Chollerton railway station

Cooklaw is a small settlement and (as Cocklaw) a former civil parish, now in the parish of Wall, in Northumberland, England. It is near the A6079 road and the River North Tyne. In 1951 the parish had a population of 119.

Chollerton is a village in Northumberland, England, on the A6079 road about six miles (10 km) to the north of Hexham, on the River North Tyne. Nearby villages include Low Brunton and Humshaugh. The village has a fine example of a mounting block standing at the churchyard gate. The church, built around the 12th century from local stone quarried from nearby, is dedicated to Saint Giles, and is noteworthy for the four large Roman columns built into its south aisle. These are believed to have been brought from the Roman fort of Chesters a couple of miles downstream. Chollerton is also a registration sub-district in Northumberland; its population in 1851 was 5024 people. The etymology of the name Chollerton is uncertain; possibly it is from the Old English "Ceolferth's tun" but more likely it meant "tun by Ceolan ford or Ceolford", if so "Ceolford" meant "Ceola's ford" (i.e. modern Chollerford).

Tynedale was a local government district in Northumberland, England. The district had a resident population of 58,808 according to the 2001 census. The main towns were Hexham, Haltwhistle and Prudhoe. The district contained part of Hadrian's Wall and the southern part of Northumberland National Park. With an area of 2,219 km2 (857 sq mi) it was the second-largest English district, after the East Riding of Yorkshire. It was bigger than several English counties, including Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Hertfordshire. It was also the second-least densely populated district (behind Eden, Cumbria). The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, and was a merger of Hexham and Prudhoe urban districts, along with Bellingham, Haltwhistle and Hexham rural districts. Tynedale was historically a liberty created alongside the county of Hexhamshire by Henry I of England. The district was abolished as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England effective from 1 April 2009 with responsibilities being transferred to Northumberland County Council, a unitary authority. However, the name "Tynedale", which predates the formation of the council, is still widely used for the Tyne Valley area of Northumberland.

Brunton Bank Quarry is a disused quarry now designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Northumberland, North East England. The quarry exposes a base layer of the Namurian Great Limestone stratigraphic unit, including the Chaetetes Band, the fossilised fauna within which is of current geological interest.

Humshaugh railway station served the village of Chollerford, Northumberland, England from 1858 to 1958 on the Border Counties Railway.

Hadrian's Wall Path is a long-distance footpath in the north of England, which became the 15th National Trail in 2003. It runs for 84 miles (135 km), from Wallsend on the east coast of England to Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast. For most of its length it is close to the remains of Hadrian's Wall, the defensive wall built by the Romans on the northern border of their empire. This is now recognised as part of the "Frontiers of the Roman Empire" World Heritage Site.

Planetrees is an extant section of Hadrian's Wall named after the farm located around 250 metres (270 yd) to the west. The surviving section is 35 metres (115 ft) in length.

Chollerford Bridge is a stone bridge that replaced an earlier medieval bridge crossing the River North Tyne at Chollerford, Northumberland, England. It is a Grade II listed building. It was built in 1785 by Robert Mylne after the previous bridge had been swept away in the great floods of 1771. Hadrian's Wall crossed the river to Chesters Roman Fort on the multi-arched Chesters Bridge about 700 m (770 yd) to the southwest.

Chollerford is a village in Northumberland, England, approximately four miles (seven km) north of Hexham (via the A6079 road) on the B6318, the Military Road, not far from Hadrian's Wall. There is a roundabout in the village where the B6318 and B6320 roads meet and the traffic light-controlled Chollerford Bridge crosses the River North Tyne. Beside the river is The George Hotel.

Milecastle 26 (Planetrees) was a milecastle of the Roman Hadrian's Wall. Its position is slightly to the south of, but mostly covered by the B6318 Military Road., and it is located around 700 metres (0.43 mi) east of the B6318 Military Road's junction with the A6079. No visible traces exist currently. The dimensions are the same as Milecastles 23, 24, and 25.

Haughton Castle is a privately owned country mansion and Grade I listed building, situated to the north of the village of Humshaugh on the west bank of the North Tyne. It is around 5+1⁄2 miles (8.9 km) north of the market town of Hexham, Northumberland. It was built originally in the 13th century as a tower house and enlarged and fortified in the 14th century. At this time the castle was owned by Gerald Widdrington and, although the Widdringtons still owned it in the early 14th century, the Swinburns were living there. By the 16th century, the castle fell into ruin and disrepair, and it was attacked by Border reivers. A survey of 1541 reported the roof and floors to be "decayed and gone". The property was acquired by the Smith family in about 1640, but in 1715 a further survey stated the building to be ruinous. Significant alterations were carried out for the Smiths between 1816 and 1845, latterly by architect John Dobson to convert the ruin into a substantial mansion. The Crawshaw family came into possession in 1862, and a west wing was added for them by Anthony Salvin in 1876. In the late 19th century it was acquired by the Cruddas family. Part of the castle served as a hospital during the Second World War. It is currently owned by the Braithwaite family. Some commentators suggest it is the location for the traditional song "Waters of Tyne".
