Essen Zollverein Nord is a railway station situated in close proximity to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex on the Duisburg–Dortmund railway situated in Essen in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 6 station. It was originally named Zollverein, renamed Caternberg in 1897, Caternberg Süd between 1897 and 1905, Katernberg Süd between 1905 and 1912, Essen-Katernberg Süd in 1949 and Essen-Zollverein Nord on 13 December 2009. A station building was built in 1897, but was demolished between 1960 and 1990.It is served by Regionalbahn lines RB32 (Rhein-Emscher-Bahn) and RB35 (Emscher-Niederrhein-Bahn), Essen tramway 107 (Gelsenkirchen Hbf + Hbf – Bredeney) and by bus routes 170 (Schonnebeck – Kray – Steele + Altenessen - Borbeck) and 183 (Katernberger Markt + Altenessen – Karlsplatz) operated by Ruhrbahn.

The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex (German Zeche Zollverein) is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The first coal mine on the premises was founded in 1847, and mining activities took place from 1851 until December 23, 1986. For decades, starting in the late 1950s, the two parts of the site, Zollverein Coal Mine and Zollverein Coking Plant (erected 1957−1961, closed on June 30, 1993), ranked among the largest of their kinds in Europe. Shaft 12, built in the New Objectivity style, was opened in 1932 and is considered an architectural and technical masterpiece, earning it a reputation as the "most beautiful coal mine in the world".Because of its architecture and testimony to the development of heavy industry in Europe, the industrial complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 14, 2001, and is one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

The Rhine–Herne Canal (German: Rhein-Herne-Kanal) is a 45.6-kilometre-long (28.3 mi) transportation canal in the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with five canal locks. The canal was built over a period of eight years (5 April 1906 – 14 July 1914) and connects the harbour in Duisburg on the Rhine (51°26′59″N 6°46′1″E) with the Dortmund-Ems Canal near Henrichenburg (51°37′1″N 7°19′19″E), following the valley of the Emscher. It was widened in the 1980s. The Rhein-Herne canal ship was designed specifically for this canal; normally of about 1300–1350 ton capacity, it has a maximum draft of 2.50 metres (8.2 ft), a length of approximately 80 metres (260 ft), and maximum beam of 9.50 metres (31.2 ft). Originally the Rhine-Herne canal ended in Herne, where it met a branch of the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal running from Henrichenburg to Herne, the intersection situated just above the East Herne lock. After the closure of the last part of the Henrichenburg to Herne canal, the Henrichenburg-Herne section of the Dortmund-Ems was added to the Rhein-Herne Canal.

The Ruhr Museum, formerly the Ruhrland Museum, is a diverse natural history and cultural history museum for the Ruhrgebiet in Essen, Germany. The sponsor is the Stiftung Ruhr Museum (Ruhr Museum Foundation). Director since 2012 is the historian Heinrich Theodor Grütter.

Nordsternpark (lit. North Star Park) is a park in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. It is located on the compound of former mine of Zeche Nordstern. After the closure of the mine in 1993 the area was redeveloped. In 1997, the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Exhibition) took place here.An amphitheater is located near the canal of Rhein-Herne-Kanal, where music festivals and other cultural events are taking place, among them the annual Rock Hard Festival. The park is part of the European Garden Heritage Network and the Industrial Heritage Trail.

Glückauf-Kampfbahn is a multi-use stadium in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was initially used as the stadium of FC Schalke 04 matches. It was replaced by Parkstadion in 1973. The capacity of the stadium is 11,000 spectators.

Sportpark am Hallo is a facility consisting of an indoor sporting arena and an outdoor stadium located in Essen, Germany. The capacity of the arena is 2,500 people, while the stadium can accommodate 3,800 spectators. It is home to the Assindia Cardinals (American Football), ETB Essen (basketball) and TUSEM Essen (handball).

Gelsenkirchen-Rotthausen is a railway station on the Essen–Gelsenkirchen railway situated in Gelsenkirchen in western Germany. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 6 station. It is served by Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn line S 2 and by bus route 381 (Gelsenkirchen – Erle – Resse/Buer) operated by BOGESTRA.

Musiktheater im Revier (MiR) (Music Theatre in the Ruhr) is the venue for performing opera, operetta, musical theatre and ballet in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. It opened on 15 December 1959; it is listed since 1997 as a protected cultural monument. The building offers two performance spaces: the Large House (Großes Haus) with 1,008 seats and about 200 performances per year, and the Small House (Kleines Haus) with 336 seats and about 120 annual performances. In contrast to the building's outside cubic appearance, the auditoria use a more curved design.

Gelsenkirchen-Schalke is a quarter of Gelsenkirchen. In its current boundaries, it has an area of 2.968 square kilometres and 21,510 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2022). Thanks to the local football club FC Schalke 04, the district is at least as well known nationally as the city of Gelsenkirchen. However, Schalke 04 has played its matches in the Erle district since 1973 (first in the Parkstadion, since 2001 in the Arena AufSchalke).

The Hans-Sachs-Haus (HSH) is a landmark building in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, constructed between 1924 and 1927. Named after the Meistersinger Hans Sachs, the building was designed by Essen-based architect Alfred Fischer. The outside of the modernist building represents Brick Expressionism, New Objectivity (German: Neue Sachlichkeit) and Streamline Moderne, as well as Bauhaus influences which also characterize its interior. The building covers a floor area of about 27,500 square metres (296,000 sq ft). It was initially designated as multi-function centre to house offices, a hotel and restaurant, shops, a large concert hall with one of the largest concert organs in Europe (92 stops, built by Walcker Orgelbau) at that time. The building was partially destroyed by bombing during World War II but was reconstructed by 1953. Until 1984, a paternoster lift by Schindler operated in the building.Between 2001 and 2013, the building was subject to a major reconstruction, redevelopment and refurbishment at the cost of 69 million euro.The building is currently used as the town hall for the Gelsenkirchen city council and about 450 of its employees. The Hans-Sachs-Haus and the nearby Musiktheater im Revier are part of the Industrial Heritage Trail.

The Gelsenberg Lager was a subcamp of the concentration camp Buchenwald in Gelsenkirchen-Horst. About 2000 Hungarian Jewish women were held in this subcamp, and were given the task of clearing the area of the Gelsenberg Benzin AG of rubble in the summer 1944. Approximately 150 of them were killed during heavy bombing attacks on the hydrogenation plant in September 1944. A few badly injured survivors were taken to Gelsenkirchen hospitals. After the dissolution of the camp in the middle of September 1944, the remaining Hungarian Jewish women in the camp were sent to the subcamp Soemmerda in Thuringia and the other women were shifted to Essen into another subcamp of the KZ Buchenwald The Gelsenzentrum, a center for urban and contemporary history in Gelsenkirchen, contains documents concerning the history of the subcamp Gelsenberglager.
