There are also ancient remains on the island, mainly stone circles from temporary fishing camps. On the northern part of the island there are good fishing opportunities. Tjolmen beach on the southern part of the island is the most popular for swimming.

Öckerö Municipality (Öckerö kommun) is a municipality in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Öckerö on the main island, which is also called Öckerö. The municipality consists of islands in the Northern Gothenburg Archipelago just outside Gothenburg. With a total area of 26.03 km2 it is one of the smallest municipalities of Sweden. The municipality is one of very few in Sweden which has not been amalgamated and thus still has the same area as the unit formed out of a parish (socken) by the first local government acts of 1862. In the period 1915–1959 there were a number of municipalsamhällen (a sort of boroughs within a rural municipality handling matters of urban character) in the municipality.

Trälen was a reality show on Swedish TV4 and was broadcast in the autumn of 2006. The show, where people from different social classes and parts of Sweden lived together on an island for 40 days, didn't meet the expected success and received low ratings. There were initially twelve participants and every time a bell rang they decided which one of them who was next to leave. The show was filmed on the small island Trälen in the archipelago of Gothenburg. Another season of the show is not planned. Instead a housing development is planned for the area. The winner of Trälen was Serhan Erdal, who won 500,000 SEK (about USD 70,000).
