High Roding

Baconend Green is a hamlet in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is within the parish of Great Canfield.

Great Canfield Castle lies in the small village of Great Canfield, 3 miles (5 km) south-west of Great Dunmow in Essex, England: grid reference TL595179. The lords of Canfield, the de Veres, built a motte and bailey castle on low ground near the River Roding, probably in the late 11th or early 12th century. The keep was constructed of timber. In the 1130s-1140s Aubrey de Vere II or his son Aubrey III the first Earl of Oxford may have diverted a tributary of the river to flood the ditch around the motte; the water was managed by a dam system. Excavations suggest that the moat was 20' 7" deep, 11' lower than the water table.The Vere lords held at Canfield by two feudal tenures in the Domesday Book of 1086: as tenant-in-chief of the crown for two hides and as tenant of Count Alan of Brittany, lord of Richmond for one hide. Over time, the Richmond lordship seems to have been forgotten and the Vere Earls of Oxford came to hold all three hides of the king. The estate's manor rolls survive from 14 December, 1346, into the 16th century. Only the earthworks now remain.

The village, which sits at the south-east edge of its civil parish, is approximately 3 miles (5 km) south-west from the small town of Great Dunmow, and 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west from High Roding. The civil parish contains the hamlets and small settlements of Hope End Green, Hellmans Cross, Bacon End, Baconend Green, and Puttocks End. The River Roding defines the parish border at the south-east, and for 1 mile cuts through the parish before providing part of the north-east border.

High Easter is a village and a civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. The village is 7 miles (11 km) northwest from the city of and county town of Chelmsford. The parish includes the hamlets of Bishop's Green and Stagden Cross. Parsonage Brook, at 450 yards (400 m) north from the village flows northeast to southwest, meeting at the west of the parish the River Can, whose chief source is at the north, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) from the village, near Bishop's Green. High Easter is part of 'The Easters', an area adjacent to The Rodings. The population of the parish at the 2011 Census was 754.

Little Canfield is a village and a civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. The village is situated the B1256 road, near the A120 road and the villages of Smiths Green and Takeley. As of 2021, its population is approximately 1,350. Little Canfield is in the Takeley and the Canfields ward of Uttlesford, and the Dunmow division of Essex County Council. The village is currently expanding as housing developments are being built around the area. It has a public house, the Lion and Lamb.

The Rodings are a group of eight villages in the upper part of the River Roding and the west of Essex, England, the largest group in the country to bear a common name. The Rodings do not lie within a single district in the county; they are arranged around the tripoint of the administrative areas of Chelmsford, Uttlesford and Epping Forest. An alternative arcane name, linked to the Middle English Essex dialect, was The Roothings.

Clatterford End is a hamlet partly in the High Easter civil parish of the Uttlesford district, and partly in the Good Easter parish of the Chelmsford district, of Essex, England. The hamlet is 1 mile (1.6 km) south from High Easter village, and 6 miles (10 km) northwest from the city and county town of Chelmsford.

Easton Lodge railway station was located to the west of Great Dunmow, Essex, near Easton Lodge. The station on the Bishop's Stortford to Braintree branch line (Engineer's Line Reference BSB). The station closed in 1952, with the line being used for freight until it was closed in 1972. It was described in the Railway Magazine: The Earl of Warwick has also the pleasure of possessing a railway station of his own. It is attached to his Essex residence of Easton Lodge, and bears the same name as the house. Of course, it is on the line owned by the Great Eastern Railway, and a short distance from Dunmow. It is perhaps as much used as any really "private" station, for the Warwick family spend much time every year at Easton, and keep constant company there. The station was built in 1895, significantly later than the rest of the line, and was funded by the Earl and Countess of Warwick at a cost of £140 plus £52 annually for 10 years for upkeep; they also allowed it to be used by the general public. It has now been demolished but the crossing keeper's cottage remains. The adjacent land is now a banana ripening depot.
