Chislet

Upstreet is a village in the civil parish of Chislet in Kent, England. It is in the local government district of Canterbury, and the electoral ward of Marshside. It is about 62 miles away from London.Upstreet is a ribbon development along the A28 road. The majority of houses are new and dating from the 1950s onwards. However, there are a number of older houses such as the Grade II listed building 'Grove Court' or the Grade I listed 'Upstreet Farmhouse', which was built in the 16th century and stands in an acre of its own land. It had notable different purposes over the years and is known to be haunted. Also listed are 'Hamilton's' and 'The Vision House' (No89 and No94)Upstreet was mentioned in the 1830s Swing Riots, when a widespread uprising by agricultural workers in southern and eastern England occurred, in protest at agricultural mechanisation and harsh working conditions. Several fires were carried at different farms as part of the protests.Close to Upstreet is the Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve, Grove Ferry Picnic Area and the River Stour. Also the Saxon Shore Way (long-distance footpath) also passes the village between Chislet and Stourmouth. Upstreet has a few services (a shop, two elderly care homes, one pub and one car sales lot), the garage having closed through 2015. The number of services is declining due to rising car ownership. For example, 45 years ago there was a railway station, haberdashery, greengrocer's, butcher's, baker's etc. However now there is no railway station and the shop consolidates the uses of a post office, greengrocer's, haberdashery, baker's, butcher's, etc. all under one roof. The pub is worked at by many of the locals, including a few teenagers from the village, most notably waitress Moon, and is owned by another of the locals. There is a karaoke machine and jukebox, and a quiz night on Thursdays at 8pm. The pub is a main place where locals from Sturry to Minster can all socialise, and catch up. Marshside is a hamlet in the county of Kent, England. It is in the parish of Chislet alongside the Chislet Marshes southeast of Herne Bay.

Grove Ferry and Upstreet was a railway station in east Kent. It was opened by South Eastern Railway (SER), on the Ashford to Ramsgate (via Canterbury West) line between Sturry station and Minster station.

The Grove Ferry Picnic Area is near Upstreet, in Kent, England, on the site of an old hand-drawn ferry that once crossed the River Stour here. The area is maintained and managed by Kent County Council. It is beside the Grove Ferry Public House, built in 1831 and now managed by Shepherd Neame.

Highstead is a village near Chislet, off the A299 road, in the Canterbury District, in the English county of Kent. It is near the town of Herne Bay. Highstead is known for its iron-age pottery findings.

Ford Palace was a residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury at Ford, about 6.6 miles (10.6 km) north-east of Canterbury and 2.6 miles (4.2 km) south-east of Herne Bay, in the parish of Hoath in the county of Kent in south-eastern England. The earliest structural evidence for the palace dates it to about 1300, and the earliest written references to it date to the 14th century. However, its site may have been in use for similar purposes since the Anglo-Saxon period, and it may have been the earliest such residence outside Canterbury. Archbishop John Morton (1486–1500) rebuilt the palace, adding a five-storey tower of brick, and Thomas Cranmer was visited there by King Henry VIII in 1544. In 1573 Archbishop Matthew Parker proposed to demolish it, but it survived to be surveyed in 1647 by commissioners acting on the instructions of the Long Parliament, which had acquired it from the Church of England. The survey found the palace to be in fair condition, but it was largely demolished and the materials sold by order of Parliament in 1658, while the see of Canterbury was vacant. Its site was returned to the Church after the Restoration. In 1661, what remained of it was described as so ruined that its chapel was in use as a barn.

Grays is a hamlet within the civil parish of Chislet, near Canterbury, Kent. It is located to the south of the A299 road and is located on the North Stream, a tributary of the River Wantsum. The hamlet consists of a small collection of houses (Little Grays) and the moated Grays Farm. On the A299 is the large public house named the Roman Galley.

Stodmarsh SSSI is a 623.2-hectare (1,540-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest near Stodmarsh, north-east of Canterbury in Kent. Parts of it are a Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I, a National Nature Reserve, a Ramsar internationally important wetland site, a Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds.

Hawthorn Corner is a hamlet near Herne Bay in Kent, England. It is part of the Herne and Broomfield civil parish and consists of a few houses and a sewage works sandwiched between the Thanet Way and the railway to Ramsgate. It is in the Reculver ward of Herne Bay.

Chislet windmill was a Grade II listed smock mill in Chislet, Kent, England. It was built in 1744 and burnt down on 15 October 2005.
