It encompasses 17 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure in the crossroads community of Washburn. It developed after 1915, and includes notable examples of Classical Revival style architecture. The principal historic buildings in the district are the Edgar Nollie Washburn House, two rental dwellings, a barn, the Washburn store, the Washburn Funeral Home, and Washburn-Davis House.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, with a boundary increase in 2006.

It encompasses 115 contributing buildings and 3 contributing structures in a predominantly residential section of Forest City. The district developed after 1914, and includes notable examples of Colonial Revival and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Located in the district is the separately listed T. Max Watson House. Other notable buildings include the Brown-Griffith House (1923), Dr. W. C. Bostic Jr. House (1926), John W. and Bertha M. Dalton House (1939), J. H. Thomas House (1922), and the Marley Sigmon House (1962).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

T. Max Watson House is a historic home located at Forest City, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It built in 1939, and is a two-story, five-bay, central passage plan, Georgian Revival style white brick dwelling. It has a side-gable roof covered with interlocking red clay tiles. The front facade features a central projecting bay, one-story portico supported by three Ionic order columns, and second floor Palladian window.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. It is located in the East Main Street Historic District.

Cliffside Public School is a historic school complex located at Cliffside, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Louis H. Asbury (1877-1975) and built in 1920–1921. It is a two-story on basement, "T"-plan, Classical Revival style terra cotta tile building sheathed in glazed brick. The front facade features a tetrastyle two-story portico of Indiana limestone. The vocational and physical education building, erected by the Work Projects Administration in 1940–1941. Also on the property are the contributing series of fieldstone masonry structures built in 1940–1941.It sits on landscaped grounds designed by Earle Sumner Draper.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Cool Springs High School is a historic high school building located at Forest City, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Louis H. Asbury (1877-1975) and built in 1924. It is a two-story on basement, "T"-plan, Classical Revival style red brick building. The front facade features a shallow four-column Tuscan order portico with echoing pilasters. In May 1998 it ceased to be used for instructional purposes.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is located in the West Main Street Historic District. Note: There was also a historic Cool Spring High School in Cool Springs Township, Iredell County, North Carolina.

McNair Field is a 2,000 seat baseball stadium located in Forest City, North Carolina. It was built in 2008 as the home of the Forest City Owls baseball team. It is also used for select games of the Gardner–Webb University Runnin' Bulldogs (Big South), Appalachian State Mountaineers (Sun Belt), Western Carolina University Catamounts, and Wofford College Terriers (SoCon) college baseball games.Amenities at McNair Field include a beer garden down the right-field line, a popular feature in the summer-collegiate Coastal Plain League, as well as concession stands down the foul lines, a scoreboard complete with one of the CPL's only videoboards, which measures 8'10" by 15', minor league-style dugouts and bullpens, and a state-of-the-art lighting system. It is named for Robert McNair, a Forest City native and founder of the Houston Texans football team.

Located in the district is the separately listed Cool Springs High School designed by Louis H. Asbury (1877-1975). Carson-Andrews Mill and Ben F.W. Andrews House, also known as Andrews Mill, is a historic home and grist mill located near Washburn, Rutherford County, North Carolina. The Carson-Andrews Mill was built between about 1830 and 1835, and is a two-story-with-attic heavy timber frame grist mill. Operation of the mill ceased in the early 1930s. The Ben F. W. Andrews House was built between about 1904 and 1908, and is a two-story, Colonial Revival style frame dwelling with a one-story rear ell. It features a pedimented, two-tier center-bay porch with one-story wraparound sections. Other contributing resources are the landscaped grounds, water wheel and stone mount (1897), flower house (c. 1908–1910), and privy.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Forest City Baptist Church, also known as First Baptist Church, is a historic Baptist church building located at 301 W. Main Street in Forest City, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect James M. McMichael and built in 1915. It is a two-story, cruciform plan, Classical Revival style brick building. It consists of an octagonal core surmounted by an eight-sided, slate-covered, pyramidal roof from which rectangular pedimented-gable wings project on the four sides. Adjoining the church is the Alexander Memorial building, built in 1927.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
