Kirklington Hall Research Station

Kirklington is a village and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. The population as of the 2011 census was 400, falling to 388 at the 2021 census. Kirklington lies on the A617 road between Newark (9½ miles to the east) and Mansfield (10 miles to the west). Kirklington once had a railway station on the Mansfield-Southwell line; it was closed to passenger traffic in 1929 and goods trains in 1964. The former trackbed is now the Southwell Trail footpath. The place-name Kirklington seems to contain an Old English personal name, Cyrtla, + tun (Old English), an enclosure; a farmstead; a village; an estate.., so 'Cyrtla's farm or settlement'. It might instead stem from Kirk-, an element found in a number of place names in the United Kingdom, deriving from kirk (Scottish), a general assembly; a church. Southwell was a rural district in Nottinghamshire, England from 1894 to 1974. It was created by the Local Government Act 1894 as a successor to the Southwell rural sanitary district. It was amended in 1935 under a County Review Order by ceding a few parishes to the Newark Rural District and taking in a few from the disbanded Skegby Rural District. It was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, and was combined with the area of the Newark RD, and Newark borough to form the district of Newark and Sherwood.

Halam is a village and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England, with a population of 372 in 2001, increasing to 426 at the 2011 Census. It is located to the west of Southwell.The parish church, which was built in the 11th–12th centuries, is dedicated to St Michael the Archangel. At the north end of the village is an 18th-century water mill, three storeys with a lean-to wheelhouse and adjoining cottage. There is a public house called the Waggon & Horses, which is the first carbon-neutral pub in the United Kingdom and home of the Nottinghamshire Pie, a dish created by chef Roy Wood. The school is called Halam Church of England Primary School. Halam is the birthplace of travel writer and academic Robert Macfarlane.

Winkburn Hall is a Grade I listed country house which stands at the corner of an estate a few miles north-east of Southwell, Nottinghamshire, off the Hockerton to Kirklington road. It was built for the Burnell family circa 1700 as a two-storey mansion in red brick with ashlar dressing and a hipped slate roof. The original mansard roof has since been converted to an additional third storey.
