Nordsternpark

Schwarzbach is a river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a left tributary of the Emscher.

Horst Castle (German: Schloss Horst), located in the Horst district of Gelsenkirchen, is recognized as one of Westphalia's oldest and most significant Renaissance buildings. During its construction in the 16th century, it ranked among the largest four-winged castle complexes north of the Alps, significantly influencing the architectural style of the Lippe Renaissance. On December 15, 1983, it was declared a listed building.

The Gelsenberg Lager was a subcamp of the concentration camp Buchenwald in Gelsenkirchen-Horst. About 2000 Hungarian Jewish women were held in this subcamp, and were given the task of clearing the area of the Gelsenberg Benzin AG of rubble in the summer 1944. Approximately 150 of them were killed during heavy bombing attacks on the hydrogenation plant in September 1944. A few badly injured survivors were taken to Gelsenkirchen hospitals. After the dissolution of the camp in the middle of September 1944, the remaining Hungarian Jewish women in the camp were sent to the subcamp Soemmerda in Thuringia and the other women were shifted to Essen into another subcamp of the KZ Buchenwald The Gelsenzentrum, a center for urban and contemporary history in Gelsenkirchen, contains documents concerning the history of the subcamp Gelsenberglager.

Mathias-Stinnes-Stadion is a multi-use stadium in Essen, Germany. It is currently used mostly for football matches. The stadium has a capacity of 12,000 people. In 1956 it was used as venue for the first unofficial fixture of a German female national team.

The Rhine–Herne Canal (German: Rhein-Herne-Kanal) is a 45.6-kilometre-long (28.3 mi) transportation canal in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with five canal locks. The canal was built over a period of eight years (5 April 1906 – 14 July 1914) and connects the harbour in Duisburg on the Rhine (51°26′59″N 6°46′1″E) with the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Henrichenburg (51°37′1″N 7°19′19″E), following the valley of the Emscher. It was widened in the 1980s. The Rhein-Herne canal ship was designed specifically for this canal; normally of about 1300–1350 ton capacity, it has a maximum draft of 2.50 metres (8.2 ft), a length of approximately 80 metres (260 ft), and maximum beam of 9.50 metres (31.2 ft). Originally the Rhine-Herne canal ended in Herne, where it met a branch of the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal running from Henrichenburg to Herne, the intersection situated just above the East Herne lock. After the closure of the last part of the Henrichenburg to Herne canal, the Henrichenburg-Herne section of the Dortmund-Ems was added to the Rhein-Herne Canal.

Trabrennbahn Gelsenkirchen, also known as GelsenTrabPark, is located in the Feldmark quarter of Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The track, built in 1912, is used for harness racing and is the largest harness racing track in Germany, with a capacity for 30,000 spectators. The grandstand was built in 1965 and expanded in 1979, owns 9,600 seats on four floors and has a length of 112 meters. In 2002 the grandstand was renovated and a VIP-lounge called "Abano As Club" was installed. The track length is 1,200 meters and it is a right-handed course. The highlight of the racing year is the "Bild-Pokal" on 1 May. Every year, a charity race day called "Schalke hilft!" is held in cooperation with the world famous local football club FC Schalke 04.

Essen Zollverein Nord is a railway station situated in close proximity to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex on the Duisburg–Dortmund railway situated in Essen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 6 station. It was originally named Zollverein, renamed Caternberg in 1897, Caternberg Süd between 1897 and 1905, Katernberg Süd between 1905 and 1912, Essen-Katernberg Süd in 1949 and Essen-Zollverein Nord on 13 December 2009. A station building was built in 1897, but was demolished between 1960 and 1990.It is served by Regionalbahn lines RB32 (Rhein-Emscher-Bahn) and RB35 (Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn), Essen tramway 107 (Gelsenkirchen Hbf + Hbf – Bredeney) and by bus routes 170 (Schonnebeck – Kray – Steele + Altenessen - Borbeck) and 183 (Katernberger Markt + Altenessen – Karlsplatz) operated by Ruhrbahn.

The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (German Zeche Zollverein) is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The first coal mine on the premises was founded in 1847, and mining activities took place from 1851 until December 23, 1986. For decades, starting in the late 1950s, the two parts of the site, Zollverein Coal Mine and Zollverein Coking Plant (erected 1957−1961, closed on June 30, 1993), ranked among the largest of their kinds in Europe. Shaft 12, built in the New Objectivity style, was opened in 1932 and is considered an architectural and technical masterpiece, earning it a reputation as the "most beautiful coal mine in the world".Because of its architecture and testimony to the development of heavy industry in Europe, the industrial complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 14, 2001, and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

Zeche Carl (Carl Mine) is a cultural centre set up by Essen Council in a former coal mine.

Altenessen Mitte (Altenessen Centre) is an underground station of the Essen Stadtbahn in Altenessen, Essen. Lines U11 and U17 call the station as well as buses 170, 172, E84, E86, and NE15. It is located below Altenessener Straße between Vogelheimer Straße and Winkhausstraße. The station has two tracks. There is a lift in operation.The station opened on 30 September 2001. The shopping mall of AlleeCenter is located nearby, also Zeche Carl cultural centre.

The Ruhr Museum, formerly the Ruhrland Museum, is a diverse natural history and cultural history museum for the Ruhrgebiet in Essen, Germany. The sponsor is the Stiftung Ruhr Museum (Ruhr Museum Foundation). Director since 2012 is the historian Heinrich Theodor Grütter.

Karlsplatz is an underground station of the Essen Stadtbahn in Altenessen, Essen. Lines U11 and U17 call the station as well as buses 172, 173, and 183. It is located below Altenessener Straße at the crossroads of Johanniskirchstraße. The station has two tracks. There is a lift in operation. Line U17 terminates here. The station opened on 30 September 2001. The Marienhospital is located nearby.
