East College Street Historic District

The Summit Apartment Building, also known as the Summit Street Cooperative Apartments, is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. This is the only known Iowa work of Chicago architect Parker Nobel Berry, a student of, and chief designer for, Louis Sullivan. The building is a stripped-down version of his original plan, which proved too expensive to build. The three-story structure follows a U-shaped plan, and is built on a raised basement. Completed in 1916, it was Iowa City's first apartment flat. The Prairie School-style building was built by local developer, Dr. Frank C. Titzell, who continued to own it until his death in 1932. His wife Bertha owned it until 1939 when she sold it to an out-of-state buyer. In 1947 it became the first Housing cooperative in the state after the Iowa General Assembly passed the Cooperative Housing Authorization Act earlier in the same year. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Lindsay House is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was listed, misspelled as the Linsay House, on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The house was built in 1893 by John Jayne, an Iowa City bridge builder. The plans for the 2½-story, frame, Queen Anne were purchased from George F. Barber and Co. It features a chimney that takes up an entire corner of the main facade, a stone arch that surrounds the first-floor window with leaded glass in a sunflower pattern, a wrap-around porch with a corner turret, and a three-story octagonal tower behind it. Jayne gave the house as a wedding gift to his daughter, Ella, and her husband, John Granger Lindsay. The Lindsays moved to Chicago in 1913. It was the Theta Xi Fraternity Xi Chapter house from 1914-1915. The house was subsequently divided into apartments, and in 2005 became a 10-bedroom unit of the River City Housing Collective. It is perhaps most famous as the model for the boarding house in the comic strip Bloom County, and where the strip is partially set. Berkeley Breathed, who wrote the comic strip, called the house one of “the ugliest houses in the five-state area... Six different architectural styles in one house is a milestone at least and at most a landmark to bad taste”.

The Woodlawn Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 14 resources, all of which are contributing buildings. The district is largely on Woodlawn Street, a gravel dead-end extension of Iowa Avenue. The eastern terminus of Iowa Avenue was originally planned to be a block to the west and was to be the location of the Governor's Mansion, but it was never built. The Old Capitol is on western terminus of the same street. The district is an enclave of upper-middle-class houses on Woodlawn and Evans Streets. Nine of the houses were built in the late 19th century, two were built in the 1920s, and two were built in mid-20th century. There is also a four-story Tudor Revival apartment building on Evans Street that was built in 1926. All of the buildings are located on deep set-backs on large landscaped lots that provide seclusion and cohesion, which is what gives them their significance. The most prominent house is a Queen Anne style home at 1036 Woodlawn Street.

The Oakes-Wood House, also known as the Grant Wood House, is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. Nicholas Oakes, who established one of the first brickyards in town, built this house in 1858. The two-story brick Italianate structure features a T-shape floor plan, low gable roof, bracketed eaves, and three brick chimneys. Its most important association is regionalist artist Grant Wood, who lived here from 1936 and until his death in 1942. He restored the house during his ownership. The paintings he completed here include: Portrait of Nan (1938), Haying (1939), New Road (1939), Parson Weems' Fable–Washington Cherry Tree (1939) and Adolescence (1940). He also experimented with lithography and among the prints he created here include: Seedtime and Harvest, January, and December Afternoon. Also on display is a lithograph by James Claussen who was born in Iowa City. Wood taught painting at the University of Iowa's School of Art while he lived here, and wrote Revolt Against the City in which he stated his beliefs in the value and importance of regionalism in art. The house was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. In 2002 it was included as a contributing property in the Longfellow Historic District.

The Iowa Federation of Colored Women's Clubs (IFCWC) was an umbrella organization serving African-American women's clubs in Iowa. The motto of IFCWC was "Sowing Seeds of Kindness", and the organization was affiliated with the National Association of Colored Women. The club produced a journal called the Iowa Colored Woman. IFCWC sent delegates to represent the state at national conventions and opportunities such as "Colored Women's day" at the 1939 New York World's Fair. The IFCWC is also known for creating a black women's dormitory for the University of Iowa before the school was fully integrated. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Thomas C. Carson House is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It is currently in use as the sorority house of the University of Iowa chapter of Alpha Phi, and is thus also known as the Carson-Alpha Phi House. Carson was one of the passengers on the first train to enter Iowa City. He went to become a prominent merchant and banker in the community, and was involved with the local utility companies that his sons controlled. He had this house built in 1875 in Second Empire style. The three-story frame house features a mansard roof with a concave slope, and elaborate dormers. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In 1997 it was included as a contributing property in the College Green Historic District.

The Muscatine Avenue Moffitt Cottage Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places district that includes five stone cottages in Iowa City epitomizing the eccentric vernacular architectural style of Howard Moffitt. Moffitt constructed more than 100 houses in Iowa City and Coralville, Iowa, and a few in Citrus City, Texas. These small houses represent one of the regional 20th-century vernacular architectural styles in the United States. Howard Moffitt was a prolific builder.

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic African American congregation and building in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. The congregation was established in 1868 mostly by free people of color from the south and the rest from the north. James W. Howard, a member of the congregation, bought property in a recent addition to the city and sold the southern half to the church for $50. This white frame church was built on the property the same year. Iowa City has always had a small African American community and over the years the congregation grew and declined in numbers and in finances. The original church, which is 600 square feet (56 m2) and has room for 50 people, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. The congregation outgrew the small church and a new 4,000-square-foot (370 m2) sanctuary was built in 2010 that holds three times the current congregation's size.

The South Summit Street District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 50 contributing buildings, most of which were built between 1860 and 1910. The west side of the 300 block formed part of Iowa City's original boundary. A 6-foot (1.8 m) limestone obelisk at 331 South Summit marks the original southeast corner of the city. Although nothing is left of it, Camp Pope, a training camp for the Union Army during the American Civil War, was located in this area in 1862. Three Iowa Infantry regiments, the 22nd, 28th and 40th, trained here. The street itself was created in the 1850s and the 1860s, and it was incorporated into the city in 1881. The neighborhood is a park-like setting with mature trees and large homes that sit back from the street. A large variety of architectural styles are represented in the neighborhood.

The Longfellow Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. At the time of its nomination, it consisted of 355 resources, which included 250 contributing buildings, 103 non-contributing buildings, and two non-contributing structures. As the University of Iowa expanded in the early 20th-century new sections were being added to the city. The Longfellow neighborhood, named after the local elementary school completed in 1919, was part of this expansion. The northern part of the neighborhood along East Court Street developed in the 19th century because the street connected the city center to the Muscatine road. The rest of the neighborhood was platted on farm land in 1908 and 1914. A trolley line was completed to the area in 1910, leading to the creation of suburban development. Most of the houses in the neighborhood were completed between 1910 and 1940. The structures are small to medium-sized and reflect the styles that were popular at the time, particularly the American Craftsman. Two architect designed buildings were works of two architects that are not well known: O.H. Carpenter for the E.T. Davis house on Court Street, and G.L. Lockart for Longfellow School. The Oakes-Wood House (1858), one of the older houses in the neighborhood that was owned by artist Grant Wood, was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Melrose Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 134 resources, which included 112 contributing buildings, one contributing site, 20 non-contributing buildings, and one non-contributing structure. This neighborhood first developed as a sparsely populated rural area, and between World War I and World War II developed into an automobile suburb. It grew along with the University of Iowa when it expanded to the west side of the Iowa River, and it borders the large University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics complex. Among the prominent people who lived here was Howard Jones who coached the Iowa football team from 1916 to 1923. Other prominent residents included professors and local professionals and politicians. The houses in the neighborhood vary in size from large multi-story, ornamented structures to those that are more modest in scale. They also reflect the styles that were popular in the city at the time it was transformed from a largely rural area to a suburban area. The street patterns vary from curvilinear, to cul-de-sac, to grid patterns and a major town and country highway. The district also includes Brookland Park. The Billingsley-Hills House (1870) and the A.W. Pratt House (1885) were individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The College Green Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 47 resources, which included 37 contributing buildings, one contributing site, and nine non-contributing buildings. This neighborhood in the central part of the city surrounds a square-block park called College Green, from which it derives its name. The park, which is the contributing site, is found on the earliest maps of Iowa City. While the earliest houses in the district were built in the 1860s, most were constructed between 1890 and 1920. No one architectural style dominates here, but the district contains a variety of styles that were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is one of three areas in the city where the fraternities and sororities associated with the University of Iowa are located. The Thomas C. Carson House (1875), which now houses a sorority, is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
