Kirklington is a village and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. The population as of the 2011 census was 400, falling to 388 at the 2021 census. Kirklington lies on the A617 road between Newark (9½ miles to the east) and Mansfield (10 miles to the west). Kirklington once had a railway station on the Mansfield-Southwell line; it was closed to passenger traffic in 1929 and goods trains in 1964. The former trackbed is now the Southwell Trail footpath. The place-name Kirklington seems to contain an Old English personal name, Cyrtla, + tun (Old English), an enclosure; a farmstead; a village; an estate.., so 'Cyrtla's farm or settlement'. It might instead stem from Kirk-, an element found in a number of place names in the United Kingdom, deriving from kirk (Scottish), a general assembly; a church. This may refer to St. Swithun's Church, the parish church located in Kirklington.

Edingley is a village in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 390, increasing to 443 at the 2011 Census. It is located 3 miles north-west of Southwell. The name Edingley contains the Old English personal name, Eddi, + lēah (Old English), a forest, wood, glade, clearing; (later) a pasture, meadow.'...so 'Eddi's wood/clearing'.The parish church of St Giles is Norman, almost completely rebuilt in 1890. It is a largely agricultural parish with a public house, The Old Reindeer, and a residential home, Edingley Lodge (formerly Highfields). Its allotments are historic and the plot originally held the poor house and is the same plot as in the enclosure act of 1781 and formally surveyed in 1899.The village school was built in 1911–12 and closed in the 1960s. The private Edgehill school took over the building and extended northwards with a series of temporary buildings. This closed in 1996. The same building, known as the Old Schoolroom, is now the village community hall. A recently completed extension has greatly improved its function and amenity, giving two function rooms, indoor W.C.s and a kitchen, which are all universally accessible.

Halam is a village and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England, with a population of 372 in 2001, increasing to 426 at the 2011 Census. It is located to the west of Southwell.The parish church, which was built in the 11th–12th centuries, is dedicated to St Michael the Archangel. At the north end of the village is an 18th-century water mill, three storeys with a lean-to wheelhouse and adjoining cottage. There is a public house called the Waggon & Horses, which is the first carbon-neutral pub in the United Kingdom and home of the Nottinghamshire Pie, a dish created by chef Roy Wood. The school is called Halam Church of England Primary School. Halam is the birthplace of travel writer and academic Robert Macfarlane.

Southwell was a rural district in Nottinghamshire, England from 1894 to 1974. It was created by the Local Government Act 1894 as a successor to the Southwell rural sanitary district. It was amended in 1935 under a County Review Order by ceding a few parishes to the Newark Rural District and taking in a few from the disbanded Skegby Rural District. It was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, and was combined with the area of the Newark RD, and Newark borough to form the district of Newark and Sherwood.

Southwell ( SOWTH-wəl, -⁠wel, locally SUDH-əl) is a minster and market town in the district of Newark and Sherwood in Nottinghamshire, England. It is home to the grade-I listed Southwell Minster, the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. The population of the town was recorded at 7,491 in the 2021 census. The town is on the River Greet and is located geographically 9 miles (14 km) west of Newark on Trent, 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Nottingham, 13 miles (21 km) southeast of Mansfield and 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Worksop.

Farnsfield is a large village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire in Sherwood Forest. It is in the local government district of Newark and Sherwood. The population of the civil parish as at the 2011 Census was 2,731, an increase from 2,681 in the United Kingdom Census 2001. The village lies in a predominantly farming area. There is no major industry or employer within Farnsfield. The majority of residents of working age commute to work, mostly to Nottingham, Mansfield or Newark. Farnsfield's facilities include a small Co-op supermarket and Post Office, a village bakery, butcher, greengrocer, and other small shops. The village has two churches (Anglican and Methodist), a large primary school, and two public houses (The Plough Inn and The Lion). The Southwell Trail, a former railway line dating to 1842 and now adapted as a multi-user route for foot, cycle and horseback use, passes immediately to the north of the village. A free car park for the trail is located off Station Lane. In 1944, during World War II, an RAF Halifax bomber MZ519-LKU crashed on the south side of the village. All on board were killed. The site of the crash has a large memorial.
