Forest City, formerly known as "Burnt Chimney," is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,377 as of the 2020 census, making it the most populous municipality in Rutherford County.

It encompasses 61 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 1 contributing structure in the central business district of Forest City. The district developed from the late 1880s through the 1920s, and includes notable examples of Classical Revival style architecture. Notable contributing buildings include the U.S. Post Office (1937), the Davis Sisters Building (after 1932), the Farmers Bank and Trust building (1923), National Bank of Forest City (1923), the Tuberculosis Center (1902), the Romina Theater (1928), the Town Hall (1928) designed by James J. Baldwin, the Blanton Hotel (1925), the Reinhardt Drug Company Building (by 1908), the First Wesleyan Church (1922), and the Florence Mill (1897-1941).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, with a boundary increase in 2004.

McNair Field is a 2,000 seat baseball stadium located in Forest City, North Carolina. It was built in 2008 as the home of the Forest City Owls baseball team. It is also used for select games of the Gardner–Webb University Runnin' Bulldogs (Big South), Appalachian State Mountaineers (Sun Belt), Western Carolina University Catamounts, and Wofford College Terriers (SoCon) college baseball games.Amenities at McNair Field include a beer garden down the right-field line, a popular feature in the summer-collegiate Coastal Plain League, as well as concession stands down the foul lines, a scoreboard complete with one of the CPL's only videoboards, which measures 8'10" by 15', minor league-style dugouts and bullpens, and a state-of-the-art lighting system. It is named for Robert McNair, a Forest City native and founder of the Houston Texans football team.

The district developed after 1867, and includes notable examples of Colonial Revival and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Located in the district is the separately listed Cool Springs High School designed by Louis H. Asbury (1877-1975). Other notable contributing resources include the Cool Springs Cemetery (est. 1867), First Presbyterian Church (1940), the Cool Springs Gymnasium (1958), Lovelace-Ragin House (1928), Harrill-Wilkins House (1925), Frank B. and Mae Bridges Wilkins House (c. 1910), McDaniel House (1913), Biggerstaff-Griffin House (1925), and McMurry-Bodie House (1928).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Cliffside Public School is a historic school complex located at Cliffside, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Louis H. Asbury (1877-1975) and built in 1920–1921. It is a two-story on basement, "T"-plan, Classical Revival style terra cotta tile building sheathed in glazed brick. The front facade features a tetrastyle two-story portico of Indiana limestone. The vocational and physical education building, erected by the Work Projects Administration in 1940–1941. Also on the property are the contributing series of fieldstone masonry structures built in 1940–1941.It sits on landscaped grounds designed by Earle Sumner Draper.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

Cool Springs High School is a historic high school building located at Forest City, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Louis H. Asbury (1877-1975) and built in 1924. It is a two-story on basement, "T"-plan, Classical Revival style red brick building. The front facade features a shallow four-column Tuscan order portico with echoing pilasters. In May 1998 it ceased to be used for instructional purposes.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is located in the West Main Street Historic District. Note: There was also a historic Cool Spring High School in Cool Springs Township, Iredell County, North Carolina.

T. Max Watson House is a historic home located at Forest City, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It built in 1939, and is a two-story, five-bay, central passage plan, Georgian Revival style white brick dwelling. It has a side-gable roof covered with interlocking red clay tiles. The front facade features a central projecting bay, one-story portico supported by three Ionic order columns, and second floor Palladian window.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. It is located in the East Main Street Historic District.

Max Watson House. Other notable buildings include the Brown-Griffith House (1923), Dr. W. C. Bostic Jr. House (1926), John W. and Bertha M. Dalton House (1939), J. H. Thomas House (1922), and the Marley Sigmon House (1962).It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Isothermal Community College (ICC) is a public community college in Spindale, North Carolina. Named after its location in the thermal belt, an area in the foothills of Western North Carolina with significantly milder temperatures than its immediate neighboring areas, it is part of the North Carolina Community College System. Isothermal is also the home to the public broadcast station WNCW. The Foundation of the Performing Arts Center at ICC is a community center that hosts plays, concerts, and other events by featured artists and groups. ICC offers several programs, such as Huskins courses in which high school students from the three local high schools can take and attend college courses, and the Rutherford Early College High (REaCH), an alternative high school that combines a college education with high school courses. The school's athletic program is known as the Patriots. The president, since February 1, 2021, is Margaret Annunziata. Preceding her was Walter H. Dalton, former lieutenant governor of North Carolina.

James Dexter Ledbetter House is a historic home located near Forest City, Rutherford County, North Carolina. It built in 1914, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, three-bay, double pile frame dwelling with Classical Revival and Colonial Revival style design elements. It sits on a low brick foundation and has a hipped roof. The front facade features a two-story engaged portico supported by Tuscan order columns, with a one-story wraparound section also supported by Tuscan columns.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Bostic is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 386 at the 2010 census.
