East End) Shops in Roanoke, Virginia as part of the N&W's class "A" fleet of fast freight locomotives. It was retired from regular revenue service in July 1959, and was later restored by Norfolk Southern for excursion service for their steam program, pulling excursions throughout the eastern United States from 1987 to 1991. It is currently on display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, Virginia.

Fire Station No. 5 in Roanoke, Virginia is a former fire station at 216 12th Street NW, in the independent city of Roanoke. The neighborhood fire station was one of three built in 1911, and was designed to look like a house, blending into its residential neighborhood. It housed one of the city's first fire trucks to be powered by an internal combustion engine. It served the city as a fire station until 2010, when it was turned over to a local nonprofit organization.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011 as City of Roanoke Fire Station No. 5.

Also in the district are a few commercial buildings, several industrial buildings, a park along the river and the Wasena Bridge.

Norfolk and Western Railway Freight Station is a historic freight depot located in the Melrose-Rugby neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. It encompasses 111 contributing buildings and 2 contributing objects in a planned residential subdivision, with most of the dwellings being built between the late 1910s and late 1940s. It is a primarily residential district with single-family dwellings. The houses include American Craftsman-style bungalow, American Foursquare, and Cape Cod style. The building houses the Virginia Museum of TransportationIt was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
