Winkburn is a small village and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district, in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located north-west of Southwell and north-west of Newark. The parish church of St John of Jerusalem and Winkburn Hall are both Grade I listed buildings.

Hockerton is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire. It is 2 miles from the town of Southwell on the A617 between Newark and Mansfield. Fewer than 60 houses are situated around the church, the Spread Eagle pub and village hall. The population at the 2011 Census was 146. The local properties range from the carbon neutral housing of the Hockerton Housing Project to converted barns, 1960s and 1970s housing together with much older houses and a 19th-century Rectory. The parish church of St Nicholas is Norman with an aisleless nave and a 14th-century chancel. Part of the village contains Hockerton Housing Project. The Hockerton Housing Project is the UK's first earth sheltered, self-sufficient ecological housing development. A group of residents formed an Industrial and Provident Society (IPS) called Sustainable Hockerton Limited in 2009. The Society has installed a wind turbine that generates electricity equal to that used by the village. Any surplus is distributed in the parish to promote sustainable development. The place-name Hockerton seems to contain an Old English word for a hill, hocer, + tun (Old English), an enclosure; a farmstead; a village; an estate.., so 'hill or hump settlement'.

Southwell was a rural district in Nottinghamshire, England from 1894 to 1974. It was created by the Local Government Act 1894 as a successor to the Southwell rural sanitary district. It was amended in 1935 under a County Review Order by ceding a few parishes to the Newark Rural District and taking in a few from the disbanded Skegby Rural District. It was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, and was combined with the area of the Newark RD, and Newark borough to form the district of Newark and Sherwood.

The district also includes the towns of Southwell and Ollerton along with a large rural area containing many villages. Much of the district lies within the ancient Sherwood Forest and there are also extensive forestry plantations in the area. The neighbouring districts are Rushcliffe, Gedling, Ashfield, Mansfield, Bassetlaw, West Lindsey, North Kesteven and South Kesteven.

The Hockerton Housing Project is a small community of five earth sheltered homes on the outskirts of Hockerton, Nottinghamshire, UK. The houses were designed by ‘green’ architects Professor Brenda Vale and Dr Robert Vale. Low carbon living is facilitated through the use of renewable energy, the water system, food grown on site, and the community's approach to work and transport.The homes were completed in September 1998 after three years of planning and 18 months of construction, at a cost of about £65,000. Two homes have since changed ownership on the open property market.

Maplebeck is a village and civil parish in Nottinghamshire, England and located 6 miles north of the town of Southwell. It is surrounded by the villages and parishes of Caunton, Eakring, Kneesall, Kersall and Winkburn. It is one of only five villages in England to have a church dedicated to St Radegund and it is also one of only 51 Thankful Villages in England and Wales – those rare places that were spared fatalities in the Great War of 1914 to 1918. The parish church of St Radegund was extensively restored in 1898. 106 residents were reported at the 2021 census.

Maythorne is a hamlet in Nottinghamshire, England. It is located 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west of Southwell, and is within the Southwell civil parish. The hamlet lies on the Southwell Trail, a multi-use trail linking Southwell with Bilsthorpe along the route of the former Rolleston Junction to Mansfield railway line, and the Robin Hood Way, a waymarked long-distance footpath that links many places with connections to Robin Hood. The hamlet grew up around a pair of mills on the River Greet, and has a total of seven listed buildings or structures, including both mills, the manager's house, and worker's cottages. The mills were built in 1795 to supply cotton yarn to the framework knitting industry. The firm of Messrs. Bean and Johnson altered it in the early nineteenth century, after which silk thread was produced. By 1838 there were 70 employees at the mills, and the hamlet included cottages, a general store, a public house and a mission hall. Willow for making baskets was grown in osier beds, and hops were also cultivated. The mills were used as billets for soldiers during the Second World War, by which time their industrial function had ceased. The mill buildings have subsequently been converted into flats, with some of the outbuildings used as industrial workshops. There is also a caravan park and fishing lake, together with an award-winning gluten-free tea room.
